View Full Version : 'Team Coco' Conan O'Brien Thread
Decisions, decisions:
Conan has Bill Burr.
Stern will be on Letterman. I heard him say this morning how he plans to badmouth Leno. It will be interesting to see how much, if anything Letterman lets him say.
And Colbert is doing his show from Iraq.
Conan and Colbert are on Hulu so you can watch them tomorrow. And if you don't like watching TV on computers Colbert is replayed a bunch of times.

I thought the audience sucked. Fuck I know Duchovny wasn't killing, but how about a laugh or two. He had some nice jabs at CoCo and they didn't react at all.
Burr ended strong.

Yeah, this audience did seem dead tonight. Granted Duchovny wasn't as funny as say Tom Hanks did last week, but he did have some witty things to say. I started to think that maybe they couldn't hear him because he talks so low.
I've got to wonder how Conan truly feels about some of the things his guests have said so far considering he is trying to win over an older audience now. From Joel McHale saying his kid "got some" in the bathtub with an older woman, to Patton Oswalt saying the applause is for his balls, to Duchovny saying "having wang in his mouth isn't so bad" you could see a bit of uneasiness on Conan's part.
Personally I found all of those funny, but with him needing to try and secure a broader audience (i.e. older people), I wonder how he truly felt about it.

Last night's audience was crap, given Duchovany is somewhat mental but they couldn't even cut Burr a break for the first half of his set. I figured they just werent used to "that" kind of humor.

Jimmy Fallon either has really good writers or is secretly funny despite his awkwardness. This cell phone pic bit is pretty good. This is the sort of thing I imagine on Jay Leno's new show.

That was CoCo's best monologue on the new show. Trashed a lot of corporations and I'm warming up to Andy's spot. He threw in a bunch of good lines during it.

I thought the exact same thing. I think he's a funny guy, seems pretty bright and makes some obscure references. And I like the structure of his show and the bits he has are pretty odd and original. He is not a good host, however so that kind of kills whatever good things he may have going for him.

Did anyone see Norm McDonald on Conan? It was hilarious. As Norm was doing a 10 minute, over embelished childrens joke you could see Conan squirming. Conan seemed all worried about staying on his time schedule and Norm was just going on and on. I can honestly say I have never laughed so much at Norm. I was honestly wondering as I was watching if conan really hates him because Conan just looked so uncomfortable. Norm also saw fit to drop the F bomb numerous times. I bet NBC loved that.

I know I sound like a broken record but,
fuck this.
Fire everybody.
NOBODY IS WATCHING EITHER SHOW. Leno's numbers suck. Conan's numbers suck. Everybody had a great ride. It's time to cut bait.
It wasn't broke, they tried to fix it, now it's broke. Bam.
Does NBC reeeally believe that putting Jay back at 11:35 won't have any fallout? The numbers will be high at first... and then they will dwindle. This over-exposure has killed late night. It's that simple.
NBC needs to court new hosts, and give the shows to them. Maybe it's no-names (like Conan used to be). Maybe it's household names like Tina Fey or whatever (simply an example). But it is time to kick this Leno/Conan thing to the curb.
The old format has been demolished. It's time to rebuild.

I love Carolla more than anything. I am a loyal follower of his and I think his podcast is the best thing going. (today!)
But... I don't think he's right for the late night gigs. When he tries to clean up his act for his appearances on Leno's show... it dies on the vine. His podcast is where he needs to be.
I would, however, like to see Sarah Silverman up there. Or Amy Sedaris. Or Amy Poehler. I think a women would be a great way to shake things up. Maybe even Mikela Watkins.
Maybe get a movie star with some good timing, like Luke Wilson. Or perhaps and all-out comedian like Bryan Regan. There are soooo many options. I don't know why NBC is putting all their chips on Conan & Jay (at this point).

Yeah, Conan definitely came off as a class act tonight. And the Freebird performance at the end was so bad (the Will F part) it was awesome.
Also, to give credit where it was due...Jimmy Fallon's opening bit, going into the old Conan studio (now Dr. Oz - I think that's what he said) & singing "So Hard to Say Goodbye" with the Roots as his backing vocals & pouring out some OE800 for Conan...funny stuff.

Conan proved himself to be a class act tonight. The only time he visibly choked up was when he thanked the fans. Shows the kind of guy he is.
I got all sad at that part.
Great show and I can't wait till he comes back with a vengeance.

