It's the new Apatow film, with the Apatow people doing the Apatow thing.
Trailer here. (http://www.moviefone.com/movie/funny-people/33221/main)
I'm looking forward to it. I've not been caught up yet in the whole backlash of all things Apatow-esque.

Does anyone's weight fluctuate more than Seth Rogen? Geesh.
Looks funny, except for the dying part. I'll check it out for sure, I still dig his flicks and the recurring actors he uses.

Another 3 hour movie but this time he's really loading up on sap. Oh good, Sandler sings!
The only movie I thought had any merit from the Apatow clan was Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and he wasn't involved.

He's getting buff for the Green Hornet Flick.
I'll see it. At least I know his movies won't be terrible...increases the odds of getting your money's worth.

I just enjoy his films and the ones done is his style. Laid back, profane comedies I don't have to invest much into that actually manage to have an emotional core. Works for me. Not the end-all-be-all of comedies, but I enjoy them.
And the line at the end about passing through fire cracked me up.

Saw the trailer again before 'I Love You, Man'. I think the movie will be good but I don't care for the trailer (if that makes any sense). I don't think they could show as much funny as they wanted to. Hope it doesn't get too sappy but Sandler has to have a funny movie left somewhere, right?

I have to say this looks really funny. I'm getting a little fatigued of seeing Seth Rogen in every comedy movie, but this does look really quality and it's hard to mess with Apatow.

This also:
Jeffrey Wells from Hollywood Elsewhere received feedback from sources who had seen a test screening, with one source calling it "really funny, a really sweet movie, a lot of veracity...really a brilliant film", comparing it to the works of James L. Brooks. Another source who gave feedback mentioned the possibility of Academy Award nominations for the film, notably Best Original Screenplay for Apatow and Best Actor for Sandler.

an oscar for sandler would be sweet just because its so odd
I don't think any actor from Saturday Night Live has won an acting oscar. Someone from "In Living Color" did though (Jamie Foxx..i always thought Jim Carrey wouldve gotten it first)
i always hoped Bill Murray would be the first SNL guy to get an oscar

If Adam Sandler wins an Oscar for acting, then let Hollywood burn to the ground. I can't imagine a stupider thought.

It just seems really unlikely. I think the script could get something but he just has no acting chops. Punch Drunk was the best he could do.

Yes, I'm supposed to anticipate a man with absolutely zero history of great performances...hell decent acting performances, is just gonna show up and start doing great work?

No kidding. Any Oscar talk for this flick is for the script, though even that is suspect since so much of it is likely on-set improvs. Even when Sandler does well in a "serious" flick (which he's really only done once) it's because the film has been tailored with him in mind. You look at the movies where he's tried to act and the role wasn't written for him and it's a fucking mess (Spanglish, Reign Over Me).

And even then he was just being Adam Sandler. It was the movie itself that was skewed around him to make Sandler's typical onscreen persona seem horrible and awkward.

Because most of the movie is about what he does AFTER he finds out he's not going to die. Him not dying isn't this huge climax/twist near the end. It's the basic overarching plot device of most of the film.

From the mouth of Judd Apatow:
“Randy isn’t in 'Funny People' anywhere near as much we wish he was. Something hilariously magical happened when Aziz showed up. So we all said, ‘What else can we do?’ Let’s just make a documentary! We just couldn’t stop writing for him. And now we’re talking about making the RANDY movie. We can’t get enough of Randy…”
Though he was laughing, he definitely wasn’t joking about a RANDY movie later adding, “we’re outlining it right now.”

Funny People should be a TV dramedy. As a feature, it's too long, there aren't enough laughs for a comedy and it's not dramatic enough as a drama. But since there's no chance you could ever get Sandler doing TV work, and he's the only actor capable of playing the character believably, we're stuck with a 2:30 dramedy that is just Ok.
[spoilers]
The first hour of the film is a great pilot, but then it was like Judd didn't know when to stop writing or which story to tell. The first hour Sandler is sick, then boom, he's cured. Pilot episode over. But no, it goes on. Then we have a completely separate storyline of him wanting to get back with his ex practically out of nowhere and that takes another hour. Then it all unwinds into some bizarre conclusion of Sandler's character realizing what a douche he's been without any prompt, it just happens 2 minutes before the film is over without any substantiation.
The film just jumps around from idea to idea. Sandler's character has a shitty relationship with his family, so he reunites with them midway through the film ... and then we never see them again. Why was that even necessary? Sandler spends 20-30 minutes bonding with his ex's kids before suddenly becoming a douche while watching the kid singing in a show, and his reply was "It's better on Broadway." Wtf? He's in love with the chick, he's depressed without her, but then she starts talking about commitment (admittedly, in an out-of-character asshole way) and he gets freaked out.
This can still be a pretty good HBO/Showtime show. Kind of like an Entourage with geeky comics trying to make it big in LA or NY. But Apatow really dropped the ball on this one. The script needed a lot more polish, but for whatever reason, they went into production and hoped that star power would fix it along the way, it didn't quite work. It wasn't a waste of time, but it wasn't great either, and it could've been much better.

