View Full Version : What Artists Do You Regret Never Seeing?
paulisded
02-05-2009, 06:34 PM
To go along with WMT's thread about the acts you've seen the most, let's list those you missed out on. The idea isn't to list those that you could not possibly see due to your age (Beatles, Hendrix, etc.) but artists that would have been possible for you to see but for whatever reason never did.
Here's mine:
1. The Clash
2. The Smiths
3. Minutemen
4. Mission of Burma
5. Whiskeytown
6. Uncle Tupelo
7. Lemonheads
8. Rocket From the Crypt
9. Guided By Voices
10. Tom Waits
11. Lou Reed
12. Cramps
13. Pavement
14. Superchunk
15. Talking Heads

Alice In Chains
John Lee Hooker. Every time he came around it wasn't convenient, and my buddies and I would always joke that we really had to make an effort the next time because he'd be dead soon.
Sure enough, he died before I ever got the chance to see him live.
There are others, but he tops the list.

I had a chance to go see The Pixies on what would be their last tour (at least before the reunion tour a couple of years ago), but I didn't go for reasons I can't remember right now. That's always pissed me off.

I had my shots too as someone else stated, but the timing never worked out and I was still in high school so road trips weren't as easy.
Outside of that, probably Crankcase again!?
I've been to a LOT of concerts bc my pops is an entertainment editor for a local paper in PA. Believe it or not, we got vip treatment for shows up and down the east coast, including Live, NIN, David Bowie, The The, Counting Crows, Ozzie, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, La La Palooza I / II / II, WDRE Edge Fests (before it went belly up), GnR, Pink Floyd at Yankee Stadium, The Stones all over the fucking place and so many others.
Just thought of another one, Living Colour. I would have LOVED to see them at CBGB's but was way too young at the time.

Oooo, one more. Jeff Buckley. Man I wish he was a better swimmer. Yep, my taste is all over the place, but it would have been awesome to catch these few on top of what I've already seen (over 250 concerts, so don't ask why my hearing is so bad).

You have to see him. He still tours. Go see him. He was on my list of those to see before he dies, and it's a great show. The audience was the best--a mix of hippie white folks and older black folks.

More then anything I regret not PAYING ATTENTION TO JEFF BUCKLEY.
He opened for Julianna Hatfield at the Academy Nyc and I was there, but paid him no mind... as I was 14 and wanted to hate men.
Most of my big regrets are reggae/ska acts that are done.

Mr Bungle, Sublime, and Dead Kennedys. I was regretting never getting to see Rage Against the Machine, until 2006 when the Rock the Bells tour came to NYC and it rock my mother fucking ass to Russia. My friend actual had a seizure during Wu-Tang, it was amazing.
I regret not seeing the Stones in the 70's with Mick Taylor. I've seen the current incarnation with Ron Wood, but it's not the same.

they were playing live when i was 14 and I was already a seasoned club-goer but I didn't head out to any shows because I "knew" they would stay popular and play out more.
a few weeks later Andrew Wood was dead. such a waste of creative light... but it sparked a strange revolution in the Seattle music scene. so i guess he got his legacy after all...

I saw Faith No More when REALLY young and for some unknow STUPID reason they had it in this old theater they just renovated. It was a huge W-B gem and pride source only to book THIS concert and we actually had to exacuate bc the mosh pit (think late 80's) collapsed the fucking floor and it was almost a 30 foot drop to the basement! It was awesome and they roped it off (believe it or not) and continued the show bc Patton and the band were so proud. The show was awesome as far as a young kid happy to be allowed to see a pretty heavy band with friends all set up by my pop's pull ALONE! My dad thought it was hilarious, my mother was sooo fucking embarassed with the other parents. Seriously, my Dad didn't give a fuck and loved it. I think I was 12 or 13.

Yea, Mike Patton is in and out of bands constantly. I really like the CD he did with The Dillinger Escape Plan "Irony is a Dead Scene". I really wanted to Mr.Bungle though because that band was TIGHT! They wrote such ridiculous music its almost psychotic to think of the time spent perfecting the crazy cartoon music. Pattons vocals in Mr.Bungle were his best work anyway, he used a lot of different voices when he sang their songs and I dig that. Now hes just a voice actor for video games and movies.

"trying not to think about it" is a tribute to jeffy.
Ryan Adams
He opened for Oasis at a show I saw around Christmas.
He was ok, but he talked endlessly on stage about complete nonsense, and it was so bad, that it got to the point where the audience (who was already drunk and belligerent, because it was an Oasis show), started to turn on him.

yeah, same here. I saw the Lemondheads play in my college in '97 or '98, at least I think they were calling themselves the Lemonheads. I got to see Pavement booed off the stage at Lollapalooza, bizarrely, and I saw Superchunk play the second stage at a Lollapolooza, I don't think it was the same one.
Mine are pretty typical
Nirvana, Soundgarden, Sublime. I kinda wish I had seen L7, we got to a lollapalooza late and missed them and Green day (saw green day later on, though).

He's on tour right now, and is playing in NYC at the Beacon on Feb. 21st. Plus, he's playing with Buddy Guy, who is well worth going to see all on his own.
Does seeing Nirvana at Saturday Night Live count?
Also, I saw Alice in Chains basically get booed off the stage in Philly when they opened for Van Halen in 92 or 93.
My regret list includes the Grateful Dead with Garcia, Guns & Roses, and Led Zeppelin. I almost made the trip to England last year, but figured they'd be doing a US tour. Oops. I haven't seen U2 yet, but I'll try to fix that the next time they go out.

George Carlin! He performed right in my town, a mile away a couple of years ago and I didn't go. I'm so mad at myself now.
Also:
The Pixies
Alice in Chains (they opened for Iggy Pop once but I got there late and missed them. Arggh!)
The Damned
XTC
Another one I haven't seen yet is John Hiatt. He plays around here all the time so I always think "I'll catch him next time." I don't want to add him to my list of regrets so next time he plays I'm going.
