View Full Version : Christian Bale Goes Nuts

From TMZ (http://www.tmz.com/2009/02/02/bale-went-ballistic/):
You may remember that Christian Bale went nuts on the set of "Terminator Salvation" a few months back, threatening to stop production and beat some serious ass.
The incident was audiotaped, and it's amazing. It happened on the set after a director of photography accidentally ruined a scene by walking onto the set. Bale lost it, screaming, yelling and threatening to quit if the bosses didn't fire the dude.
Film execs sent the tape to the insurance company that insured the film in case Bale bailed.
Audio (http://www.aolcdn.com/tmz_audio/020209_christianbale.mp3)
I love hearing people lose their minds. The Chris Berman videos were some of my favorites, but this audio is fucking awesome.
I enjoy how Christian Bale goes through about a million different accents through the tirade.

Good for Christian Bale.
What kind of shitty director lets people stumble onto the set during a shoot.
This post is brought to you by my obscene McG hatred.

did you notice that Bale called him "McG" in that clip? I would think he would go by a real name when being a professional filmmaker. I think it would be embarrassing as an actor to have to take direction from someone named "McG"

I think it would be embarassing to be in a movie with McG attached to the title, period.
Since the people releasing the tape didn't have the integrity to release information about the kind of scene being filmed nor did they bother elaborating what the DP was saying, I am not going to pass any judgment.
If it were a scene heavily coordinated with stunts and explosives which put massive delays to the end of my work day while putting me in prolonged danger, I'd probably be furious, too.
Warner Bros hired Christian Bale. If they want to fire him, they should fire him. I cannot see this leaked tape as working in the studio's favor. While it drums up publicity for Terminator 4, it also makes Bale look bad to the typical TMZ-fan who loves talking massive amounts of crap about celebrities but for some reason hates when a celebrity is seen speaking the same way about fans or other film-making professionals.
Everyone who downloads a clip with the title, "Christian Bale Goes Nuts", listens to the rant, then gets upset at Bale about what he said is actively trying to anger his or herself.
I'll give Bale credit for telling the DP off to his face, unlike other people (read: me) who hide behind gossip and send tapes (supposedly internal corporate documents) to TMZ.
Meanwhile, valuable corporate and governmental secrets will never get this kind of publicity.
Also, what kind of below average Director of Photography does a person have to be not to understand where and when a scene is blocked for filming?
Besides... Ron, Fez, Opie and Anthony scream at their crew. If I really hated that kind of thing, I probably wouldn't be here.

if it was the DP that McG used for his "Charlie's Angels" movies than Bale has a right to be pissed. From a visual stand-point, i think the Charlie's Angels movie may be the ugliest films ever shot. I blame it for starting the overly glossy polished look that a lot of comedies have today. It has ruined so many comedies that had the potential to work but meanwhile instead you are just looking at a way too overshot reaction shot of the actor's face and all chances of relating to the comedy is lost

There was double penetration in Charlie's Angels?
Why not just shoot a new DP scene?

i looked up the DP of "Terminator Salvation" and he really doesn't seem to have experience with big budget action films

Bale is 100% right to scream his head off at this guy, who apparently makes a habit of walking into scenes. Bale shouldn't have to do this, the director should already have done it, which is maybe why the frustration levels are so high.
Atleast hes a dude who cares about what he's doing.
I "read" that this wasn't just crew he flipped on, it was The Director of Photography.

How great were the previous three that this one would ruin the legacy of those films? The first movie is the story of a man from the future sent back to the 80s by John Conner for the purpose of having sex with and protecting Connor's mom from a nearly indestructible android.
I think there is a great scene that needs to be made where John briefs Kyle Reese.
John: Private Reese, I need you to go back to the 1980s where you will wage a nearly impossible battle with one indestructible android.
Kyle: Wait. You mean the things that are surrounding this compound? We usually destroy about 20 of these an hour. Why would it be so difficult to kill just one of them in the 1980s?
John: Yeah, I think it has something to do with timing. The Terminator will arrive before you and is able to arm himself better than you.
Kyle: Couldn't I go to the 1980s safely before the Terminator? Actually... If you have the ability to send me back in time, wouldn't be more practical to destroy Technet and Cyberdyne instead?
John: Look... I didn't want to come out and say this, but you are actually my father. You are going to get to have sex with my mom and then die.
Kyle: If the Terminators can go back and kill your mom, couldn't they easily go back and kill me during my infancy?
John: No. Apparently, that is impossible.
I love the Terminator, but what a convoluted bunch of rubbish...

It's unprofessional if you work in an office, but not in a creative venue. And actually if you were one of a select few people working on some office project worth several hundred million dollars, and you messed up, you actually might get yelled at like this.

I am so torn. I'd normally agree with this post because while, it's understandable why he'd become so infuriated in the moment, his reaction was still unprofessional.
This just demonstrates how we put Hollywood actors on a pedestal. Everyone has to cater too them on set, so they can focus, get their award and then reap the monetary benefits by demanding 20million a picture.
But because I am biased, I'll excuse Mr. Bales behavior because his yelling and cursing oddly turns me on and just makes him that much hotter.
P.S. I hate TMZ.

I dunno, I find it hard to be sympathetic with Bale's complaint about the artistic merit of the shot being ruined when he's starring in yet another Terminator sequel made by hack-meister "McG".

Again, we don't know the circumstances of the shot, so is his yelling justified? It's not like a Twilight Zone The Movie fuck up, or could have someone been hurt?
And I've worked in corporate sales for ten years. I recall one blow up at a meeting much like Bales. The next day that guy was gone. If also seen people let go for blowing up at after work parties. Unprofessional is easy to spot and easy to fix - you get rid of the asshole.

The studio didn't release it. When Bale threatened to quit, they had to notify the insurance company and provided them a copy of the tape. Someone at the insurance company leaked it.
Having a full-scale temper tantrum in front of co-workers? Threatening to beat the shit out of someone in the workplace? Threatening to get someone fired? In the real world this guy would be fired on the spot for cause, and rightly so.
I'll bet the DP was smaller than him too. I wonder if he would mouth off to some beefy Teamster like that.

I get all the context I need- DP is fucking around in the actors eye line, has done it multiple times, McG is not interested or capable of handling the problem. Bale blows up because if this movie is a huge turd, and totally flops he is going to be the one who suddenly becomes less attractive to hire, not the DP.

That does make sense: unless he's just an ass like that all the time, it's pretty clear that this whole production must be a clusterfuck and he knows this is going to end up being a stinkbomb.
He does sound like an ass, and if that's how he was the whole time, fuck him. But I'd like to know more about how things had been going previously.

i want Terminator Salvation to be a good movie, i really do. And its good that Christian Bale gives a fuck about his performance. Its just that when the directors only movies are the Charlie's Angels movies and "We are Marshalls" (which i never saw) its hard to have faith
christ, i can't believe im saying this, but i'd have more faith if Bret Ratner was directing it. Yes, i said Bret Ratner
