My wife was busy with other things this afternoon so I volunteered to vacuum the house. She's not and idiot so she said "Go ahead but I usually dust first".

There in lies my question. I think the vacuum will only trap so much of what it kicks up and dusting should be done second after the dust settles. She was taught by her mother (who is a shitty house keeper) to dust first. That way the dust falls to the floor before vacuuming.

What do you prefer?

i like to "dust" things onto the floor and then vacuum them up.
but i am also kind of a shitty housekeeper.

You clean starting from top to bottom. Ceiling fans and overhead light fixtures get dusted first, then work your way down, then vacuum.

Use some lysol spray cleaner and dust first.

Then you do the vacuuming.

Side note - you should simply offer to do these things on a more regular basis out of love for your wife. Not just because she has some other things to do.

I vacuum first, even though I have a really good vacuum it can still stir up the carpet fibers which then settle on the things you just dusted.

Hard wood or some other laminate flooring is the way to go. This is not the 70's, tear up that outdatted shag carpeting sir. If you really desire the look and feel of carpeting, invest in some area rug, door mat or hallway runner.
