Very obvious if you have ever been out of the US. Futbol is king.

Which ever comes first.

In the U.S., The Olympics as long as they don't interfere with American Idol or Dancing With The Stars.

world cup, no-brainer.

the olympics haven't had any heat since they switched to the alternating summer-winter every 2 years schedule. an "olympic year" used to be at least somewhat exciting. now it's just a common occurrence where the main thing i think about is how much money the host city is losing by holding this monetary black hole of sports.

Way off, I'm sorry to say.

U.S. doesn't care about World Cup. China doesn't care about World Cup.

That's what percentage of the World Population right there?

Olympics, easily.

Throw in India, too. It's all about Cricket there.

That's the three most populated countries in the world.

did you see last times World Cup ratings in the US? They were huge. Which is why ESPN bought TV rights to MLS and European games and tournaments.

So were the Beijing Olympics, which I'd bet WAY outdrew it.

world cup all the way

world cup represents one sport (that transcends class) for a whole nation to focus on ... the olympics are a collection of sports that all can't relate to -- how relatable are the badminton, equestrian and fencing events

the olympics make for better TV/copy, what the athletes overcome, at times, overshadows hteir achievements

For the world, its the olympics. For europe and central/south america its world cup, most of the rest of the populated world doesnt care about soccer.

And the ratings for soccer are shit, they give them ratings in third world countries by saying that everyone crowds around the few TVs in remote villages severely inflating the numbers, when in reality if their country isnt playing they dont give a shit.

Except for Africa and Asia. Soccer is a poor mans game because you dont need much to play it.

Watching soccer in a crowded pub in Europe has to be one of the best experiences of my life. Its also something that is impossible to explain to my friends that just don't understand how anyone can be excited by the sport. The World Cup all the way!!

*edit* Of course I didn't read the title correctly. When looking at it from what the world cares about more I would have to say the Olympics because it touches every part of the word and soccer doesn't.

Not the big fish, though.

China is 20% of the World's population, and they don't care.

India is 17%. They have a lukewarm interest in soccer as a secondary sport, and most of their interest in it is local.

The United States is 5%. Soccer is AT BEST the fifth most popular sport in this country (6th if you count NASCAR as a sport).

Pakistan is another 2% of the world population. Another country that doesn't care. They're more about field hockey and cricket.

And Japan is another 2%. Baseball's the word there.

That's almost half the world population.

And the key is that ALL of these countries care about the Olympics.

The largest soccer crazed nation is Brazil, which is a shade under 3% of the World Population.

This is no contest.

Fixed it.....

I think Olympics, with the understanding that Soccer is the most popular sport. The reason that the world loves the Olympics is b/c you can be a small african nation that cant afford a soccer field, let alone stadium, and send a 3 man relay team and show up the rest of the planet.

Olympics

(oh, and because they started in Greece.)

Olymipics, every country competes and there is a lot more variety.

The variety is for me personally, but there are some countries that just do not care about soccer.

I think the world cup.
I had people left and right at work tell me scores and try to discuss it while I am really not all that into it. I watch it here and there... I guess that makes me a bad German.

olympics. just many more events to catch the non-sports fans' interests.

you know, personally I rather watch the olympics, we also grew up loving it cause the East Germans pumped up on steroids won quite a few medals so it was special for a small country as ours... AND we got to see the countries of the world that were being kept "secret" or were listed as enemies.

But living here it just seems people have a bigger interest in the World Cup than the olympics

World Cup. The world knows they will never beat the US, China or Russians in all-round count, but there's always a chance for Italy, Brazil or even England to win the World Cup.

Why, though, I have no fucking clue. Soccer is a boring ass sport. It's even more boring to play it. Too many men on the field, and too little scoring.
