So,

I have been recording some podcasts with different software.

Using Garage Band, I can do it pretty easily. But, I cannot just cue up any sound clip and have the software record it unless I make it a separate track in Garage Band. This is the problem.

I currently only have one computer. So one machine for recording and another for media is kind of out of the question. So, here's my question:

Using Audacity (which I have used a lot in the past and only a little now) is it possible to record from both the line-in (or firewire/usb mixer) and from separate software simultaneously??

I want to record mics from the mixer and sounds from a different audio playing program.

Any ideas? Do I need to resurrect my other old (dell or g3 pismo) laptop to use for one of the two functions? Is it easier than I think it is?

I'm not sure if you can use Audacity to do this? I am 99% positive that you would be able to do this really easily with Total Recorder.

good luck.

Fandick records with something and runs his sounds/clips through his windows media player.

I don't know if he is recording it with audacity but there is a way to play sounds and record simultaneously. For me, I have to do a weird loop back through my mixer and all kinds of dumb shit. Good luck. Where can I hear your brilliant podcasting?

My shitty site is set up through podomatic.com. I plan on linking it as soon as I post a show.

It's called the Slow Burn Show...... I know lame but, it made me think of the B Sharps.

It has been a little while since I have used Audacity, but can't you set it to "what You Hear" or essentially record the system sound without specifying a source?

You would have to test it, but I assume it would record whatever would be playing through your system speakers regardless of what is producing the sound.

Again, it has been a while so don't hold me to it 100%.

***And it might only be available on desktops for some reason. I remember the same setting not being available when installed on a laptop.
