Well, the last thread was at 200 pages and this season needs a fresh take. The offseason ends in 2 days and some have already made their way down to Port St. Lucie.
I hope they have the right mix of guys to put the last two Septembers behind them. Hopefully Putz and K-Rod are oblivious to changes in the calendar.
Maine is throwing pain free currently. People can't forget how huge a healthy and effective John Maine can be for this team.
Santana is not pitching in the WBC and is on target for the start of the season after offseason surgery. If he can pitch like he did last year with a presumably improved bullpen, there is no reason he can't win 20 games and a Cy Young.
Pelfrey needs to build off of last years success and become the #2. Glad Ollie is back and hope he can become consistent. Hope Neise gives a battle for the #5 spot but it looks like Redding or Garcia's job.
Reyes, Wright and Beltran are as safe a bet as there is on the team. They will be the big 3 that carry the team offensively.
Delgado worries me. If he can be effective like he was from June 27th on, they should be fine offensively. Without his bat they have a huge hole.
Ryan Church needs to be the player he was for the first month and a half. He wasn't the same player after the concussions. Hope he can be productive like he was for a whole year.
Tatis/Murphy is not a solution to left field. I think we got pretty lucky with Tatis' outburst last year and I don't see him repeating that. Murphy is going to be a stud in the league one day but I don't know if a timeshare is the best thing for him at this stage.
Luis Castillo is worthless and I expect nothing from him. Alex Cora should be ready to start 80 games.
Schnieder, Castro and Cancel should do enough to get by. Not a position of strength for sure.
Who will step up as a utility player to get big hits? Marlon did it a couple years ago, Easley too. Now I look to Cora, Marlon, Evans, Pagan, Reed/Sullivan to produce in a pinch role.
Who will step up to get outs in the 6th and 7th? Green, Robertson, Duaner, Feliciano, Kunz/Parnell, need to get big outs to get to Putz/KRod.
Hopefully, Manuel still has some magic left over from last year and the players will respond as they did.
I think they have a good group of guys and definitely have the talent to win the pennant. The division will be tough but I can't wait for it to start up again.

I'm ready. This MLB Network has been very unhealthy for me. I've counting the days to P and C reporting since Jan. 1. And to hear about the bunch of guys that got down to PSL early just got me even more jazzed. I've got a really good feeling about this season.

I heard this on WFAN and it bugged me too. If Castillo is on his game he's agreat 2nd hole, if not though who will it be? (assuming Reyes leads off because I think Manuel is just talking shit and might only try it in spring training.)

I dont' think this would be awful, IF castillo is the castillo of years past.
Reyes is not a typical leadoff hitter. He doesn't walk enough, he doesn't work on getting on base, as much as causing havoc. It has been shown in the past that (for less number of AB's) Reyes actually has better OBP and average batting 2nd.
IF castillo for example can walk to lead off an inning, wouldn't it be nice to have Reyes behind him doubling? or even if he gets a solid single, if it's 1st & 3rd - you can see Reyes take off there.
Reyes got too caught up with SB's at times in 2007- not being situational. This keeps him from getting caught up in that. Again, all of this is predicated on Castillo going back to his .370 OBP days.
As for Livan, it's what Bandit said;
load up arms, let em all compete for that 5th spot.

I dont' think this would be awful, IF castillo is the castillo of years past.
I am torn on this issue. On one hand, with Reyes leading off they get that threat of scoring in the first inning which puts them in a great position. However, I'm sure we all saw the numbers last year on run differential 1st-3rd, 4th-6th, and 7-end of game. They were atrocious at scoring runs at the end of the game. So perhaps they put too much empahsis on scoring early. Of course the shoddy bullpen didn't help much.
The other side is, if Castillo can be close to who he used to be, he does benefit from being at the top of the lineup. He should have more quality ABs then an 8-hole guy. The lineup benefits in two ways. He's more patient them Reyes and has a better OBP. Plus with him at the top, it lengthens that lineup. Instead of 7-8-9 being outs, they only have to worry about C-P. And on the days when Castro catches, I'd love to see him 7d and sub Cora eighth.
Again, this is all based on Castillo being much better than the shitbox he was last year.
I don' know if anyone said it in the other thread, but I think that the pen additions not only will help in obvious ways, but be big in intangibles.
F-Rod seems like a guy who has no fear; Sean Green may be a guy who is much better against righties, but he's had a lot of appearances in Seattle without problem, and JJ Putz, not only solidifies the 8th inning, he is maybe the biggest character the Mets have had since Ol' hotfoot, Roger McDowell.
I think this team has the right attitude to put all the old issues behind them - hopefully i'm right.

