you gotta love this line:

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

it's all about context. like when some conservative christian preacher who rails out against homosexuality gets caught having a gay affair, his religion is always brought into play. when the governor of a garden state gets caught, his religion is not mentioned.

i understand that. and if a christian ran a christian web-site for example and had a gay affair i believe his religion would get called into play. i don't think there is some double-standard here. the hypocrisy of the guilty is the same. like when that religious atlanta falcon propositioned a cop before the super bowl, his religion was repeatedly mentioned.

Actually, McGreevey's Roman Catholicism AND the fact that his father was a marine was both brought up during the coverage.

In response to this, if the husband killed his wife in any other way (gun, knife, etc.), then the religion isn't relevant. But using the method that is currently most associated with his religion, then, yes, it's kinda relevant.

what he said.

“This was apparently a terroristic version of honor killing, a murder rooted in cultural notions about women’s subordination to men,” said Marcia Pappas, New York State president of the National Organization for Women.

“Too many Muslim men are using their religious beliefs to justify violence against women,” she said.

And this is based on...what? What information has been revealed that indicates any one can assume this outside of him being Muslim?

Based on the details we have so far, this sounds like a nut who killed his wife.

If something comes out that indicates this was somehow "religious," hey, there you go, but for now we have nothing but people leaping to conclusions due solely to his religion. You talk about larger context, yet ignore the much larger context of men who hurt or kill women who are trying to get away from them regardless of thew religion involved, something which fits this much more than terrorist assholes beheading hostages in a warzone.

I didn't put anything into your post. I used my initial response to your post to then address other things brought up in this thread. I don't do the spoon and post a zillion seperate replies if I don't have to.

a conservative preacher who heads a national christian organization representing tens of millions of christians and who takes part in weekly phone conferences with the POTUS - his religion is relevant to a news story about him blowing a man whore for crank. But the idea that Muslim are more prone to beheading people than others is only relevant to a story of a guy beheading his wife for trying to leave him because it plays to american stereotypes and will sell more newspapers and online ad space. Last week the local papers here reported that a cambodian guy beheaded his wife for trying to leave him. His religion wasn't relevant or reported. The newspapers didn't report that two headless bodies were fished out of the Mekong River in Phnom Penh two weeks ago. People get beheaded in Columbia by FARC and the paramilitaries and in Mexico by drug gangs. Russian soldiers used to behead Chechens all the time. Traditional headhunters from Kalimantan beheaded 20-some Javanese immigrants in indonesia a few years ago - traditional animists beheading Muslims for political reasons. None of these stories recieved any significant news coverage in america. But anecdotes about every beheading by a Muslim does. It sells newspapers because of the stereotypes while keeping the stereotypes alive. Doesn't mean his religion had anything to do with a guy killing his wife for trying to leave him.

if some dude made a tv station to try to improve the way people look at catholics and then he ends up touching little boys - for the hypocrisy of it his religious beliefs would be brought up. it's no different than here.

It is different, because the clear implication from a lot of people here is that the reason he beheaded her is because he's Muslim.
