I probably watch more football than anyone but just because I'm a sports junkie. People don't even like it because of the sports of it, they like it because of the event that Sunday's and the Super Bowl are. And it doesn't take that much effort to follow it.
Baseball, like most things in life, rewards you the more you put into it. I'll watch or listen to every Met game this year. If they win, its that much more rewarding because of how invested I am into it. The same for my brother and mother and various friends.

Baseball, baseball, baseball! I've loved it since I was a little kid playing the game, and I'll still follow it ever season (and offseason). Piuki gets pissed because she wants to watch the NFL channel and all of the past Superbowls and I'm like, "what are they doing on MLB Network?" Baseball is year round.

Annie Savoy: I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring... which makes it like sex.

It's tough. Football is my favorite sport, but baseball is a close second. However, the NFL is only 16 games a year vs. 162 for baseball.
Any sport, if it is the only one still in existence, would be rendered completely unaffordable to attend in person, so that can be ruled out.
I love soccer too, and there are plenty of different leagues, playing all year round, but the best are all in foreign countries.
Given the pro and college level, I'd have to take football over baseball.

Blame for this rise and fall has been pinned on the destructive NBA lockout which occurred right after the 1998 season. The lockout wiped out thirty-two games of the 1998-1999 season and caused fan apathy. Other blame has been put on the retirement of Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan and also on backlash against the new "hip-hop" culture of the league. Despite the fall in ratings, the NBA's regular season ratings average is only slightly lower than Major League Baseball's, and ratings for the finals continue to outdraw competing events that occur during the same month, golf's U.S. Open and the Stanley Cup Finals.
Slow down a little. Besides hockey will do what they always do. Start to get some momentum, lock the players out and fuck it all up

Just as someone stated almost every sport "works" every day, there is also strategy in every game. It seems some here put WAY too much weight on the strategy of a pitch count, positioning in the field and baserunning versus set plays, defensive lineups, cycles and other strategic concepts of other game. I'd venture to say the EASIEST game to manage IS BASEBALL, and hence everyone here identifies with it more easily. Then tie in the fact that it's usually the first sport kids got into for those here, the season in which it begins and you have all these outside factors clouding your judgement. Sorry Chris, it's not bc I just watched a hockey game I selected it, it's bc it's my favorite hands down.

In the NHL's defence on TV stuff, the NBA is talked about constantly on SportsCentre, the league has a TV contract with ESPN, and the NHL's only on national TV about once a week (NBC on Sunday afternoons and maybe two games a week on Versus). I think with that kind of small sample size in regards to TV, I have no doubt that the NBA would have a bigger TV rating.
But given those realities, its gotta look pretty good for the NHL that even with a dog poop TV contract, and 1 game a week on NBC, that its attendance figures are still there with the NBA don't you think?

Factor in that there are three local teams in the NYC area, and Philly not too far away, and your theory get crushed. For the NYC area to support three teams easily, one selling out every game, versus the Knicks and the Nets (worse issues than the devs with attendance) and you can clearly see NHL is more than holding it's own in the NYC market.

I didnt say they werent doing well, but this is a basketball city. if St John's was good, they would sell more tickets then the Rangers. The Knicks have been terrible for a long time and sell way more tickets then the Rangers.

The Rangers are doing way better over the years, even when not doing well. In fact, they're only in it right now bc of their goalie and Zherdev and their attendance is at 103.9% (standing room tix once sold out), and an average of 18,155.
The Knicks are coming out of the hell years with a lot of press and doing better, still they are at 96.8% and an average of 19,132. The Garden holds a few more people for basketball simply based on the setup allowing for more seating due to the size of the rink/court.
However, I'd put NYC down as a front running town, not a basketball town in the least. In fact, I truly believe they follow the team doing the best regardless of which one and or which sport. This holds especially true when half of said fans aren't even from this area originally.

In fact, the Knicks only sold out one year since 02-03 (04-05), supporting both my front runner AND nhl/nba nyc support theories since the Rangers sold out every year in question.
