View Full Version : Acer Aspire One - recommendations?

My friend is not a big computer person, but she wants to get a lap top and just genarally mess around on the net.
She asked me about these Acer Aspire One's and I saw there were a few models. Anyone use these things or know if they are any good?
I did notice that I did not see any that had optical drives, which may explain their low price.
Are these things worth the money?
Any other recommendations?
She doesnt have a lot of money to spend.
Thanks

I am not a fan of these under powered "net" mini notebooks. Check out Dell, HP, or Lenovo's websites and you can find deals on laptops with 15" screens for a similar price.
Example: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087¤t-category-id=470B0F10C05B42BF83330C5211DCE0FD

I got this exact model for my wife for Christmas.
Very cool and I want one myself. Great for surfing and that type of use.. but not typing a novel or dissertation. Then you might want a full sized keyboard and monitor.

Except that someone looking for a mini notebook is usually looking for something small, not something with a 15 inch screen.

Those are at cheapest $600 - I got the Aspire One off newegg.com for $350 w/ xp. If you'd rather linux, even better at $300.

I've been doing a lot of research on them lately, as my personal laptop is about to die and I'm tired of lugging around my work laptop.
Cnet has some great info (http://reviews.cnet.com/4370-3121_7-214-106.html?tag=mncol;pm)
If you're a member of Sam's Club they also have a couple of deals (http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/18265/Dell-Inspiron-Mini-9-Netbook-Intel-Atom-1-6-GHz--512MB-DDR2--4GB-SSD--Ubuntu-Linux-199%3B-Or-W-8GB-SSD--1GB-DDR2--Webcam--XP-Home-245-W-Sams-Club-Membership).

I love how people call them underpowered, I dare you to say you can feel a difference between a 1ghz and a 3ghz dual core when browsing the internet.
I'd get one and throw kubuntu on it, its fab.

I always hated these little notebooks. They look cool as hell, but I'd rather have a 15" screen so I can see what I'm surfing to rather than a tiny notebook.
Eh, I'm sure they have their uses but for what I want to use my laptop for, I'll stick to my 17" widescreen HP.

The difference between a nice media phone and that Sony Vaio P series is really shrinking! These little atom based netbooks are tempting but more as a toy instead of something you would do much real work on. Still, looks fun.

that's my problem with them. You're not going to be able to view videos well on them, have a lot of storage space, game on them or have a very large keyboard to IM or just word process. I'm sure they have an extremely small selection of ports and drives on them, if any at all. I can't imagine these things not at least having 1 USB port on them but I could be wrong.
They are cool as fuck but I just can't see many practical uses for them. If I'm wrong I'll be one of the 1st people to get one, seriously. I love these fucking gadgets.
i got one for my wife. it wouldn't work for my needs, but it's great for what she uses it for. it's perfect for checking imdb or some blogs while you watch tv, email, recipes in the kitchen, toss in a bag and go to the coffee shop, actually check out real estate listings as you drive around (she does as I drive around).
we have a real computer for real stuff (and porn), so this little one is great for surfing. it's got a bunch of ports and card slots, so if you really wanted you could hook up other drives i guess, but if that's what you want get something else anyway.
i say you should get it.
oh... and i got it on amazon, free shipping.

I just went and looked a bit at some on Newegg and other such sites. These things could be interesting now that I consider that fact that if you could power them, they could be a working computer you take with you as an MP3 player with like 200 gigs of space. Just play the WMP and run the headphone cord to your car stereo.
Then you could use it as a computer at Wifi spots.
I think I just did a 180. My fucking 5 year old U2 original iPod is on it's last legs, I may just invest in this thing and run an inverter out of my cigarette lighter to power the fucking thing. Fucking iPods are like 200-300 anyway it seems for something with 40-80 gigs anyway, just get a fucking mini laptop instead.
This might just fucking melt faces it's such an Epic Win.

All I do is go online and listen to music. I also need something better for work, and all I really need there is excel and word. Transporting my 15 inch laptop for work now sucks, so getting a 10inch netbook is perfect for me.
They're basically flash drives with a keyboard and screen.

A lot of the netbooks come with bluetooth. There's bound to be a program that will dial online for you, and you can just use a basic bluetooth headset to make phone calls through the computer.
I just enjoy that you changed your mind so quickly in this thread. These netbooks are badass.

Yea I tend to do that, I'm dumb.
Problem here was that at 1st I was thinking "This thing can't do nearly as many things as my current latpot, why would I need one?" I was just thinking of using this mini laptop in the same ways I use my full size.
But now that I stopped that and considered all the outside things I could use it for, like bringing it along as a MP3 and small video player as well as being a functional wifi comp, it's just an incredible thing.

