LOS ANGELES – James Whitmore, the many-faceted character actor who delivered strong performances in movies, television and especially the theater with his popular one-man shows about Harry Truman, Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt, died Friday, his son said. He was 87.
The Emmy- and Tony-winning actor was diagnosed with lung cancer the week before Thanksgiving and died Friday afternoon at his Malibu home, Steve Whitmore said.

I was just checking IMDB. I had no idea he was the President of the Ape Assembly in the original Planet of the Apes.

RIP, James Whitmore - a great actor you were.
I'm glad that you didn't shoot the manager of the Food Way before departing.

I believe the first time i had ever seen Mr. Whitmore was on the twilight zone, he played the colony leader who did not want to comeback to Earth from Mars because he was going to lose his people. Great Actor and even those his demanor seemed the opposite of the characters he played, he was a very underated pyschopath; I mean that in the ut most respect.

I saw James Whitmore perform as Harry Truman in a one man show "Gim em Hell Harry" - He was amazing.
I believe they made a film of it in the 70's and he might even have got an Oscar nomination