IF they're going to put Catillo first, I like Beltran 2nd and Reyes 3rd. I think Reyes would fall in to Catillo's flaws as a # 2 hitter.... trying to bunt too much, getting behind in the count to give the leadoff man time to steal way too often, ect. I don't think Beltran would fall in to those bad habits, and then Reyes would have to concentrate on one thing, hitting line drives to the gap and chasing the other two around the bases.

My immediate reaction was no as well ... but the idea of Catillo hooking himself up to the Juvination Machine, to the tune of a .370+ OBP makes it sound like a much more interesting discussion. If he can't do it though, I don't see it working well.
Also ... If they go this route, and it's working, I don't think Reyes can jump back in to leadoff whenever Castillo needs an off day. If you commit to this, Reyes stays in the 3 hole until they deem the whole experiment a failure. I don't think moving Reyes around would be good for him.

There will be tix vs Padres; forget the Phillies.

So, when do we sign Manny?
I love mlb network.
right now they are showing Tom Seaver's 300th win
(unfortunately it was with the Chi-sox) vs Yankees.
Later is a game winning hr game for Gary Carter vs Cardinals in 85.
I feel sorry for the Mets.
How do they close out the first half of the season? With a 3 game homestand against the mighty Cincinnati Reds!
We should organize a rfnet field trip.

Hahaha...that headline is SLIGHTLY misleading.
This is the best rivalry in baseball right now, though.
Historically, the best is Cubs/Cards...over the last 30 years or so, it's been Red Sox/Yanks, but right now, it's this one.
And it's because the players actually are into it. With Yanks/Sox, the fans are nuts, but the players couldn't give a fuck...they're all hired guns who do a brief tour of duty and move on.
But everyone is at each other's throat in this rivalry.

you need to include Dodgers/Giants for longevity.
Mets v Phils can be big because like Redsox /Yanks, these are too ravenous baseball towns.- but I still say its more the fans than the players.

Agreed on Dodgers/Giants, but anyone outside the Billy Crystal/Brooklyn Blowhard types will acknowledge that Cubs/Cards is a better overall historical rivalry.
It just doesn't get romanticized as much as the Dodgers/Giants because of the New York/California connection.
What makes Mets/Phils is that on top of the fan stuff, and the players sniping at each other, there is (or at least was) such an aire of desperation to win now, in the rivalry, because both franchises are historically awful, and are now pretty competitive year in and year out.
I guess we'll see if Phillies fans become more like Red Sox fans did, after they finally won.
But I'm sure that sentiment is more prevalent than ever with the Mets fans.

i agree that in the past cubs/cards and dodgers/giants were great rivalries
but lately both teams havent been good at the same time or for a long period of time
i think the yanks sawx were stuffed down our throats and theres been great playoff games with them, a key to any rivalry
sadly mets and phillies have never faced off in the playoffs, get a few nlcs matchups and this rivalry will possibly get the same coverage as the yanks sawx did and does

This is true. In the past when one team was good, the other was awful, so any competition was irrelevant.
Murphy won't bat 3rd this year.
He's too raw and hasn't developed power yet.
If Reyes bats leadoff, Murphy would be good at 2nd; otherwise he'll be a 6/7 to start.

He reminds me so much of Dave Magadan. He'll bat lower in the lineup this year. Depending on what Castillo and Church do, he'll have to wait until Delgado's gone next year to move up.

Carp went to Seattle in the JJ Putz deal. I think our best 1B prospect is Ike Davis or Lucas Duda. Davis has more upside and younger.