Yea I hear ya man. Past experiences with these kinds of things have jaded me too. Aerosmith penned a song about it.
Anyway, I'm really gunning for this fucking thing now. I picked out what color I want, just have to convince myself to actually do it. It's actually cheaper to get a 120 gig iPod, but I still think I want the Acer laptop. I think it's worth an extra 80 bucks to get a whole computer instead of just the iPod.

Always price out new HD's and memory for your prospective system before you pop for the upgrades on the site. The only thing that's not easily upgraded is the processor, so you're probably better off paying for a better processor, then doing the memory/HD upgrades yourself later.

Yes, but via Newegg.com you win in the end. Memory and if you have a slower HD and upgrade to a faster one then you win in the end. The processor only turns clock cycles and you can catch up and have a faster lappy with basic upgrades.

Tough to say due to the Celeron, and the graphics chipset. But it can be fun and cheap to upgrade. I would upgrade the Linux to Ubuntu first though for ease of use and because I have no clue about the Linpus version (which is not a real reason, just my ignorance of that particular version).

I decided against getting the little Acer One laptop for my personal music player. As I thought out how I use my iPod, it would be too much trouble to have a laptop in my car. I know you're not supposed to, but I can pick up the iPod with 1 hand and flip around looking for music as I'm driving. If I was using the laptop I'd have to navigate inside Windows Media Player with the built in mouse and that would be way more dangerous.
Also, I'm not sure how long the battery would last on the laptop but I know even my old iPod's battery will last like 5 hours. I need my iPod to fall asleep places I'm not used to sleeping like other people's houses or hotels so I just really need the iPod.
Now that I already have the iPod coming, I really have little use for the Acer. I'm disappointed because it looks cool as shit but it's an expense I don't think I'm gonna spring for just yet.

Yea that sounds like a good idea. You can just sit it there without interacting with it too much. My concern was how I was going to be using it. I can't really be looking over at it everytime it shuffles to a song I don't really want to year. With an iPod I can hit one button without even looking down and go to the next song.
If I needed it for any kind of business I'd quickly buy one and put the mobile broadband USB thing in it.

And the Garmin plug in unit has text to speech and was only $99. Plus my car stereo has an Aux port and an USB port so I can port songs from iTunes into my car speakers as well as the text to speech.
Your iPod likely has an adapter that fits your car stereo so you can control it there instead of having to tough the ipod itself.

It doesn't, it just has a Aux 3.5" port I have a Male-Male wire in that goes to my iPod. It's kind of a ghetto set up but fuck it, it's worked this long and it will work with any audio device that has a 3.5" out jack so it's good enough for me.

Yea, I do not have an iPod but do have a SanDisk which works great plugged into the Aux but will only recharge if plugged into the USB port. My head unit does not support anything but an iPod adapter, damn popularity!

So, did I get fucked or not?
I would say "no" if all you wanted was a web browsing notebook. The low grade graphics card means this thing isn't going to play any games. The Celeron processor, if it's still single core, isn't that fast compared to the newer ones.
But it is a full size screen, full size keyboard, has a DVD-RW and 120gig HD, so it's not bad. You'll pay $300 bucks for the Acer One we've been talking about and it has a 85% sized keyboard and like 9" screen.
You saved like $100-150 by NOT buying a machine with Windows on it too. If I were you, I'd put Windows on it. If you don't have a copy laying around....well, ya know. Windows just ends up on machines sometimes, strangely.:devil2:
I'd lean more towards you DIDN'T get fucked, but it's not the best deal on the planet. There's always a reason you're paying a lower price for something.

I got my Dell Inspiron Mini 9 last week. It has 1gb ram, 4gb solid state drive, ubuntu, cost $280 after shipping & tax. It's a nice computer,,,,,,,,, I can finally post from my kitchen or my living room couch if I choose. I bought it originally for my car like Moe was going to do but right now I havent really done much in that respect yet......... we'll see

I went to HP 1st when shopping for a netbook but their inexpensive ones only had small, solid state HDs. Same with Dell. If I'm gonna spend like $300 I want a lot of storage. I can get a 4 gig MP3 player for like 20 bucks.
Those little Acer's have the market cornered so far as far as a netbook with a decent amount of storage space on it.

Agree with Moe if you are looking to browse the net. You can even watch DVDs on it. A 15" screen makes a big difference over a 9" or even a 12" screen due in part to pixels per inch not just resolution.

