Today I was walking down the street in nyc and I foind $40 on the ground. I looked around to see who could have dropped it and no one was around so I pocketed it. I told my wife and said we should donate it, but she said I should report it to the police station. I kinda agree, this is not my money and whatever I do with it will be dishonest. Anyone ever report lost money? What do I do?

All the drop-outs on this board would probably just pocket the money.

Law of averages catch things up, so keep it and pretend you got that card in Monopoly. It's only 40 bucks too, I don't think anyone is going to miss their meds bc of it. Oh and consider it a reverse tax for living on Staten Island with the Hippo twins. I'm one to believe you're still owed a lot more.

I'm pretty sure that if you walked into a NYC police station to report $40.00 you found on the street they would be calling cops down from other floors to laugh at you.

You should come to the next bar night we have and buy a round for your best buddies.

Maybe your good karma led you to a spot in the universe where you would find this money as some sort of small cosmic reward and by turning the money in you are actually spiting Cosmic Law.
You don't want to spite Cosmic Law, do you?

Compared to bad karma it's nothing. I don't know. I'm on the fence. I see both sides here. I'll look it up. There may even be a minimum for how much you can report

Yes.
If it will make you feel better, by all means do it, but what are the odds someone would report losing exactly 40 dollars and know exactly where they lost it?

if you lost $40 would you go to the police looking for it? sure, if it was in a wallet, but other than that it would be silly. if it makes you feel better, the donating it somewhere option is much more productive, in my opinion.

I have found money on the street, open game unless it is obvious who dropped it.
I have watched people drop money unaware and have pointed it out to them without getting anywhere near it.
I have also seen a person making change at a convenience store and recounting the bills while sliding some on the floor and slipping then around with his shoe. Fucking thief got pissed when I said "Here's your change"
If you think you know who it belongs to return it, if there is no way of knowing than it is open game, especially cash.

Somewhere in this situation is a deep moral question, that is outweighed by impraticallity, which may not even be a word.

I am a big believer in Karma, my conscious would be clean and still have good Karma if I donated the money that I found.
Donate it to buy calling cards for our veterans, or to the the United Way. A cause that helps others is great for Karma.

Ok. I'm a buddhist so I think about karma a lot and I think in the end donating still leads to bad karma because I am still spending the money. This is a philosophical question. I'd love to hear your response.

As a fellow follower of Buddhism I would add that considering the difficulty in finding the honest person missing the money that the next best thing we can do is to donate it to a good cause that helps others. It is a balance between what is good and what may be nearly impossible. This would not give one negative Karma because of the complexity of the solution versus the donation leading to good. If it helps, throw in another 20 when you donate the money, then it is bonus points per se.
Edit to say: sometimes we have to consider the modern complexities in our solutions that are still within our practices.

Interesting point, however no matter how impractical if there is a way society deems we should fairly deal with these issues shouldn't we utilize it? And what form of buddhism?

Society is impractical and we often have to make adjustments on several levels to live and thrive in our society, thus the concept of trying to return the money in a fair way has many complexities and solutions. If we had to boil any religion that is celebrated in our society the basic principle is that of doing the right thing. Using this logic and applying it to our beliefs would dictate exactly the circumstances I stated in my prior post. And to add that legally you are not stealing the money plus you had already made the attempt to identify if anyone was around you that may of lost it. It is a touchy situation, but by using the found money for good purposes adds to your good Karma.
As for the form I follow, currently there is a group here in Houston called the Diamond Way which to my best interpretation is Tibetan Buddhism in a west world sense. I know there are variations but for now I continue the more traditional route. I began studying by buying books and seeking out knowledge easily 10 years ago.

Ha, you know I couldn't even find anything online about procedures of turning in lost money. I guess it would be a waste of time. I just think this opens up a bit of an ethical question, which is pretty interesting.

My wife is going to totally disagree with me not turning the money in. She has a really strong moral code, but I think in this situation it's just too impractical. Maybe I can buy off her morality with Sushi?

Just think of it as part of the economic stimulus package and either spend it or donate it to someone who will spend it.
I can't speak to the Buddhist angle on this but in the Western tradition the ethical thinking would go some thing like this:
Is there a way to find the rightful owner? Probably not in this case.
Is there a mechanism by which someone else can decide what to do with the $? In this case you are literally passing the buck(s) - there is no guarantee that the cops or anyone else will make a better moral decision than you and you would be actively giving them the temptation to do something wrong.
If you are in genuine need use the money yourself. If you're not either give it to someone (or organization) who is. Or spend it with some vendor who is hurting.
Probably the best thing to do is buy Ronnie B. some cigars.
