Mystery Science Theater 3000 was such an amazing show. It was brilliant. I was watching an episode on DVD and I just couldn't stop laughing. I wish it were still on.

The movie wasn't nearly as good as the show. I was such a nerd for that show! I just went to a Cinematic Titanic performance here in San Francisco. It's all the original guys (Joel, Trace, Frank, etc) standing in front of a movie screen watching a horrible movie with a live audience. The tour's almost over, but they're putting out DVD's. You should check out the website: cinematictitanic.com

So odd, as I just watched the movie the other night. It really isn't nearly as good as the show itself, but still brought back some good memories. While Mike Nelson wasn't bad, he just couldn't hold up to Joel. That site Hbox put up sounded like Mike, so I checked it out and sure enough it's him. Not bad, I'll be sure to pop in here and there.
Jsmurf, I had no clue the original crew were still at it of sorts. I'll be sure to check that out as well, but how odd is it that none of these guys have moved on/found another angle bc they have a good comedic sense.

Go on youtube and type in mst3k and many shows will come up. The people who put them up usually link them together and you can watch whole shows in segments. Its nice, great show!

i never understood how we live in a world of constant repeats and channels filing their times with old shows that they rerun the same episode later in the day, and not one of my 100s of channels can show repeats of MST3K
and it would probably be the perfect show for the DVR era too...if you're not digging the movie you can just fastforward to the comedy bits inbetween the breaks
I miss it too. I remember many laughing my balls off many Saturday mornings while trying to recover from the night before.
I wonder if they're as funny as I remember if you're not half in the bag?

Hell no. That show is funny in any state of mind.
It's not on in repeats because the show's fame ended up being a double edged sword. A lot of the films they used either had their broadcast rights repurchased or the people that owned them already started charging more when they saw how popular the show was and how much they could make in the DVD market. It would be pretty damn expensive to broadcast MT3K in regular repeats these days, which is ironic given how cheap it was to make the show. If you think back to the final year or so of daily repeats on Comedy Central, you kept seeing the same 15 or so public domain episodes most of the time.
The company that now puts out the DVD's, Shout! Factory, is a great company for putting TV shows on DVD, and they should have much more success getting the more expensie and harder to get shows on DVD than Rhino did. The official MST3K site compiled a list back in 2006 of the remaining episodes and how likely it would be to get them released. (http://www.mst3kinfo.com/ward_e/listlikely.html)
As for Joel vs. Mike, I really like both for different reasons. Joel was better with the bad 50's monster and sci-fi movies, mostly because he seemed to have a really goofy love for things from that era and the charming stupidity of those films. Mike was better with the 60's and 70's stuff because he and the bots would just rip into them and really go to town on how wretched they were.

I liked Joel, and I give him credit for starting the show, but I enjoy Mike more. With Joel i had more of a stoner kind of feel. Mike didn't bring that.

the thing about Joel, he was great as an MST3K host. But if you ever saw his stand up act, he is the hackiest prop comic. Hes just terrible, his bit was to do props in a steven wright delivery. I lost a lot of respect for him when i saw his act

God...I was watching some of my fave movies from MST3K on Youtube last night. I was up till 330 AM watching it.
Danger Death Ray!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRPRL0gmWvQ) Love the 'Ole' at the end and the laughter of Crow.
Car chase from Danger Death Ray!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQzLCdzy7Wk&feature=related)
And the other funny one was from the short lived seventh season on Comedy Central
Escape 2000. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cau55Pinxjs&feature=PlayList&p=CAC59D1C8B578E4D&index=6)

I became obsessed with this show again the moment YouTube came out. It's kinda funny that you made this thread, cuz I just started DL'ing torrents of all the seasons off the net. Deathstalkers and the Warriors From Hell is still my favorite so far.
We need a be all, end all "Joel or Mike" poll.
I know the original is usually best, but I liked Mike better.

Asking if Joel is better than Mike is essentially an unanswerable question for me. They were both great but for different reasons.
Joel was amazingly creative, had great inventions for the exchange, and his timing and delivery were outstanding.
Mike was a better writer, had more clever and sarcastic jokes, and felt like more of a leader to me.

