I have been talking movies a lot lately with people at work or friends and it never fails that somebody will say something along the lines of, "You know what movie I really like? Shawshank Redemption." Then of course, everyone else around them will agree with such enthusiasm that they found a friend with similar movie taste!
I propose that you are no longer allowed to bring up Shawshank Redemption when talking about great films. Yes, it was a great movie. Everybody loves it. It's probably the most widely enjoyed movie out there. There's no need to bring it up! You're not breaking any new ground or turning any heads by saying you love it! Stop acting like you discovered this great film that everyone else just has to see!
It's just been bugging me lately. That is all.

It's odd, really.
I've never met anyone who dislikes the film.
Why is it so fucking popular?!

I'm surprised people in Mississippi like a movie with Morgan Freeman. Well, he is playing a convict so I guess they would.
It's odd, really.
I've never met anyone who dislikes the film.
Why is it so fucking popular?!
Two reasons:
1. Universal themes.
2. Timeless story.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
Universal theme that everyone identifies with.
Zero Oscars, lost to Forrest Gump. Figure that out.

I agree. Only an asshole would start a thread about how good The Shawshank Redemption is. (http://ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=76035&highlight=shawshank)

What I remember about this movie was that it was BORING!! and it had Morgan Freeman the guy from Sesame Street. I don't think I watched the whole movie. Maybe I'll give it another try and see what the big deal about it is.
Another movie that I didn't get was Glory. Maybe I'll try and check it out again.

Based upon that rationale, we should stop discussing the films such as Godfather I and II, Jaws, Star Wars, Casablanca, etc., as great films.
You can only bring up little known and enjoyed films as great films.

Morgan Freeman was from The Electric Company, not Sesame Street.

I guess that is what would happen if you took the wrong pill in the "Matrix". You wake up in a house with talking furniture and Morpheus dressed like a jackass.

I would say that Shawshank is more widely loved percentage wise than those. If you don't like mob movies, you won't be into the Godfathers. If you don't like sci-fi, you won't be into Star Wars. If you don't like shark movies in Amity, you won't be into Jaws.

The deal with "Shawshank" was that it wasn't a big hit or big winner of oscars so it never got the "over rated" tag to it. Most people think its a little movie they discovered and loved because when it came out it didn't get the big push.
"Godfather" is a better movie than "Shawshank" but it was a huge hit and won all the oscars so everyone knows that its a great film...a lot of people weren't expecting it with "Shawshank".
Even the fact that its always number1 on imdb is something not a lot of regular folks would pay attention to, and i think the bliss of the love of the film is what annoys coach mac
either way, the film doesn't have enough edge to it for me to think its one of the best...but thats just me

i saw shawshank for the first time about 2 years ago. there was no way it could live up to the hype. it was mediocre and i don't get everyone throwing it at the top of their best movies ever list.

it was a movie that going into I was told was going to be great and much to my surprise it actually was. I want to cry every time I watch the ending it makes everything in the world feel good for a little while
So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

Fantastic movie on every level.
It's a huge ensemble film & every single role was perfectly cast. It covers so much ground. There's an amazing amount of plot & story to that film. It really splinters off.
After it was over, I walked to the car just KNOWING that I just saw a classic.

The only two options should be "I like it", and "I've never seen it".
Wow, that is some great talking out of your ass.
