I'm not sure what the legs of this thread will be, but after coming home from the Jazz Standard last night I felt compelled to start it.
I mentioned in a few places on the board I was going to see Esperanza Spalding with my wife as a post-Valentine's Day deal. This little girl smoked it! Kinda-Jazzy, Kinda-Funky, good voice.
There is not much in this world that makes me happier than great live music, in particular live jazz.
There is also not much in this world that makes me happier than listening to Miles' "Kind of Blue" or Monk's "Alone in San Francisco".
Any fans of jazz music feel free to post about it here.

Stephane Grappelli is my lifetime hero. I wish i could play like him. He pretty much invented jazz, in my mind anyways.
Get down to some Jimmy Smith and that funky beat:

What I hope to get from this thread at a minimum is some good shit to check out. I am a fan of Jazz, but by no means an expert. I'm glad epo's got my back (and Whiskey, I'll be checking out Mr. Grappelli too).

Im not joking...the band is Skeriks Syncopated Taint Septet, the album Husky. BUY IT!!! It is one of the best over all albums i own. I really like jazz and this album blows evrything else away. Its very modern, the organ and drums are my favorite thing about this band. These videos dont do it alot of justice.

What a lineup. Featuring Tony Williams on drums, arguably one of the best drummers ever.

Obviously Coltrane is a God, but I saw McCoy Tyner last year at the Blue Note and he was great. Having a really good backing band helped his too. There was a strange segment in the middle where he brought out Savion Glover to tap dance to a couple of tunes, but even that wasn't too bad.

No - I've heard NOMO's album (Ghost Rock?) Anyway, I'd call it post-rock, not Jazz.
I'd call this Jazz:

I've never really heard the term "post rock" used before to describe music (maybe I'm a little behind) but that term seems to apply well to this music.