In the continued battle to always torture myself with tech and geek shit that I want but can't use and shouldn't buy but will probably end up getting eventually, I present you with this:
From Amazon.com
ASUS Eee PC 904HA 8.9-Inch Netbook (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GIPSAW/ref=s9_sims_c2_s2_p147_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=026F9JFHCF0V6VB6BTJQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470939031&pf_rd_i=507846)
from Newegg:
ASUS Eee PC 904HA 8.9-Inch Netbook (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220442)
If you read the 1st, very helpful review on Amazon's site about this netbook, it tells you that memory upgrade from the existing 1gig to it's max 2gig is extremely easy while he had seen something online that the Acer might be kinda tricky. This is the kinda shit you don't really know about until you dig or already own it. The Asus book has a hatch on the bottom, like almost every full sized laptop while the Acer had a more complex set of steps that could leave more novice users in a lot of trouble if they can't reassemble their shiny new piece of tech equipment.
Plus if you read the Manufacturer's Info on Newegg, Asus warranties this netbook for 2 years, a full year longer than Acer's warranty. So you might not even need to get an extended warranty if you buy the Asus which is a savings of between 60 and 80 bucks depending on where and what warranty you were thinking of getting.
After further review, I'm gonna put this Acer on the top of my list of "Things I don't need but fucking want."

Just thought I'd quickly share this one.
I'd be loading music on my new Acer right now if they had them in the 2 Wal Marts I went to. After taking my grandma to breakfast, I stopped in at the Wal Mart near the IHOP. They only hade white Acer's in stock. I decided to go to my local Wal Mart, I had just seen blue ones there not more than 2 days prior. Showed up and they were completely sold out of all colors.
It was only after doing some thinking and looking at the costs of the laptop with shipping and the warranty coupled with it's inability to be as driver friendly as an iPod that made me not buy it.
So if Wal Mart had just stocked better, I'd be sitting here with one of their Acers.
Oh well, Apple has my money now fool!

It has a built in wireless connection in it, that's all the computer needs. What you need to do is either call your internet service provider and ask them for a router with a built in wireless connection, or get an aftermarket one to put on your internet service provider's router you already have.
Then you just configure your laptop to access your wireless router which is easy.
MAKE SURE you use encryption. If not, someone close to you or someone who drove by could use your open wireless signal. This, at it's most innnocent, means you are sharing your bandwidth with others thereby slowing your internet down. At it's worst, they could download whatever they want on your connection and even access files you forgot you left in your Shared Files folder if you set up a home network. It's a quick, easy step, please encrypt.

You exchange one for the other. It is more complicated to use both and can cause issues.

Exactly. No offense, but if you asked the question "what do I do now" just call them. Tell them you're getting a wireless laptop and you want one of their routers with wireless capabilities. It should be a couple days of waiting for the mail and sending your wired one back.
When you get it, either come back here or call them to get help setting it up. PLEASE remember to encrypt your signal. It's well worth it.

Can you link any articles you have about that? It's very troubling to me because I absolutely love HP. My 1st laptop was a used Dell that died fast, next one was a refurbished HP that lasted like 2 to 3 years before having problems. When I needed a new laptop HP had the best site to build them with the best options. I even sent my grandmother there.
I'd really be upset to know I selected one of the shittier companies as far as customer service.

i think I got the base model, while yours has a hard drive right? All of my storage needs are on my server, so I got the model with the 17 GB SSD, and then upgraded it with two 8 GB SD cards for when I am away from the house.
My only complaint with these is the mouse pad. It is too small for me, but I got a USB wireless mouse for both of them.
My wife uses hers to do her nursing stuff, and I use mine to post here and browse the internet for news. And by news, I mean porn. They're great for what we need them for.
Got them from Tiger Direct for 258 bucks apiece, with 2.00 dollars shipping UPS Ground.

Ah cool. Yea, storage is a big deal to me so I'd have to go with something with at least 60gigs onboard, personally.
I'm really considering this one now too, but one thing I see is no RAM access on the bottom. Do you know if there's ram access on the thing or how to upgrade it?

I don't think so. There is a spot on the bottom of mine that is an access panel with two screws. But the panel doesn't look big enough to be a service area for RAM. Unless the RAM chips on these models are smaller then what I'm used to.

Very true. Plus, I have looked at several of these models via Best Buy and a buddy who works there.
The HP and Dell are easier to upgrade the memory. The Eee requires a little skill an know how since it's RAM is near a speaker. The Eee has a very common, easy to find, and cheep RAM upgrade module. I still favor the Eee and I know how to dissemble most lappys. It is more screws and less of a "hatch" to do but is perfectly doable without ruining it. As far as warranty, easy to get past like many items. Just ask and I'll share.

