It's good that he is getting a few months to establish himself at 11:30 before Leno's 10:00 gets going. That should help.

I just hope that he doesn't soften his act, or play it more seriously. I think he can do much the same show at 11:30 that he was at 12:30, and doesn't have to play it "safe".

Just a fantastic article in the New York Times about Conan's move and new show. Some highlights:

On changing to fit a broader audience: “I’m not thinking about how I’m going to change myself to fit a certain demographic. I just have to block that nonsense out. In entertainment, you have to stake out what you think is right, you have to put out that signal, make sure it’s pure and then do it and do it and do it and know that they will come. And if they don’t, you have to pack up your bags and say: ‘I enjoyed my time here. Sorry it didn’t work out.’ But the biggest mistake would be to alter my signal to make sure that I reach all these different people. Because then you’re lost.”conan-pool

On the early, troubled days of “Late Night”: “One executive,” O’Brien recalled, “particularly despised Andy [Richter]. He told me I’d never succeed until I ‘got rid of that big fat dildo.’”

On meeting network affiliates across the country: “I moved to Los Angeles on March 9, and I’ve only slept here two nights in three weeks.” [...] “If you want to host ‘The Tonight Show,’ you need to go to Kansas City and Cleveland and Milwaukee and San Jose and Oklahoma City. There’s something about the show that does belong to those people.”

On missing performing: “The other day, I was at my daughter’s school to read to the kids, and I started acting out all the characters. I ran into [wife] Liza on my way out, and she said, ‘How did it go?’ I said, ‘I killed in there!’ She looked at me and said: ‘They’re a bunch of 4-year-olds. You’re just supposed to read the book.’ ”

I don't get why Leno is having a show at 10pm. What is it about? Is it to purposely try to upstage Conan?

Conan was gonna bolt to ABC or FOX, NBC didn't want to lose him, so he signed a contract saying that he would get the Tonight Show in four years.

Four years later Leno is still going strong. NBC feared Jay would go to ABC or FOX. Leno was going on Kimmels show as a guest just to say fuck you to NBC. ABC was going to get rid of nightline, put Kimmel at 12:30 and have Jay at 11:30. So they decided to put him on at 10.

So this way NBC doesn't lose anything except for 10pm drams and if Leno bombs at 10pm his image is tainted and if he goes to another network after that he might not be as strong.

A few thoughts:

* LOVED the opening segment with Conan running across the country.
* Strange not hearing Joel's voice opening the show.
* Max Weinberg & "The Tonight Show Band"?
* Will Ferrell kept his clothes on... I guess the first casualty of the 11:30 shift.
* Set looks terrific, except for that ugly stained glass behind the monologue. Looks like a 70's themed church.

Overall, happy to see the first show go smoothly. Always been a huge admirer of Conan. Sucks that he's not in NY anymore, but I think the LA show will be solid.

Also, thanks to Conan's lead-in, I'm tuning into Jimmy Fallon for the first time right now (probably not alone on that one)... and my God, is this show miserable. I tapped out after 15 minutes. Fallon is Late Night AIDS.

The Ford Taurus bit was unwatchable.

The Hollywood Sign "D" bit was harmless.

Andy Richter had nothing to do but it's only the first night. Keeping him behind that podium doesn't make much sense.

Max Weinberg wasn't on much, but again it's only the first night. I wounder if he would rather be on the current Springsteen tour.

Overall, at this point, I prefer Jimmy Kimmel. Too bad he doesn't come on until midnight but I guess that's not going to change since Nightline has been beating Letterman lately.

That's what Dave's house will look like in a couple of years.

I really love the fact this is basically late night with Conan renamed the Tonight show and an hour earlier.

After a week, nothings changed like all the rumors alleging that would happen.

I'm shocked at how similar it is. It isn't perfect but little things like Andy can be changed so easy. Same tempo and humor

^^

Love how Conan somehow got Seacrest to agree to play the clip of him trying to high five a blind kid. Not bad so far

Ok, Chickenfoot sucks a lot. Oof... This entire song is out of tune.. No really. Nothing is in tune.

Chad Smith wearing the shirt that said "I am not Will Ferrell" was hysterical.

I noticed that shirt too, and then I realized Chad Smith does look like Will Ferrell.

Ugh, only Tuesday and Thursday look remotely appealing to me. Major dropoff from the debut week, IMO.

So, now that it's done, which day of his debut week was the best for you? For me, it was clearly Tuesday with Tom Hanks and Green Day.

Personally, I would prefer more of the 1 main guest and 1 musical act deal. That leaves more time for his skits which to me are the best part of the show. I hate to say it, but his monologue has pretty much sucked.

Decisions, decisions:

Conan has Bill Burr.

Stern will be on Letterman. I heard him say this morning how he plans to badmouth Leno. It will be interesting to see how much, if anything Letterman lets him say.

And Colbert is doing his show from Iraq.
