I'd never watch that trash isn't it like 3 hours of bad songs. The hills are alive with douch chills. Julie Andrews is a cunt.

Does Velvet Goldmine count as a musical? It's insanely gay and rocktastic at the same time.

Generally, a main reason you become engaged in a character is through them showing you how they feel. The guy wants the girl, he holds a boom box over his head outside her house. Through that, we see how much she means to him and we connect to him. In a musical, nobody shows us anything. Instead, they sing their emotions and simply tell us how they feel, what they want, etc. It becomes much more difficult for us to connect to the character because they're essentially bitching and moaning rather than taking action.

"Dreamgirls" was soooooooooo bad. and i wanted to like it cuz im an early Eddie Murphy fan and i really want to see him in a good movie and i want to see him deserve an academy award nom.
but i agree, musical sucks. my parents took my to "the producers" with lane and broderick, "spamalot" with the guy from Frasier and the guy from Rocky horror and "young frankenstein". I thought "the producers" was fun, but the other stuff i was like "eh". would hate to know how much my parents spent on my ticket
its rare that a musical rules. I'll say "little shop of horrors" movie rules (bill murray.."candy bar, candy bar candy bar!"). "Cannibal the musical" of course. and there is rumors of them turning Pink Floyd's "The Wall" into a broadway play and if they do i'll get a ticket to NY to see it...but after that and the "so-cheesy its good" movie version of Tommy...yeah, musicals suck

I thought "Young Frankenstein" was pretty damn good.
And, unfortunately, musicals aren't appreciated nearly as much by males because they feel it makes them gay. I don't really understand this logic.
I would have to say my favorite shows are "Into the Woods" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". Completely different, but awesome all the same.

seriously, i have no fear of being thought of as gay
and i thought when i saw "the producers" on broadway it had some funny funny shit in it (that wasnt represented in the film version of the play). Still, i thought the original film version was funnier
my parents are big Mel Brooks fan so we got tickets for "The Producers" before it got all the praise and awesome reviews. and it was enjoyable
we are also big monty pythons fans so we got tickets for "Spamalot". We saw the first show Hank Azaria wasn't in (they had the guy who played Steve the pirate in Dodgeball in that role instead) and it had some chuckles but it wasn't as good to me as any of the monty python movies
and "young frankentstein" was just garbage...anything funny in the movie they extended to an 9min song so the original joke wasn't funny anymore and it was just boring
its not a gay thing at all. and i'll admit to liking gay themed movies. i liked "brokeback mountain" and "party monster". Its just my own personal enjoyment.
but good musicals on film to check out will always be "Cannibal the Musical" and "Little Shop of Horrors". As much shit as Norton talks about Steve Martin, this is BRILLIANT

Though I loved the music in Velvet Goldmine I couldn't stand the fact that these characters were supposed to be T Rex, Iggy, Lou Reed and Bowie but they had different names and looked different. I guess they couldn't use their real names but it just bugged me. Life on Mars (the American version) just had an episode like this--the guy was a glam/glitter guy named something stupid but he obviously was supposed to be one of the famous glam guys from the early 70s.

Musicals always seem to me to be an oddly half-assed genre. I actually don't mind opera, which is music wall-to-wall. But the sudden musical number in the middle of a musical just doesn't work for me.

i enjoy musicals, i sing musicals, i act and dance them.
i usually listen to them in my car.
i sometimes make money performing in them.
sometimes i don't.
but i always enjoy bursting out into song.
btw... i enjoyed Dreamgirls ..and West Side Story is one of the most wonderful masterpieces to hit a broadway stage and national tour (i danced that choreography!!) ... but the Music Man is a piece of garbage IMHO.

It's was supposed to be about all the real glam musicians with a focus on Bowie, but he bailed after reading the script and refused to lend his name or music, so they tweeked the script and the characters after that happened.

My god how I hate musicals. I truly hate them.
Even when I was a kid, I simply couldn't get passed the bizarre-ness of a bunch of characters just sitting around... and then bursting into song (always facing front, natch)... and then going right back to what they were doing.
The whole thing is lost on me. No connection.
I have to say,
I enjoy Little shop of horrors (as Gaz said), and also
Guys & Dolls
West Side Story
Fiddler on the Roof
Sound of Music
and My Fair Lady.
it's not Goodfellas, but I have to admit I like em.