I watched the other clips of Howard talking about how he was asked to go on Conan, and how that would have been a huge deal. How again would that have been huge? The $500 million morning zoo host really is a fool.
Yeah, Conan really launched himself in all this, and he'll probably end up with a better job.
Meanwhile, Leno really diminished himself, and just looks like a douche now.
People are fickle, though.
The first time Leno gets a high-profile guest, like when he got Kanye after the whole MTV Awards thing with Taylor Swift, people will tune in and watch.
The only guy who came out of this looking stronger was Letterman.
There will be a lot of buzz when Conan comes back for his first week on wherever he goes, but after that, he's still going to have to do a show, and he wasn't beating Letterman beforehand...if he goes head-to-head with Letterman and Leno, I don't see how he doesn't run third every night on a nightly basis for quite a while.

Yeah but a 3rd network will be more likely to let him build an audience. Plus face it, Leno/Letterman audiences are only getting older and closer to death.

I don't know, there's some issues no matter where he goes.
Most people think he'll end up at FOX...the problem there, is that FOX has no 10PM programming...they do their local news on the affiliates at 10, and then go to syndication at 11, which means one of the following things:
1) Conan does a show from 11-12, which could cause some issues, because his interview segments would run right up against the opening monologue/comedy bits of the other shows, once it hits 11:30, plus he'd be competing against local news in every market for the first half of his show.
2) Conan does the standard 11:35-12:35 show, which would mean his lead-in would either be a syndicated half hour sitcom at 11 (likely Seinfeld or Simpsons), or local news would be pushed back, at which point FOX then either needs to come up with programming for the 10PM hour, or just run syndication there, conceding the timeslot.
3) Conan does the exact same thing Leno did, which is a 10PM show for FOX, followed by local news....this actually is a better situation for Conan, than it would be for Leno, because he would have American Idol as a lead-in on several nights, and they could tie-in contestants as guests on Conan's show immediately afterwards.

I only dabble in the late night shows, but I've always liked Conan.
After having checked out Jay a few times last week, and seeing Conan's show a few times lately, including last night's phenomenal broadcast, I just can't understand the commitment to Jay Leno.
Watching his show was like browsing bad internet sites with "wacky headlines" and news anchor bloopers.
It was like getting 30 bad chain emails from your mom with stupid jokes or goofy pics of peoples butt cracks showing.
I'm astonished he ever got the ratings he did, and even more astonished that NBC could conceive of fucking Conan like this.
Looking forward to Conan's next gig.

Well, Conan will not get 10 PM on Fox, because too many affiliates have their local news on in that hour. And because they get to go on earlier than the other stations, those newscasts are usually pretty lucrative for them.
Why does Conan need to be back in late night, anyway? Why not a prime time, sketch/variety show? We're thinking of this like there's only one thing that he can do, but there's not.

I saw his show last night at Radio City Music Hall. Fantastic show. The guy really is a showman: playing tunes, sketches and just random bits with Andy. Reggie Watts opened up - and did I hear him on the show recently? - anyway, I loved his act. Very smart and funny. Conan played guitar (not bad), guests included Paul Rudd, John Krasinski, Bill Hader, Triumph, The Masturbating Bear (now Panda), and Vampire Weekend (my least favorite part of the show). The Texas Walker Ranger Lever KILLED, and I had forgotten how funny that bit was.
Stephen Colbert also showed up for a "dance off", which was just ridiculous.

I watched up until Seth Rogen came out and Conan says to him, "so, you just got engaged..." then had to turn it off.
It was a strong start, with a great opening, but I don't like the short pre-interview sounding interviews.
I doubt I'll ever tune in again. It was hard enough just finding TBS.
I'd appreciate late night shows more if they had one guest and got to spend more time interviewing and interacting. That would make shows more interesting, rather than just getting someone for 6-10 minutes who's only there to promote an upcoming movie, then shuffling them out to get to another guest there to promote something.
The Don Draper cameo was a nice touch.

I'll be honest, I forgot he was on and didn't tune in until about 11:08 so I missed that opening which is pretty funny. The rest of the show was meh. He's at his best with the prepared bits, monologue and riffing with Andy. Throw in a musical guest or comedian and a masturbating bear or pimpbot appearance and you got yourself a show. If he wanted to do something different, like Ron wants him to do, he should do away with the interviews completely, or at least limit them to when he has a killer guest - which might be hard to get on TBS once the new show novelty wears off.
That Seth Rogan interview bordered on the douchechilly and I think I dozed off during the girl from Glee. To be honest I had no idea who she was and cared even less. What would have been funnier is if he would have interviewed the lady from the Nutcracker Museum.

The weird thing is, some of these cable networks will actually edit shows when they are aired as repeats during the daytime. I've seen shows like CSI (that were originally aired on Network TV), and when they air on cable networks, they will "silence" words that aren't even considered cuss words by most people. I can't think of any specific examples, but I have seen it happen.
