Looks like the Spider-man Musical (http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.7014.First_Look%7Ecolon%7E_Spider-Man_2010_Broadway_Musical)is going to happen.

http://marvel.com/i/content/st/7014/7014story_banner5496365.jpg

Directed by Julie Taymor with music by Bono and Edge.

I do not know what to think.

I'll probably see this if they offer student rush, but they probably won't knowing the budget if this fucking thing.

My initial thought was:

Okay, it was my second, third and fourth thoughts. But it is Julie Taymor, and no one thought the Lion King would work.

Well, the Lion King movie (and all of the Disney movies that have been adapted for Broadway) has at least the skeleton of a musical. Adding music to Spiderman just seems silly.

Edit: Jack Cassidy as Superman? So bizarre.

Actually, it appears that Jack Cassidy played the villain (http://www.redboots.net/smusical/musical.htm), but got top billing.

Turn off the dark?

What does that even mean?

Wouldn't that be... turning on a light?

The fact that this is happening and that the Obama Spiderman team up is on of the hottest issues in recent memory proves Spiderman is done. The book has become stale and boring. The only way people talk about this comic is through gimmicky bullshit.

I am ALL for this idea. Why not? This sort of show can expose more kids to the story and bring a decent production together for parents who are secretly still lil 9-yr-old boys and girls running around in their Underroos.

What's a better story? Phantom? CATS!?

The nly problem I have is that serious drama has gone the way of the Donner Party--Arthur Miller never would have been big if the whole lights nd sound extravaganzas were the rage in the 40s and 50s.

I don't see this as being any different than Young Frankenstein or Lion King or any of that. I've seen some pretty awful things on broadway (Spring Awakening and 39 Steps being a couple, and the critics loved them), but I'm sure this won't be awful. I'm also hoping that it takes a sort of campy direction but with "Turn Off The Dark" as a subtitle, it doesn't look that way.

It's an interesting mix of people for the created-by lines. But Julie Taymour's last non-Disney backed outing didn't go over so well ... on the flip side, not all Disney On B'Way shows are worth the transfer. (See Tarzan and The Little Mermaid for examples.)

Although, the Hilton Theatre is an ideal venue for a comic book crowd - the seats are bigger, there's more legroom and they let you bring snacks back into the seats during intermission.

It really looks interesting, but has the distinct possibility to BOMB big-time.

Well, after three years and $60 million dollars, it starts previews this week.

I'm predicting this will be a major flop.

Apparently the preview was something of a disaster.

Last night's opening pre view of Broadway's most expensive production ever, "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," was an epic flop as the $65 million show's high-tech gadgetry went completely awry amid a dull score and baffling script, theatergoers griped.
Stunned audience members were left scratching their heads over the confusing plot -- when they weren't ducking for cover from falling equipment and dangling actors at the Foxwoods Theatre on West 42nd Street, some said.
At various points, overhead stage wires dropped on the audience, scenery appeared on stage missing pieces -- and the show's star was even left swaying helplessly over them midair during what was supposed to be the climatic end to the first act.

I've asked this a few times, so I'll ask again:

Apparently the woman who is directing this show has a background in puppetry? That said, why the hell did NO ONE think of talking to engineers or people from Cirque du Soleil for the wire work?

Denis Leary was on Imus a few days ago and did a great rant on Spider-Man and about how he'd pay extra money to see people fall. "I don't want to see people get hurt; just fall. I'd pay like 500 extra to see that. And if they fall on top of someone in the audience close to me? That's 1000 extra."

Where exactly does 65 million go on a broadway show?

I mean, I know U2 doesn't come cheap.

This show is a lost cause.
I think they should have a fire sale and just charge, like, $25 per ticket. Get people in the door. If it gets bad word-of-mouth.... oh well.... the show's reputation is already in the toilet. If people actually LIKE it... then maybe the show will manage to recoup a handsome chunk o' change over the next few weeks/months.

Feb. 16 2011, New York, NY: ____ Veteran humorist and playwright, Justin Moran, launches “Spiderman Smackdown”, a guerilla theatre project to write, rehearse, and perform a fully realized musical based on the character Spiderman in under 30 days with a budget of $0. Set to open one day before the $65 Million Broadway musical “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark”, Moran’s musical will be the first Spiderman Musical to officially open in New York City.

The Spidey Project that was conceived, written and performed in under a month for $0 is now available on Youtube. It premiered on March 15 - the same night the $65 million version was supposed to premier. I bet you its actually better than the Turn Off the Dark version.

It's in four parts. Here's Part 1. If you're really interested I'm sure you can figure out how to find the other ones.
