A guy I work with is suggesting a Lenovo laptop (basically and IBM thinkpad he says). Does anyone have one of these or have any experience with them?

I'm typing on one now.

It's a chinese thinkpad. It's fine.

Lenovo was actually building all the IBM Thinkpads anyway, even before IBM decided to get out of the laptop business and just let them brand them themselves.

Yep. use 'em exclusively in my company for years. Solid performers, well-constructed and reasonably priced. Support is as good as any others I've ever had to use.

Lenovo is consistently ranked high amongst independent evaluations. I love mine, does not come with a lot of bloatware, and has a great warranty. If I did not buy my Lenovo laptop I would have gone Acer again.

lenovo bought out IBM laptop division. IBM laptops are the absolute TOP laptops in the entire world, bar none. i use my IBM thinkpad (which is now owned by lenovo) as well as every fortune 500 company i've worked at. they are top notch, the most professional quality, best laptop you can purchase, period.

if you are talking about desktops, then i have no idea. but laptops there are none better.

My ex's dad is an executive at IBM. For what that's worth, he's always recommended Lenovo to me.

i agree with this, all the major companies use them. they are usually great laptops, but much more expensive then a dell or HP.

I have been using them for the last few years at work and I never had a problem.

what sucks is that thinkpads are more expensive than any other laptop out there. but its well worth the monies IMO. they are basically corporate business machines, not really consumer laptops. but i use them personally and i have no choice at work since all companies use only IBM thinkpads.

I got my Lenovo. I haven't used it much yet but the greatest part so far, compared to Dell, is that it isn't loaded up with five thousand garbage software programs I'll never use.

the big question here that nobody appears to have asked . . . is what do you want the computer to be able to do?

I just bought a PC for $5 from my work, old workstations, comes with a celeron and nothing fancy . . . . works for me. All I want to do is browse the web, download stuff and watch videos on youtube. Works fine for that . . . and this is a four year old workstation.

But if I wanted to do photo, video or sound editing . . . this machine wouldn't cut it.

It all depends on what you need out of it.

My Lenovo / IBM TP T60 is rock solid. No problems - web, e-mail, spreadsheet. Not for gamers. There was a conspiracy theory that Lenovo was putting secret backdoor access so the Chinese could spy on our gov agencies that use their lappys. I dunno about that but pretty funny if true.

Honestly, Dell isn't so bad about that either. You can opt out of most of that shit as you configure your computer (and, at the very least, you shouldn't request the awful "security software" they put on there; just download Avast and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on when you get it). HP is by far the biggest offender in loading down computers with bullshit you need to uninstall as soon as you get it.

Prices for Lenovo models are amazingly low these days if you buy directly from their site. They have constant sales, and coupon codes appear almost daily. (Most are posted at Slickdeals.com)

I agree they are still the best, although Panasonic Toughbooks are neck and neck with them for build quality. Toughbooks are not as easy on the eye, however.

They make perhaps one of the coolest laptops ever.

Weird. I thought for sure I mentioned the W700DS. It is their workhorse model now. :)
