Posting this on Ronfez and Wackbag. Just curious if anyone else had the same problems I've been having with AVG Free updating and going into a restart loop on comps running AVG Free. I found it odd that it happened on 3 machines running XP, same problem, and all my Vista machines run AVG Free just fine. I just typed out everything on Wackbag so I'll just paste my post here:
It seems that my bassist's computer, my mother's computer and my grandmother's computer, all of which run XP, all have had an error with AVG Free for over a week now. Just wondering if anyone else has had this error and possibly fixed it or just abandoned AVG like I did.
The error starts with the AVG tray icon displaying the exclamation point, which means there's something up. So when I update the program, it asks for a restart. Problem is, it just starts to ask for this update after every restart and if you agree, you'd just end up in a restart loop. This is ONLY on XP machines I set up for people, my Vista desktop, Vista laptop, my buddy's Vista laptop and my other buddy's Vista laptop and desktop all work with AVG just fine.
I did an EXTREMELY brief search about the problem and found what you usually do: Forums with others asking about the same problem you're having with no solutions posted.
So I just switched all 3 machines to Avast and will be done with it. Did I miss something with the AVG problem?

I've had the update problem with AVG in the past. I just reinstall it and everything works fine.

Ya know, after 3 machines didn't update properly and after the many, multiple little hiccups AVG always seems to have every few weeks it was just time to try another free one.
Fucking program wouldn't even uninstall off 2 of the machines. I had to go to AVG's website and download thier removal tool to get the program off the comps.

AVG has had enough fuck ups lately -- including marking a vital Windows system file as a virus, and deleting it, leading to the system being completely unable to boot -- for me to stop using it, and to stop recommending it. I'd go with Avast now.

No problems at all and I update daily on a XP machine, and two Vista 64 machines.
I had to uninstall AVG from my laptop a few months ago because it was forever telling me it couldn't find some file. I installed avast! and haven't had a problem yet. It too is free once you register it.

Ran into the same problem on a client's computer, and in my case it also screwed up Outlook Express. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It was OK until I updated, then it went kablooey again.
I pulled it and switched to Avast. I use Avast on my personal systems and don't ever recall having a problem.
***And this happened Friday, so it must have been an update sometime this week - don't know how many times the client logged onto their system this week.

This is common for AVG (7&8), and their support team basically could care less. There are workaround, but I said F it and went to Avast instead. I must say that the program works much better than AVG, performance and detection-wise.

Ive heard of problems with 8.0
But 7.5 is considered flawless.
Which version are you having problems with?
Avast uses tons of system resources.

it was 8.0. After ignoring the update for a few weeks it was really pushing the update so I got it for all 3 comps. And to their credit, besides the normal problems I got used to with AVG it worked up until now.

I've been having the same problems on my home and work computers, so I'm actually uninstalling right now to see if it works.
I also had issues with AVG running all the time, even after telling it not to it would keep running, it was fucking annoying and made the computer run extremely slow since it was scanning every file.
I just said fuck it and let my firewall take care of it on that level, was just a back up anyways.

try Avira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/). it's free, and i've been using it for years without any infestations.

Try Revo Uninstaller Free (http://www.download.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html). I use it anytime I'm uninstalling programs, because it does a much better job than Windows built in uninstaller does. I also used it successfully to get rid of AVG.
EDIT. I read it as "How to dump AVG". Never mind. But try Revo anyway for future use.

AvG 7.5 was really solid but once they moved to 8.x they added a bunch of crap to it and it comes off a lot more like bloatware. I installed Nod32 and I've had nary an issue since. It's not free but if you look in the right places it can be had for free...
