So, we begin this anew. And a lot has changed in three months.

It's going to be a tough year. With as sponsor-driven as NASCAR is, a lot of teams have suffered and been forced to merge or change hands.

We'll start with the big change - He's now #14 on his car but #1 in your heart, Tony Stewart now has his own team, sponsored by Office Depot and Old Spice. He's teaming up with Ryan Newman. The #14 is for AJ Foyt. Cars will be provided by.. Hendrick Motorsports.

Smoke's crew chief is Darien Grubb. You may remember Darien as Chad Knaus' second-in-command who took over for Chad on his numerous suspensions.

The other big change is Mark Martin coming to HMS, ostensibly to be Dale Jr's tag-team partner and help level the social classes at HMS. Mark will run a full-time schedule and then they'll see for 2010.

The Captain of the Titanic is Martin Truex Jr. Martin is now on the disaster known as Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. His teammates are Juan Pablo Montoya (now in the Target car) and Aric Amirola. EGR is only running 3 teams this year.

Some other changes:

Menard goes from DEI to Yates
Scott Speed comes on board with Red Bull Racing
AJ Allmendinger from Red Bull to Richard Petty Motorsports
Casey Mears goes to RCR
Brad Kesolowski is running a part time schedule to get his feet wet.

(Since Truex is going to be the most courted Free Agent on this class, I'm not sure where the hell they are going to go with everyone having to reduce to 4 teams after this year. I'm thinking with the Economy, France may allow the teams to keep running 5)

Oh yeah. And some kid named Logano is in the #20.

The most notable drivers without a ride are Kyle Petty (who should just go and do TV.. he's so much better than most of the guys they have now), Dave Blaney, David Gilliland, and JJ Yeley.

Out of all of them, surprised Gilliland doesn't have a ride, but this just happened recently.

Also, in "cool news" - Kirk Shelmerdine bought some Toyotas from Bill Davis and is attempting to run a full schedule. GO KIRK!

truex will be back in the camping world east (formerly busch north) series with his DEI alumni steve park.

stewart has a tough road ahead of him, and i'm nervous now with him being an owner he has nobody to tell him to keep his mouth shut. should be fun to watch.

Wait, what?

Top 35 from last year have a guaranteed spot in Daytona. Then 8 more spots determined, 7 with the champ's provisional, which would go to Smoke first, Labonte 2nd, then Bill Elliott.

To reiterate - it's Daytona. With the draft and the Big One, it absolutely does not matter where you start. The shootout had about 15 lead changes? And that was a 75 lap race. The 500 is 3x longer, with 15 more cars involved.

The pole would mean something if one of the guys who didn't have a spot, like a Kirk Shelmerdine or Geoffrey Bodine got it. And even then, it's just getting them into the race, nothing more.

Poles that matter are at Bristol and other short tracks where you can get lapped in about 2 minutes. Not Daytona, where you can go from 25th to 2nd and back to 30th within a matter of 2 laps.

you missed my point a little there.....

everything at Daytona is bigger than the rest of the year, Its the first race of the year, you want to win everything you can to say look at what we did over the off season to come out looking strong! Anyone locked or not locked into the top 35 position can change after the Duels if they aren't locked into the front row. Much like Bill Elliott, he qualified 5th last Sunday and yesterday his transmission locked up resulting in a DNF in his Duel race throwing him back to 42nd or something starting spot. Others had the same fate, unlike Truex and Martin...they still are going to be starting on the front row, away from that hornets nest. I know they can be passed easily, but they don't have to pass when they are already up front.

So yes, it is a big deal to be on the front row or the pole at Daytona for the 500. All other qualifying session are now devalued by the new format of the Bud Shootout. Qualifying basically just helps you pick a great pit selection if you set the pole.

i'm thinking there will be a lot of wrecked cars today and the obligatory 50 minute red flag. the way they were sliding and bouncing around on thursday its going to be hard for them not to wreck when they go three wide on lap 3.

i want stewart to win this thing, and starting in a back-up car, forfeiting his 6th place starting spot, it will be fun to watch him come up through the feild. he'll crack the top ten in 15 laps.

Lately, I've been thinking about whether or not I still like NASCAR. When Dale Sr. was still around, not only did I like him, but I liked the sport. If he wasn't doing well, I still enjoyed the races. Since then, I've found that, if Dale Jr. is out of the running, I really lose interest. That got me to realize that I don't really like the sport itself. I watched bits and pieces of the 500 today. I haven't missed it in over 15 years. Seeing Jr. continue to dig himself into a hole, I just turned it off. I, PapaBear, am officially done with NASCAR. It was a nice ride, while it lasted.

