I saw this question on ESPN.com and debated to myself for a good half hour. I don't know if it shows how crazy I am so I wanted to ask the people.
Which would you rather have?
$5,000

I bet the fine print would say *national league championship* but I'd be too giddy and sign before seeing it and they'd lose in the World Series.
The only way I could justify taking the $ is because the Mets are actually contending for a championship (sorta) these days so I might take my chances.
But I'd spend the 5 g's on METS TICKETS AND CLOTHES AND BULLSHIT ANYWAY!!!

I think they have treated their fans a little to poorly over the past decade that you would have a right to say fuck them.
I think baseball has more of an emotional tie to it anyway. I get wound up 162 games a year plus playoffs. If I knew they were gonna win, I could shit talk to every mother fucker I see and then shove it in their dumb faces for ever doubting me.
I would have to take the money to pay off my sports debts
That's actually a fantastic point. But again, I'd probably take the new $ and wager on the Mets and lose it anyway. Actually I don't wager on them but I'd find a way to lose it.

What's 7 to 8 minutes of passion against a lifetime of fandom?
Ritalin
02-06-2009, 10:11 AM
The money, of course.
The team, the players, the trainer, the beer vendor, the doctor, every single person involved with your favorite team views it as a business and will take every dollar you have to stick in their pockets.
Sorry to be so cynical, but I just read an article about my beloved Bears, and they're feeling all self congratulatory because they DIDN'T raise ticket prices. It doesn't really matter to me because I don't buy any tickets, but still, the idea in this day and age that the price will remain the same is a big deal to those assholes.

I understand this argument.
But my perspective is that I don't really care about what the team gives back to me or takes from me even. The shared collective experience I've had with my brother, cousin, friends, other fans, the first time my father took me to a game, my mother watching every game, the pain and joy I feel from every game is the experience for me. The height of which would be to win a championship.
The money would pay some of my credit card debt. I'd still be in debt so its like the money never even existed anyway.

Maybe it isn't fair, since I have seen the Yankees, Giants, and Islanders win many championships. But, I would take a metro-card.
The players all have a price they put on a championship. If they are offered a lower contract at a team that has a better chance of winning the championship, they have to choose, money or a real shot at winning.
It is fun to watch, but I can't be too concerned with which bunch of overpaid men win a game.
