One thing I just found out about Bobby Womack is that he wrote the Rolling Stones' first hit single , 1964's "It's All Over Now."

Glad to see Little Anthony and Jeff Beck make it though.

The members of the voting body have ears.

Congratulations to Spooner Oldham.

I don't mean to bag on any of the current inductees, but no one in their right mind could argue that Run-DMC was EVER as big as Rush. In popularity or sales.

SETTLE THE BEEF: DOES RUSH DESERVE THE HALL OF FAME?: "'You are yet to be inducted,' Stephen Colbert asked the Canadian power trio on his show in June. 'Is there any chance that your next album will be titled That's Bullsh*t?' A fair, and hilarious, question, and one with legs..." - Wired.com, Aug. 2, 2008

Look at influence over music and cultural significance. I believe RunDMC trumps Rush.

Sorry, still don't see it.

Let's see...

Influential pioneers of a burgeoning and eventually gigantic genre.

Were really the first of their genre to bring rock elements into rap.

One of the first of their genre accepted by the mainstream.

Also, they have hits, which Rush never really did.

Leaving the music itself aside, Rush has die-hard fans and has a fanbase that has continued to buy their albums and see their shows for 30+ years, which is impressive, but other than a period in the early to mid-80s, they were never really embraced beyond their core audience. You also don't see as many musicians pointing to their influence as you do to RunDMC.

I have to sort of disagree with you here. Run-DMC ABSOLUTELY belongs in the hall but so does Rush. Run-DMC influenced rappers, not musicians. I seriously doubt that some kid picked up a guitar because of DJ Run or Jam Master Jay. But there have no doubt been countless people who became bassists because of Geddy Lee and drummers because of Neal Peart.

Rod Beck and Tony Womack? What kinda crack are these writers smoking. Beck was a decent closer I guess but Tony Womack couldnt shine Delino DeShields' shoes

No, silly. This is about the ROCK AND ROLL HOF....not the BASEBALL one!

To say that a turntable in the hands of a capable turntablist isn't a musical instrument simply isn't true, and many a young person took up DJing due to JMJ.

Fair enough. Handling the steel wheels takes a special talent.

I'll never forget walking into my neighborhood record store in 1984 and hearing that killer music for the first time coming over the house speakers. My friend and I had to know who it was. We asked the record clerk who he was playing. Run DMC. There was nothing like it. Man was it good. It was something new. I bought the 45. Then later the album. Their second album came out a year later I believe and I got that too. After they did Walk This Way with Aerosmith I kind of lost interest. Not because of the song--I just don't remember listening to them anymore after that. Run DMC deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Rush does too. Anything I say wont convince a naysayer so I won't even try.

Explain why you liked them for the other minute and 20 seconds.

For the record I would just like to say that I didn't mean to imply that Run-DMC shouldn't be in. I most definitely think they should and I do recognize their contribution to their genre. I just don't see them influencing others outside of Rap like A.J. said. Sorry.

Oh, and to say that they had hits and Rush didn't is ridiculous. The only songs I could name off the top of my head for Run-DMC are "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way", one of which isn't even theirs. "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta" and "Limelight" alone are bigger than anything Run-DMC put out.

Is there some rule that the HoF has to enter so many acts every year? A little more selectivity would make this a more interesting thing. Every year a half a dozen get in. Ease up a little and make it more special thats my suggestion.

How exactly is Red Barchetta a hit? I don't think I've ever even heard it on the radio. It certainly was never released as a single.

In the interest of applying stats, I did some research. I did some research. Rush had 7 singles that hit the Hot 100, only one breaking the top 40 (New World Man hit #21 in 1982). By comparison, Run DMC had 5 hits on the Hot 100, including 3 that with high chart positions (Walk this Way hit #4, You Be Illin hit #3, and Down with the King hit #21). Of course both made regular appearances on more genre-specific charts (US R&B and US Mainstream Rock). Not sure how those two compare.

So basically Rush had 2 more singles in the Hot 100 than Run DMC and Run DMC had 2 singles that placed higher than Rush's in the Hot 100 top ten. Big deal. It really surprises me you didn't find Spirit of the Radio or Tom Sawyer on there.

Maybe now that they've stopped completely ignoring hard rock/metal they'll do the right thing and put Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in as well.
