Hey Doc,

Is there a medical or scientific reason for cravings? Right now I'd punch my mother in the face for a good piece of dark chocolate. Do we crave sweets because our bodies are telling us we need sugar, or does the thought just pop into our head?

Thanks again,

Tennessee G

I've always heard that's the case with the bizarre cravings that pregnant women get. Their bodies know that certain combinations of food will contain things that their bodies are in need of, but don't necessarily go together.

There are the cravings of a pregnant woman...sometimes women are driven to eating the craziest things, including clay and cornstarch. These are felt to arise from a mineral deficiency, and the general term is "PICA".

What you're talking about is a different thing altogether, in my opinion. Chocolate is about more than just sugar...if you really just craved sugar, why not eat a sugar cube? Chocolate is about pleasure and endorphins. Endorphins are morphine-like substances that hit the pleasure receptors in the brain. There are also cannabis-like molecules in our brains that trigger receptors that make us hungry (hence "the munchies"). The cannabis-like molecules trigger your hunger, you eat chocolate and release endorphins and your brain goes into a pleasurable state without you ever having to go to the "bad" part of town to score. Do this enough times in your life and your body becomes attached to the feeling. This results in the body requesting certain stimuli from you to make it happy, and a "craving" results.

Also, It's really not about sugar...there was a study once that pitted high fat chocolates against high sugar chocolates and the high fat ones won out every single time. We apparently crave fat more than we do sugar, at least in our sweets, which is probably because fat is a more efficient storage vehicle for energy than sugar is.

Carbohydrate craving stems from the fact that carbs generate a quick burst of energy and are readily burned by the body. They don't exist in our environment in great quantities (I'm talking about our NATURAL environment...look around you and see if there are any high starch or sugary foods growing on a plant nearby) so we developed a very efficient system for storing them if we came across them in the wild. We convert them to FAT.

Our high carb American diet is essentially responsible for our national obesity problem. but that's another topic.

I can only assume this craving is to compliment the peanut butter coming out of your ass (http://ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77410).