Just thought I'd top this thread and let everyone know I just put in my order for a copper colored 8.9" Acer Aspire One with the 160gig HD.
I have been pouring over Netbooks on the internet and kinda forgot about the Acer when I saw other Netbooks but that all changed suddenly with the arrival of a Wal Mart E-mail. Rollback price on the thing was $258.
I was shocked because that same Netbook from them was going for $330 a few weeks ago when I started to do my research. THe 120gig one was the $300 thing in the stores but this slightly larger capacity one was going for 330 or so. I REALLY checked the fine print, looked over everything and it was legit. A "NEW" Acer Aspire One with the 160gig HD for 258. It's really the kind of thing I've been waiting for so I just used what little buying power I have in this bad economy to pick it up. I mean really I did save myself about $60 bucks. It should be to my house in the middle of next week so I'll get it, play with it and let ya know my opinion on the Acer.
And I'm sorry but it's not on their website, it seems to be an E-mail only promotion. I went and looked at the various Acer Netbooks on their website and it's not a sale for everyone. I checked for you, figured a lot of the tech heads would want one at that price too.

I will let you know how it goes. I'm getting my warranty through Squaretrade, the people I got from Woot!. They have a 3 year warranty with accidental damage for 70 bucks and I have a promo code to use to get like 30% off another warranty until the end of the month. Can't beat that.
I've owned and worked with a lot of different machines so I hope I have a fairly medium to high understanding and expectation with this new Netbook. I'll try to be objective. Those of you who read my recent Amazon thread might not take me as an objective guy, so let's just hope the fucking Acer doesn't shit the bed. :devil2:

The only draw back to the large HD netbooks is that they aren't SSD. But I think I'm going to get one of the 120 or 160gig netbooks anyway. Let me know how you like yours.
I've heard different things about SSD. I REALLY want them to work because they basically mean the end of hard drive hardware related crashes but as of right now I've heard of a lot of loading time issues. I hope those go away.

The only problem with SSD right now is manufacturing price. It is still expensive to take a HD controller board and add tons of EPROM (type of RAM) to it. Otherwise it loads fast, less heat, no problems with dust since it is sealed, and will smoke a Raptor by a mile.

I had heard about program load times with some SSD hard drives on a few retail site's review forums on them. Maybe it was somewhat isolated but I saw it on a couple sites. I really hope there are no problems because I can't wait for the 1st line of under $200 SSD that are at least 300-500gig. I'll be there.

I have heard of isolated cases but I felt that the ones that I saw were related to user error and not the actual SSD.

Trends show that in the next year SSDs will be more affordable. The Raptors are currently the fastest platter based HDs and are worth the money if you are a serious gamer.
My 2 75 gig Raptors are 3 or 4 years old and still cranking.

Well I am posting from my copper colored Acer One right now. The keyboard is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be.
I just spent about an hour between letting it go through it's initial start up which as many know takes the longest, then uninstalling programs they loaded I didn't want and putting Avast! on it.
It's pretty nice. It even came with a free small optical mouse which is kewl.
So I don't know, it's exactly what I thought it was going to be. It's an ultra portable notebook otherwise known as the Netbook.
I'll give it a few days and post with my thoughts about it. So far, it's nice.

Well I wanted one of the colors I don't usually see stocked in the stores. Everyone has the white or blue one. Black is pretty classic but this time I went with the copper. To tell you the truth it's fairly dark, not that metallic looking, at least in doors. Looks almost black in a day lit room.
This thing paid for itself already. I'm posting this from the toilet. I can hold the thing with one hand and surf with the other or put my knees together and type like I'm doing now.
Love it.
Oh, and for the mental picture I just put in your head after reading this....
You're welcome.

I agree with not having the "common" color.
And thank you.

Using it again right now next to my XM Radio on my kitchen table. Battery will give me about 2.5 hours if that's accurate. Going to look into a larger cell battery soon.
Having no problems typing on it with my decently sized man hands. Have had no problems reading anything on it. Videos on Youtube stream fine. They did skip a little when I moved the mouse around a lot but hey, I know what I bought. The processor is the size of a fucking penny, it's pretty amazing this thing even exists.
It is fucking LIGHT. I was surfing with it last night in bed. As I was waiting for my copy of Microsoft Office to install I actually fell asleep with the thing on my chest. I didn't even notice it was there.
Really liking this thing. It's gonna be nice to have it this weekend. Have a show in PA so I will sleep at my friend's house that night and go home the next day. I'll be using this thing in the guest room to surf until I'm tired enough to actually roll over and go to sleep.
More updates later. Hope I don't find any problems.
