View Full Version : When good movies spawn horrific sequels: presenting, S. Darko
So let's set the scene for those who haven't followed this.
Richard Kelly writes and directs Donnie Darko in 2001, starring a little known young actor named Jake Gyllenhall in what is probably his first breakout role.
The movie bombs at the box office due to a number of circumstances, despite fantastic critical reception, but picks up a pretty strong following on DVD in subsequent years and becomes a cult classic.
So fast forward seven years...Nathan Atkins, a guy whose credits are all as editing assistants on movies and shows, pens the screenplay, for S. Darko, a movie about Donnie's little sister who is grown up. Why? Who knows...he was probably a fanboy of the original film.
Chris Fisher, a guy who directs Cold Case episodes, and has the cinematic 'classic' Nightstalker attached to him signs on to direct.
And Richard Kelly? Absolutely no involvement, no interest, and no desire to see this project made.
They did sign the girl who played Samantha Darko in the original, Daveigh Chase, to reprise the role.
So here we are, a couple months from release. FOX bought the distribution rights, but apparently it's so awful it's going straight to video. And as if to hammer home the point that this is a horrific attempt at making a sequel for a movie that shouldn't have a sequel, they've attached the subtitle S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale.
Anyway, the trailer is online now. Pretty awful:

Oh yeah, and Elizabeth Berkley is in this...

I can't begin to describe how annoyed I am that some needs to capitalize on a great movie by making a fucking awful sequel. Can't Hollywood stop this bullshit?

Great song, decent camerawork and an excellent way to quickly introduce most of the main characters...then it immediately goes to shit wih Lispy McHackysack trying to act.
Richard Kelly would make a very good music video director.

It is a real movie, it was suppose to be released in theaters, but is now going straight-to-DVD instead.

83% on Rotten Tomatoes would suggest you and Mojo are in the minority on this one.
I don't think it's a great movie, but I do think it's good, and at least worthy of not being wrecked by an unauthorized sequel.

I miss The Critic.
I miss The Critic.
x2.
The movie parodies were unbelievable. And their Gulf War episode is still one of the funniest episodes of any animated shows I've ever seen.
