I met him and his girfriend (at the time) while waiting for a helicopter after the Bristol TN race. They held hands for 15 minutes straight while some of my customers wives were bugging the shit out of him. He was laid back.

i didnt think i would like seeing 2 car racing teams but this daytona 500 was one of the best ive ever seen,i was a dale fan then harvick so i enjoyed their wins but this one had it all even with harvick going out early i enjoyed the race

It really was a cool event but man what a complete free for all every year at this point. Not sure how much driving well actually plays into it versus being lucky early. Fucking DUMB move by Ragan too. I was shocked as he did it and said he should be black flagged. I wonder what would have happened if there wasn't another accident and he captured the checkered? Wow that would have sucked the life out of the winner in the end.

I was at this race, but obviously didn't hear dumb Waltrip, that's too funny. We probably had a worse view of the whole thing than he did, but we were never confused about how the car got into the wall.

and in a side note, I gotta get better seats next year, two rows off the track is too fucking close. I had pieces of rubber hitting me in the face all night and I may be deaf in my right ear, sounds like a swarm of bees.

You can feel the rumble of the cars as they go by, and it's a party, you can bring you own beer, and if you sit up higher than I did you can socialize or listen to the race coverage and your favorite driver on a scanner. TV doesn't do justice to just how fast these guys are going, it is insane the speeds these guys go for 500 miles. It's also about the competition, it's like watching any sport, you have a favorite who you root for. And no, I'm not saying Nascar is a real sport, I'm on the fence on that one.

I love the Busch defenders who say Harvick blocked Busch in. There was PLENTY of room for Busch to avoid a confrontation. If Busch doesn't get parked for a race I'm going to be REALLY pissed off.

Well... I was given 4 tickets to the "Irwin Tools Night Race" at Bristol for this Saturday.

Sitting in "The Allisons" grandstand, section N, row 32:

It's gonna be a helluva drive up there and back, and hoping the damn hurricane stays off shore. If this race gets postponed, I'm not sure we'll be able to stay through Sunday.

Per just about everyone's recommendation... we've got a scanner reserved with 4 headsets and intercom system (to communicate amongst ourselves). Whole set-up was around $140 to RENT! Hope it's worth it, and not just able to hear anything during cautions, but everyone's said "you gotta get a scanner".

Got a hotel booked down in Knoxville, but I'm still wondering how the post-race traffic will be. I've been in small college towns when 80k people are trying to get out. I can't imagine 160k all trying to get onto the same interstate. I've mapped some back roads (again, per suggestion), but that's still a helluva lot of people exiting the same area at once, and if I know the "back road"... I'm sure a lot of others do as well.

Place looks like a huge football stadium, and 32 rows up, and with the banking, we should be able to see everything, and we're right across from the frontstretch pits. They say the track sits down even lower, like the whole track it dug out like a bowl.

I really don't mind extra miles. I'd rather be moving than sitting staring at taillights for hours, but if this way is going to be a parking lot too... we won't bother.

Wow. SO glad everyone talked us into using the tickets. It was everything that everyone had said it would be.

My chick took some vids. Not sure if you'll get the feel the way the vid from Darlington captured the speed and sound, but from what I saw off the camera, they're not bad.

We had the headsets with the scanner and intercom system, and had them on from the pre-race on. It wasn't until the first person had to head to the concourse, and took theirs off, that I saw the look of horror on their face as they finally experienced the sound without protection.

The boys headed down to the bottom of the stands to get an up close look and some pictures, but they couldn't keep the camera still for any to come out. They said the sound and force of the cars going by was un-real from that close (I was surprised how close to the wall they let people get), and they had an absolute blast there the whole night.

Just a couple of notes about the race / track / town:

Be prepared for the changes in elevation. We were NOT. Holy crap. I'd planned another vacation day for today, but instead of using it to un-pack, wash clothes, etc., I'm now using it to rest sore leg and ankle muscles. We'd parked in the free lot we'd planned, but had no idea how many hills there were just to get to the track. Then, even once we were close, it was another climb from one side to the other, then another up to the gates, just to get into the LOWER tier of seats. Not to mention that we were completely disoriented by the time we'd gotten there, and our "visual markers" of how to get back to where we parked, were no longer visible. It was a total guess, and trial and error (and MANY wasted climbs and descents), and finally following another lost group through some brush and unchartered territory just to make it back to the highway we had to cross to make it down into the dust bowl we'd parked in.

Bring or rent headsets with the intercom system if you want to communicate during the race. First, I can't believe there were actually people there with nothing over there ears. Lots of them. Just, wow. Second, those that were wearing something, were reduced to hand signals, and I saw one couple with a note pad they'd pass back and forth. The only thing that sucked for us is that I had reserved ours through racingelectronics.com, and their site showed "13 locations". But only two had all the equipment we needed, and they were on opposite sides of the monsterous stadium. Yup, we stood in line for 30 minutes only to find out that we'd went to the one that had sold out, and had to climb up the ramps and around to the other side to stand in line again to get ours, then all the way back around to our seats. Between that, and the $140 it cost to rent, it really didn't seem worth it... until the race started. Then, it all seemed very much worth the aggrevation, sweat and expense.

If it'd just been me and another guy who knew racing... probably not. But with the set up, I was able to talk to my boys and my chick throughout and explain things at times. Plus, listening to their reactions was priceless. I think they're hooked now.

Be prepared to wait for hours after the race. Ok, I'd been told this, and have lots of experience leaving small college towns overrun with football fans on game days... but this beat anything I'd ever seen. Between having to return the headsets/scanner, and getting our place in line, we left before all of the post-race stuff and fireworks were over. I was thinking that we would at least secure our place in the car lines, and be ahead of a little bit of traffic.

Wrong. We literally sat with the car in park for almost an hour. We might have moved one car length the entire time. It would not have made a bit of difference if we'd sat comfortably in our stadium seats watching fireworks and the post race stuff for another hour. We would have gotten just as far in traffic.

No offense to the fine folks in the State of Tennessee... but c'mon man. There's no state troopers or sherrifs, or anyone you could get to direct some traffic?

We finally realized that nothing was moving because there was a bottle neck of folks in line toward the main exit, and very few were turning left to go the backroad route I was told about, and both lanes were backed up with people trying to turn the same way. All it would have taken was one guy keeping the left lane open for people actually trying to turn left, and we'd saved an hour. We had plently of snacks and beverages, and the boys had their dvd screens in the back, and the chick was occupied with her phone and facebook... but it was painful just sitting there staring at taillights with no hope in sight. It was after 2 a.m. before we made it back to Knoxville, and still had to make it back to the gulf coast the next day.

But, the race experience was awesome, and enough to make us consider going back, especially with some lessons learned. We'd definitely get there earlier, pony up a bit for better parking with less of a mountain climb there and back, and hopefully with better access to a paved road leading out. I'd still give the Bristol Night Race two big thumbs up!

Awesome to hear that you enjoyed the experience - minus the cluster fuck it is getting out of the track. Believe it or not it has gotten so much better over the years but it is so fucking bad. Spot on thinking about waiting for awhile next time. The veterans always never try to leave until a few hours after the race is over.

Funny about the police force. We have around 200 law inforcement officers on hand for the race but you dont see many of them. They bring them in from all towns around here during this time. Next time, I can give you a better idea of where to park regarding getting out after the race.

im not 100% sure but the last 5 yrs tat double j won the title he was in top 5 going into chase its not like he squeaked into chase and then dominated
