I can't remember if I started a thread about this before. I searched and couldn't find it.

I want to be a writer. Poetry, short stories, short-short stories, plays...

I have no clue about how I'm going to get noticed. I've been told that I have talent, but I know that this may not be true.

Where should I go for honest opinions? And if I feel confident in my work, how do I go about getting it noticed?

I wrote a play that is getting put on. It all happened by chance. I still need to get the copyright stuff figured out though.

I have no idea as to your situation, by why not try to intern at a publishing house? If not that, there are local bookstores everywhere that sponsor reading nights with local authors. You could attempt to get yourself an agent although, believe me, you have to be careful. Poetry readings, local community theater for your plays, etc. Honestly I know a lot more about screenplays than the rest of it, but these are a few random thoughts.

It seems you are already noticed if there is a play in the works.

Do you strictly write plays or do you delve into poetry, short stories, etc?

I had a girlfriend who wrote poetry. The way she got noticed was to hound the head of the poetry department at our college. They get so many entries for their journals and whatnot, that you have to make sure that his/her eyes see it while you are there. At that point her poetry was passed off to someone higher up and it was published in a big poetry journal. She also interned at the bowery poetry club in nyc and went to so many readings to increase her experience.

The only real way to get noticed is to be good. If she wasn't good and still hounded people then she wouldn't have been published.

As far as Copyright, that is easy stuff. You can bring it to the copyright office. It just has to be an original idea fixed in a tangible medium. It also has to be an expression and not an idea. Like you can't c/r the play if it is in your head, but when you put it on paper it is copyrightable. You don't have to bring it to the copyright office but if you were to sue someone for infringement it is good evidence to have.

If you have the play bought by someone else you might have to assign or transfer the c/r - depending on the deal you were to make. Recording contracts have assignment clauses where basically the albums are works for hire and the recording company has the c/r and not the artist. however, if you don't sign an assignment/transfer clause or tell someone you are willing to do that, then you don't have to worry and you hold the copyright.

Any other questions - just ask.

start sending out your stuff to literary journals. expect rejection. dont stop. there's a reason why writers become alcholics.

join a local writer's circle for feedback. if you cant find one join www.editred.com

The girl I'm seeing goes to an acting school in NYC. A friend of hers, who is a star down in Venezuela and comes from the "hollywood" family down there, wanted to put on a play. My girl tells her I write and the other girl agrees to take a look. She likes my stuff, We're hoping to put it on in NYC at Stella Adler, and then we will be putting it on in Venezuela.

I've been told I have a writing style similar to Mamet(I think it's just because I use vulgarity).

I don't strictly write plays. I used to write a lot of poetry and had some put in an anthalogy at my school. I went through a phase where I started to think of poetry as being a simple form of art that anyone could do. Since then, however, I've rekindled my love for poetry and have started writing poems often (I still think anyone can write poetry).

And if anyone would like to read some stuff and provide me with feedback, that would be greatly appreciated.