I liked them both, but I preferred Joel. The early shows seemed more "fun," like they were enjoying their jobs more. Besides, "Mitchell" is the best episode--Joel's last show. You don't mess with Joe Don.

The majority of my favorite episodes were Mike-hosted, because after Scifi channel picked up the show in season 7, they were forced to limit the movies they viewed to sci fi/monster flicks, which are right up my alley. Having said that, though, Joel is my favorite host.

Definately Joel. There was something off when Mike took over. There seemed to be less shitting on the movies with Mike. Even Servo and Crow didnt talk as much.

Wait...what?
I get why people are going to prefer one over the other, but this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say that Mike went easier on the films they watched than Joel. The most common thing I see people saying about Mike, either in his favor or against him, is that he was much more harsh on the films than Joel was. Joel came at them with a kind of goofy affection for how dumb they were...Mike just trashed them.

What I meant was that there was a lot less talk with Mike. Maybe he was harsher but there seemed to be more letting the movie play out and less comments. Maybe it waas just the Eps I saw. Im gonna have to watch the DVD I bought a couple years ago.

Cinematic titanic is great!
Here's that thread (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64437&highlight=brain)
I have the first one and if I ever get any disposable income the rest will be mine.
Plus, the best place to get full episodes is google video. They have them all in one file so you don't have to switch them.

I was a huge MST fan in the old days. I have not seen one in a while, but something hit me earlier this week and made me think of it. I was on ebay debating whether to drop $150 to buy 4 of the collections. I haven't yet, but damn I miss that show.
I was always more of a Joel fan, but I never turned off a Mike episode. Seeing the "Mitchell" reference in this thread brought a huge smile to my face just thinking about it.
I still have a lot of poor quality vhs recordings, but they're all in my storage unit. I think I still have a working vcr somewhere, so I think I'm going to pull all my old tapes out of storage tomorrow.
Please don't forget to vote!

They released a box set in December, I think, for the aniversary of the show. There's alot of great behind the scenes, and making of. There's clips from a recent convention they all attended. I hadn't seen Joel on anything since his run ended on the show. They also have clips from the cable station they started on, as well as full episodes of MST3K. My wife said it was tough to get, but now it's out everywhere. I loved the show, and miss it. I used to tape the Thanksgiving marathons from comedy central.

No contest Joel, he was the original and the best. He was so low key and chill, it was perfect. I loved when Gypsy would get depressed and Joel would console her.
I remember watching the show on channel 23 in Minneapolis (a uhf station none the less, remember uhf?) in the early days when they took viewer calls and prank called pizza places, the show was really cheap and out of control ,Joel held it all together. During one episode they did a Joel is dead things like the Beatles Paul is dead.

Joel got my vote. I think the next poll should be for favorite show bad guys....fat woman...evil scientists? Good stuff!
One thing on rifftrax - there are some .AVI torrents that have the riffing layered over the movie so you don't have to sync the audio with your own copy of the movie. I had always wished they would do MST3K to modern movies and now it's kinda a reality....crow and tom servo are now fat old guys, but nothing is perfect :)

I haven't done the Rifftrax, but I have bought the newer Film Crew DVDs, which have Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy doing commentary on crappy old films. Not as funny as MST3K, but there's still some good laughs in there.
I miss MST3K. I will continue to buy every DVD set that comes out (just got the latest one in the mail the other day, woo!). I seem to prefer Mike over Joel but for no particular reason. I have many favorite episodes but more memorable ones are Red Zone Cuba, Eegah!, and Space Mutiny (Big Mc. Largehuge!!)

Former WWE wrestler Snitsky will be staring in the sequel to 'Manos: The Hands of Fate'.
It'll be called 'Manos: The Search for Valley Lodge. (http://news.oneindia.in/2010/07/08/worst-movie-ever-made-will-now-have-a-sequel.html)' Hopefully they'll do a RiffTrax when it comes out.