The movie really overstayed its welcome for me with a drawn-out third act where Judd Apatow's wife and kids got shoehorned in and the story started occurring in real time. Not even the great Eric Bana reverting back to his comedic roots was enough to salvage this span.
I listened to O&A today and I felt like they went way over the top in ingratiating themselves to JA. They more or less repeatedly said that he was the most important filmmaker since the advent of the medium just because he was the first high-profile Hollywood guest in a coon's age to stay for two breaks on their show.

Yeah I like Judd's stuff, but I was getting cloverfield flashbacks listening to them talk up the movie so much.

“Randy isn’t in 'Funny People' anywhere near as much we wish he was."
Yeah, because all that cinematic gold involving the indulgent showcasing of your wife and children was uncuttable.
Leslie Mann's screen time proportionality has increased alongside the clout Apatow accrued with each subsequent effort. She went from extended cameo in "Virgin" to a recurring supporting character in "Knocked Up" to third lead who tacks on 40 needless minutes and brings to a grinding halt the story momentum of "Funny People." At this rate she's going to be the headliner in his next directorial effort that cumbersomely blends raunch and tenderness.

Yeah, I saw it last night, and I pretty much agree with all of this. It definitely has its moments, but over all, it's a big mess. That was one tedious final hour too.

You'd think Apatow was taking casting advice from David Mamet or something.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else here. I loved most of the movie, but the final 45 minutes or so just stop everything dead.

i really really liked it. Obviously the first half was way better than the second, but their were aspects of the second half that i really liked, and a lot of it caught me by surprise
i can't wait for the dvd, i think it will have a lot of great stuff
one thing that i have been thinking about...judd wrote the role for adam sandler and i think he did a great job. But i almost feel like a missed opportunity because the person that would've really killed that role would've been Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy seems more isolated/famous/rich than sandler and to see him in a real role where he does stand up again wouldve been amazing (because as far as i know, sandler was never considered a legendary stand-up).
either way, out of the apatow directed films, i do believe this is his best one and i'm interested to see what he does next

I think " 'Funny People' play 'Funny Games' " would be a movie I would stand on line to see.
"Funny Games" underwhelmed me and made me afraid at the same time. That movie has a weird vibe.

The last hour was fucking TORTURE. Way too long. Like watching 2 different movies. WTF. Would have been way better if it was an hour shorter.

but it was never about a legendary comedian. it was about a popular comedian.

Apparently there was a 3 hour 45 minute version, and Apatow had to cut it down to 2:30.

Hey, the best part about that promise is he said he won't make anymore movies. It's win-win!
And fuck, Pryor was still hysterical as a standup after he got rich and famous. Yeah, he didn't have Murphy-money, but a standup as killer as Murphy was will still have something. He's one of the greatest.

another thing with Murphy is, I think he has the talent to be a great actor. He just does shitty movies (which is another reason why is career is so frustrating to me). It may sound silly, but if you watch him as the fat nutty professor...he really did create a well acted character that is nothing like himself. Sandler can't do that...he either plays himself or himself with a funny voice. I think Eddie Murphy has potential to do such great things and 10-15yrs of some of the shittiest movies ever...this couldve been a great vehicle for him.
i still really liked the movie, and i think i liked it more than most because i did like the second half alot (just not as much as the first). The length of the film didn't bother me because i'm weird where if i go to a movie theater, i want it to be over 2 hours. Its hard for me to pay attention to long movies when i watch them at home so i want to see them in the theater, but i can pay attention to an 80-90min movie at home

This was a great movie that lost it's way. What a shame.
The first half had such a unique tone. So funny... so intimate. It almost felt like a Cameron Crowe movie at times.
But... that last half was a disjointed mess that didn't connect with me.
QUESTION (spoiler)
Did anybody else feel -for just a moment- that Seth Rogen was gonna end up with Leslie Mann?
I think that was intentionally misleading.
Their characters were connecting.... he was connecting with her kids.... he's funny.... she wanted somebody "real".... he was bothered that Sandler was kinda "using" her.... and then he sneaks off the airport.
Took me right out of the movie.
Also...
I would've been a lot happier if Sandler's characted died at the end.
He got sick.... THOUGHT he was cured... learned how to live a little... and then died. But.. his comedy/legacy lives on.
Would've been a lot better than the shlocky, tacked on, predictable ending that we ended up with.
2 stars.

It may be my favorite Apatow movie. It's not really a comedy, but it's very funny.

I just rented it this weekend.
I liked it, it's a good movie. However, it is NOT a comedy, regardless of the "HILARIOUS!" and "LAUGH-OUT-LOUD" on the DVD cover. Sandler is good in this, in fact everyone is good in it.
Clearly, the problem with the ex-girlfriend's sub-plot is there as everyone says. If someone would just edit it: leave in the part where Sandler and Rogan go to Mann's house, spend some time with the kids, Mann's husband comes back unexpectedly from his trip, cut to the line where she tells Sandler she can't leave her family, then go back to the movie as it is. That would eliminate 30-40 minutes of unnecessary bloat.
I would recommend it. The commentary track, with Apetow, Sandler and Rogan, is pretty good too. Apetow and Rogan do most of the talking.