Tenbatsuzen
02-15-2009, 06:29 PM
I'm in different about the whole Dale Jr. thing.

Kyle actually said it best... Dale was having a bad day and then made his bad day everyone else's bad day.

He was doing a shitload of awful stuff today. It's inexcusable to miss your pits TWICE.

Michael Waltrip seems to do well at Daytona in the rain.

I started doing that years ago. I keep telling my Dad, (whose been a NASCAR fan for over 30 years but is hating the sport now), that he should turn the radio on and watch the race on TV cause it actually makes it so much better.

they just describe the race so much better...

on a side note, it is funny how the people in the South hate the fact that NASCAR and television is catering to the "Newer" NASCAR fans out West and up North, but the North hates the fact that the FOX commentators cater to the Southern idiot rednecks.....

I just wish it was still like 2001 with the coverage.....it seemed so fresh and exciting each week....i miss that.

my issue with the coverage is they have to eplain everything every week like we don't know what drafting is, WE KNOW! i fucking hate DW too.

whether dale jr did it intentionally or not he should have sat like leffler did, no question about it. i can't stand the inconsistency and the fact NA$CAR makes up the rules as they go and feel the need to make all these changes in the off season to "save the teams money". how does it save them money if they have to replace half their stuff rendering all the testing they have done useless?

and bring in another fucking tire manufacturer for christ sake, whay do they STILL suck goodyear's cocke every season. i think having a choice between tire manufacurers could be great for the sport.

Earlier in the race when Bush was out front he kept fighting off the high line and the low line by switching back and forth. He did it before either one of them got a run going. Vickers tried to block Jr. after he had a run on him and was coming along side of him. Vickers pushed Jr. down to the yellow line and would have pushed him onto the grass. If Jr. brakes there he's getting spun out. Fuck Vickers and fuck Bush for crying once again when he becomes collateral damage in a crash the likes of which he has caused himself on numerous occasions.

Kudos to Jr. for taking a page out of Sr.'s book for once and not backing down. But fuck Jr. and his team for fucking up on pit road. TWICE! Where was the pit cheif on that one? He's supposed to be on the radio counting down the pit spots to theirs. I can see Jr. missing the sign but that's why the cheif is supposed to be backing him up.

yea cause I grew in the period where they were basically using stock parts, just fabricated doors and fenders. I've been a fan before the National movement started....Nascar came from the South, so it's basically bred into me....sad as that sounds.

just as long as the manufacters have a say so in how the bodies are made and NASCRAP doesn't step in to "Level the playing field", I'm all up for it.....let the MAKES make your competition...Not NASCAR.

If Dale doesn't perform this year, Rick may take Tony Jr. out of the equation.

The thing is, Dale has some tools. It's not like he's Kyle Petty or something.

But he's not focused. It's almost like, to me, that he doesn't want to be there. It's like the pressure of who his father is crushes down on him and limits his chances for success.

Ughhhh. These announcers, especially Waltrip, are the worst in all of sports. To say that the drivers are comfortable in front of the camera because they are "real" and "just like the fans in the seats only they drive race cars" is bullshit. The drivers are comfortable because they are trained to never say anything that might make the sponsors look bad.

Look at the Arod press conference or his Peter Gammons interview and then look at almost any interview with most of the Nascar guys... You'll see the difference between "trained" and comfortable.

However, in this financial environment wins are pretty crucial to the financial flow of any team at this point. I never heard of NASCAR hoping to sell out even the Cali races, let alone Daytona. It's a very good year to stay up top for sponsorship, revenue and more.

Not to mention, it's also ONLY bc of this bullshit system they run with now. Sorry, but the season should surely count for more bc Johnson has now won two titles he shouldn't really have taken. By that I mean Gordon the year prior and Kyle last year. Sure one might say he would have had a shot bc JJ did get hot at the end of both years, but I'd say the gap was too big and the other driver's years would have held up.

I wouldn't go that far. He's no Tony Stewart or Cale Yarborough, but if you look at Fontana he qualified badly, then changed out a transmission to start dead last. He went from 43rd to 14th before the engine gave out. Not a bad job.

Goodyear isn't a sponsor in the way Home Depot is a sponsor. They supply tires, thats it and Tony was right to speak out. Tony Stewart is one of the only drivers that speaks his mind. Most of the others, when interviewed, thank their guys, thank their sponsors then take a sip from a soda that is paying them to do it. Its scripted!!!

Keep an eye out on JPM and Paul Menard also, i think they have solid races tonight

and fuck you spoon, for being the reason I know this

I'm sticking with Biffle no matter what.

That's why I'm losing in the fantasy league.

He's never won a Sprint Cup race at Phoenix, but hopefully last nights win will bring me some luck.