#14 - 1B Ike Davis
Bats/Throws: L/L
Height/Weight: 6’5”, 195 lbs
Acquired: 1st rd ’08 (Arizona State)
Born: 3/22/87 (Edina, MN)
Why Ranked Here: Davis, who had a rough professional debut, shows off plus big league raw power in batting practice. He has not taken that leverage to games yet, failing to homer in his first season as a Brooklyn Cyclone, but it’s in there. Davis has sound footwork at first and as a former pitcher in college, the arm for right. However, those other attributes are of secondary importance to a player who was drafted 18th overall for his offensive gifts.
2008: After hitting .385/.457/.742 in 52 games with Arizona State, Davis began his professional career with a 15 game hit streak over which time he hit .292/.288/.385 without drawing a single walk. By July, Davis’s average was lurking around .250 and he was a mess at the plate. The only pitches he was hitting hard were fastballs thigh-high, middle in. He was getting beat by heaters up or in and was lunging hard onto his front foot chasing breaking balls. As Brooklyn made a late dash to the playoffs, Davis appeared to relax. In his final 58 AB, he hit .310/.394/.379 with 8 BB and 12 SO. concluding as
Dr. Pangloss Says: If it all comes together Davis could be a solid to above average regular at first or right.
On the Flipside: Davis had a concerning professional debut. Whether he was dealing with nagging injury or merely fighting himself mentally, his talent did not make the impact it should have. The good news is that no one makes a career out of the New York Penn League.
Projected 2009 Start: St. Lucie. Davis will take on the pitcher-friendly FSL.

also daniel murphy is the best firstbase prospect for the mets.

I think Murphy will end up at 2B. Evans I would have at 1B. Unless you get rid of Church and leave Murphy or Evans in the Outfield. F-Mart if going to be in one of the corner spots next season as well. Evans is projected to have more power then Murphy.

Murphy will not be a 2nd baseman (at least not as a regular).
Everyone that has seen him play 2b has said he is below average.
Either he'll be a dave magadan/kevin Youkilis type 1b, or a lf, or a utility guy (but I hope not).

Wow, watching the 30 In 30 and they already dont have all the info. They are not being thrown 80 pitches. They are using a machine to do that. I know its a minor detail but little things bother me.

Is Aaron Heilman really battling for the 5th spot in the Cubs starting rotation? I hope he makes it, so the Mets could light him up.
Also, do the Mets still have Endy?

Heilman is technically in competition for the 5th starter's spot with the Cubs, but everything said so far seems to indicate that the Cubs' own farm system product Sean Marshall has the upperhand unless Heilman has an amazing spring and pitches out of his mind. That said, with Harden definitely needing extra time off during the year, Zambrano likely going to need a few games off given recent trends and the question of mark of whether Dempster will make it through the whole season after the last one being his first full one back as a starter after years of relieving, Heilman will definitely get his chances to have some starts.

Or, how about we blame him being a 1 1/2 pitch pitcher. His bread and butter is his change up. He has a decent fastball that tails, but is made more effective because of his change up. Plus he can fall into trouble when his location falters. How many times did he get into a jam, or make one worse by coming into an inning and walking guys, then leaving one up in the zone too much and serving up a cookie. I'm glad he's gone. If he finds success somewhere else, good for him. He wasn't going to do it here.
Plus I really got sick of that puss of his walking off the mound after blowing it.

The rotation has to be scaring you guys a little bit.
Santana's had some arm issues, that could linger...Pelfrey hurt...Maine doesn't look good. The 5th starter competition is a joke.
I'm gunna get this out of the way right now..
This is for you KC..
I have seen Towlie lurking around a little these past few weeks..
I do not wanna hear shit from him this whole season.
I do not care if the Mets are 30 games up.
He talked so much shit the whole year, then when they collapsed, he was nowhere to be seen.
He killed KC all year, then Hides when it was time to face the music.
Something that most of the Mets fans here did not do.
Damn, I missed this post.
I guarantee you if the Phillies had gone out in the first round again, though, he'd of been all over here just killing me.
The odd thing is, I would have went fairly easy...but I can't blame him. In addition to the Mets debacle, if I remember correctly, he's also a Cowboys fan.

