websites? Magazines? Word of Mouth? Mooch's Show Openings? How? I need to know!

I've recently been turned on to some new stuff by revisiting the last year's show openings (I record for later and usually skip the opening). THere's some good stuff out there and I need to know how to find it!

I find new music hard to come by, recently I have simply found it by shopping in CD stores, local ones, not chains, maybe they play something really cool..
this has worked for some friends...www.pandora.com

Websites, XM43/51, a local radio station (http://www.radiomilwaukee.org/home.asp), television commercials and the RF show.

Is CMJ still good? I let my subscription run out a couple of years ago.

Yes and no. Their pubishing schedule is still touch and go and the magazine is much thinner tha it used to be, but the sampler is still usually pretty good. I also love the "if you like these bands, you'll probably like this band" aspect of their reviews. Makes it much easier to zero in on nw stuff I'll probably enjoy.

1. Local record shops are often playing the new product. Find a good shop, find good music. (Specifically, Other Music in NYC)
2. I follow my favorite labels - this takes a great amount of trust but can be worth it. (I take a lot of chances there)
3. When Paulisded posts his new release list I listen to every artist on there that I don't already know. I buy albums based on the myspace postings.
4. Most importantly, I listen to a lot of WFMU.

British magazines - Word, Mojo, Uncut, even Q. All of them blow away American music magazines for not only the features but the album reviews.

I'll check out their reviews to see what's come out import-wise that's not over here, but all of those magazines have basically become the same thing at this point. I like their reviews for British and European bands, but their reviews of American acts outside of the big ones or the ones they fawn over are really bad. I gotta balance it between the UK and US mags.

And fuck the NME. That rag should have folded with Melody Maker.

Guitar Hero. And no, I'm not kidding. That fucking game got me really into stupid Dragonforce. I'd heard so many bad things about them and really wanted to hate the song when I finally unlocked it, but I couldn't.

They come from a lot of difference sources. The show opens are a big source, then of course friends, movies, youtube.

Sometimes I poke around Itunes and see if anything catches my ear...but most of the time they come from the most random sources.

Even CMJ isn't what it used to be, just as subterranean on MTV2 doesn't compare to the 120 minutes of old.

Too many outlets is the problem.

Back in the day, you were an act, you got heard, other people heard you, you worked your way up through the ranks.

Now, you post on YouTube.

Are you good?

Who can tell?

Is there a place to buy you? Um, No.

Perfect storm in my mind.

Takes work to find talent in any generation.

Google alerts for all of my favorite artists/bands. Gets annoying sometimes but is worth it for all the free mp3s you get.

I have an eMusic sub. They have a pretty good "if you like this, you'll also like this" feature. Kind of like Amazon does.

That's actually the perfect analogy. Both still serve a purpose, but are nowhere near as good as they once were or could be.

Aside from friends, I check out local college radio quite often.

I used to DVR all of the episodes on VH1 Classic. They show some really good stuff, but after a few weeks, I started to see the same videos over and over again. You'd think they'd have a bigger library.

Movies and TV shows. Sometimes the suggestion thingy for other bands you might like but not usually because the suggestions are retarded.
