Whenever I hear Werner Herzog speak, I reflexively fill in "And now is zee time on Sprockets vhen ve dahnce."
He's just this stereotype of the dark, brooding German artiste talking about death and decay and misery all the time. In the documentary "Burden of Dreams", he has this monologue where he talks about how he hears "murder and fornication" in the jungle, and he's being deadly serious, but it just makes me bust out laughing.

No one could make that story for 30 years. The scripts were never right and then one finally came along. The film reel stuff and the sure handedness of the story on top of the best top to bottom cast of acting that I've ever seen, Van Sant did a better job. Boyle didn't have to get anything out of his actors. And the film had some cliches that he could have steered away from.

To me, the best director has to have also created something visually that's amazing. SM, in my opinion, trounces all over Milk in that regard. Which is credit to the director completely. Showcasing the acting is the directors job. The film didn't have a single bad note in that regard.
The story was there forever and once the right screenplay came along (which I also said deserves all the credit and deserved to win) he made the film pretty flawlessly.
Boyle's story was there for him. And he just copied the look of City of God. Visually, SM was stronger. That's cinematography. Which it won I believe. Directing is so much more than that. Van Sant did more directing than Boyle. Trainspotting was better directed.

I think you're way understating the role of the director in the visual sense and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overstating their role when it comes to the actors. I mean, you say all Boyle did was copy City of God (which I don't agree with at all as I found SM much more dynamic visually), but you could say that all Gus did was point the camera at Sean Penn and the other actors ad let them go to town on a brilliant script.
I man, his principle actors were Josh Brolin and Sean Penn. He could have edited the film with his eyes closed and gotten great performances out of them with the script they had.
Hell, even just out of his own films Gus' directing has been far more impressive.

I'm not. Casting and the performances have as much to do with the director as it does the actor. The visuals on some films are solely that of the cinematographer. What was unique about Milk? It was a very well done historical biopic with good performances and a very good script. Conrast that with another film with great performances by a bunch of unknowns, a fantasic original story, beautiful visuals and amazing music and I gotta go with the other film. Hell, on top of that, I'll give Boyle more credit for going so far out of his element culturally to get the film made.

I would say great performances for a story that no one could make properly for decades. Using the device of him making a tape in the beginning to roll out the story, the newsfootage, the balance between humor and heartbreak. He walked such a fine line and pulled it off flawlessly.
SM did not have great performances by any means, we couldn't have seen the same film. Original story (that I've seen before, go rent City of God for starters). Again, what was so "difficult" creatively about Milk? 30 years of shitty scripts doesn't mean squat in terms of Gus' role as the director, especially since he didn't write the script that was ultimately successful. Outside politics? Eh, fine, but again, I think the difficulty of a Scottish filmmaker being able to nail Indian inner city culture and Bollywood pop culture through a "western" view as well as he did stacks up to any of that.
And I've seen CoG many, many times. I think you're understating both that and SM by insisting they're so similar. Yes, both revolve around idealistic kids from inner city slums wanting to escape that life. That's a pretty common story theme we've seen countless times; blame Dickens. Beyond that, both are incredibly different in terms of the characters, how the stories progress and the visual styles. CoG was far more influenced by Tarantino and Scorcese's filmmaking styles.

30 years of shitty scripts because the story was so hard to tell. Harvey was such a unique, didactic man that the film had to reflect that. And the political aspect of the film is so huge. Again, I give you the cultural point, he gets mad props for that.
I don't think SM is close to the film that City of God is but thats just me. Again, I thought Slumdog was great and Boyle was a fine choice for best director. I just think Van Sant did his best work on this film (which I can't say for Boyle) and gave a forum for an incredible character and incredible performances in a beautiful political film. He'd win my Oscar.

I guess I just don't agree on that. An interesting, admirable man, but I think the life of someone like, say, Malcolm X is far trickier to navigate yet he too was able to be put to film. I just don't think Milk was some Confederacy of Dunces of a man in terms of making a biopic about him and even if he was, I'd give the screenwriter much more credit in sorting him out than Gus. I thorughly enjoyed this years awards.
I'm not a fan of many of Penn's political motives, but I completely agree with what he said tonight. I also respect him as an actor, though I would have liked Richard Jenkins to get it. Guy has been in the business for awhile and almsot always goes unoticed.
Kate Winslet is wonderful and deserved that award.
Slumdog Millionaire doesn't have one great actor or one great actress. It truly is an ensemble production. The whole cast worked together so well. And, I know the girl who's father was the gameshow host. So, kick ass for knowing famous people.

True words, Papa Bear. Josh Brolin was up for best supporting actor, but Heath Ledger won
the Oscar.
Anyone of those up for best supporting actor could have won. It just so happened that this would be the only chance that Ledger had at winning an Academy award. They really had no choice but to give it to him. And that's not saying Ledger wasn't deserving, because he was wonderful in DK and he made the character his own.
But imagine the awkwardness if someone else had won?

Is it over yet?
Who won?
a homo-commie, a dead fag, a brit nazi, and some spaniard broad.

I liked last night's telecast. I see it getting bad reviews, but I thought Wolverine did a great job.
And Ben Stiller was hysterical. Can't say that often.

Dustin Lance Black deserves all the credit in the world and a win more than anyone from tonight's show. The way in which that film was conveyed and the performances and accuracies of that era and the look and the heart goes back to the director.
Thank god someone's willing to talk film around here, our resident film expert usually writes nonsense.
I thought message boards and radio shows were the place for nonsense.

This is probably well covered but I think the whole Ben Stiller bit was so chicken shit. Joaquin Phoenix is either
A: 'punking' everyone in which case Ben Stiller is a hack piggy backing on someone else's already bad joke.
B: All fucked up on drugs which might be somewhat tasteless to parody considering the Heath Ledger thing or
C: A genuinely weird guy who decided to be as weird as he wants to be, and even though Stiller made his name as an alternative sketch comedy guy he starting taking HGH and appealing to our moms so he really should rag on a dude taking an artistic risk for a cheap laugh.