I like our rotation, too early to be scared.
I'm more concerned with our offense to be honest. 2B is a disaster and they did nothing to address the fact that the second half of Delgado's season may have been a complete fluke. Also, we're putting a lot of faith in Murphy, who I like, but is still unproven.

Maine doesnt bother me. He is coming off surgery. Plus, last season spring training he was lights out. Everyone figured he was due for a huge year. It didn't happen. So, I think Maine needs time. He's also working on a curveball, a pitch Peterson had him get rid of. The curve will help his fastball, as it give the hitters another pitch to think about which could mean more innings pitched.

The back end of the pitching staff is really weak and the lack of depth is scary. I am pessimistic about Maine, and the 5th starter spot has the potential to be a disaster. I guess not many teams in baseball have an absolutely solid 1-5 (or 1-4), but I feel if we lose any of our top 3 for an extended period of time the season could be a waste.
That being said, who the hell knows what will happen? Random young pitcher could come up and give us the depth we need.

According to New York Newsday, the Mets have contacted Gary Sheffield directly and he could sign with the club as soon as Friday night.
The Mets are reportedly his first choice, behind the Reds and Phillies. Sheffield, who's sitting on 499 career home runs, would give Citi Field its first milestone. He would probably platoon with Ryan Church in right field and could sneak additional at-bats if young left-fielder Daniel Murphy struggles out of the gate. Sheffield should only cost the Mets the league minimum, $400,000. Apr. 3 - 11:54 am et

Nice move by Marlon Anderson tonight to break up the double play. I didnt realize Felciano was the only lefty in the bullpen anymore...perhaps they need to make some moves o get another one.
I just watched the MLB Network look back at Shea Stadium.
Funny...they conveniently end the special with the 2006 Division clincher, then make a vague comment about how 2006 didn't turn out how they thought it would.
They COMPLETELY neglect 2007 and 2008, and make no mention of the final game at Shea.
As I baseball fan, I was disappointed. My favorite memories of Shea were Carlos Beltran in Game 7, Tom Glavine's 1st inning on the last day of the season against the Marlins in 2007, and Ollie Perez's 8000 walks in the 5th inning of the last game of the season last year.

Because he's washed up, can barely run, can barely field, and his only value at this point is as a pinch-hitter against lefties.
If the Mets signed him to supplant Murphy in LF, they're nuts. He's a bench player at best at this point.

so if you're gonna pay it anyway, why not go with the option of actually getting something in return for that money, however little it may be, its still better than zero which is what is gonna happen now that he's a met

It's very weird. Looks like they are in Detroit or something.

Because he's washed up, can barely run, can barely field, and his only value at this point is as a pinch-hitter against lefties.
If the Mets signed him to supplant Murphy in LF, they're nuts. He's a bench player at best at this point.
dont you have your own thread?

I've heard the opposite, that Yankee Stadium is a bit of a disappointment. It's got no panache. They basically just rebuilt the old place and jacked up the prices.
And so what if there were papers flying about? It was quite the blustery day out there.

well at least the mets win something
Mets enter with great history in openers
Santana starts for franchise with best Opening Day record (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090402&content_id=4114788&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym)

I've heard first hand from some people that went up already that Yankee Stadium is pretty disappointing (at least for the price), and that the concourse has something of a Mall feel to it which really takes away from the ambience of being at a baseball game.
The sight lines are a bit better, and the upkeep is better, but all in all, there's absolutely no character to it.
Have not heard much on Citi Field yet. It looks interesting from the TV shots I've seen, but I don't know anyone who's been yet.

Feels like a last year game. Santana pitches well, can't get a few extra runs of support, turn it over to the bullpen with a 1 run lead. But this is a new bullpen so it should be a different story.

I hope so.
Sean Green did his job, Putz now.
and K-rod does too.
2-1, solid pitching game.
