They are. There's injuries. Not a shock. Just hope it's all recoverable and nobody lost an eye or something.
Carl was about 2 seconds from clearing that fence, and no one give a shit about Kesolowski.

but still, watch Jimmie Johnson during the wreck on the backstretch, his car attempted to lift in the back and then Carl's lifted when it was sliding backwards.

In fairness, Edwards car looked like it was about to get back down before he got hit while still half in the air by Newman. And the old cars used to get some serious lift in accidents, especially the roll over shit. This car is pretty fuckin safe, and the fact that Edwards was able to run to the finish should be a great advertisement for this thing.
Even week to week, they beat the fuck out of the cars and they just keep driving.

his car was actually turning back to the forward direction before the contact with Newman....therefore, his tailend probably would have sat back down or he still would have gotten into the wall without tearing up as much as he did.....
but worse case, if his car was turned "more backwards", that car would have gotten lift JUST like the rest. I've predicted this since the first race with the wing....someone is going to get turned around at max speed, the wing is going to be caught with the air and its going to throw the car into the air.....the roof flaps showed they will not work with this car like it did with the older version. I've said its going to happen at Daytona or Talladega more so cause of the environment, but its going to happen. This was just a taste of it.
watch the wreck on the backstretch and keep notice on how Jimmie Johnson's back tires start to lift....

NASCAR needs to get rid of the wings.
No question that the Allison crash changed superspeedway racing forever in NASCAR, but that did not end Allison's career.
Allison was involved in an accident at Alabama International Motor Speedway (now Talladega Superspeedway) in May, 1987 that saw his car cut down a tire, turn sideways and go airborne into the protective catch fence that separates the speedway from the grandstands. The impact with the fence with the rear of the car at over 200 miles per hour (320 km/h) caused nearly 100 yards of fencing to be torn down. Parts and pieces of the car went flying into the grandstand injuring several spectators. This is the same race that Bill Elliott set the all-time qualifying record at 212 mph (341 km/h). In response, NASCAR mandated smaller carburetors for the remaining 1987 events at Talladega and its sister track, Daytona International Speedway. The following year, NASCAR mandated restrictor plates at Daytona and Talladega to keep speeds under 200 miles per hour (320 km/h). Allison would win the first Daytona 500 run with restrictor plates in February 1988 by beating his son Davey Allison. He is the oldest driver (50 years) ever to win the Daytona 500 and the first one-two father/son finish in the Daytona 500.
Later that season, on June 19, 1988, Bobby Allison nearly died in a crash at Pocono Raceway, but was left with injuries that forced his retirement from NASCAR.

I nearly had a heart attack watching that crash.
It seems one of the spectators did:
Lewis added that an eighth patient, also a female, was air-lifted to nearby Brookwood Hospital after suffering chest pains that occurred during or shortly after she witnessed the incident while sitting in the same grandstand section as the others who were injured.

I've been to the track while testing was going on. It's one of those places where I'd rather watch the race at home, or be up in the nosebleeds to see the back stretch.
I'd love to go to Talladega to see a Cup race live, but I'd never want to have one of those seats at the start/finish line.
But as an Earnhardt fan, I love watching year in, year out.

Talladga and Bristol are the two tracks that started up my love for NASCAR. I was lucky enough to go to a race last year and its still one of the best experiences I've had at a sporting event. You're right about wanting to sit up high there. You can't see shit on the back half of the track unless you're up on the 2nd level.

you hope. Just cause theres been 2 bad wrecks in this COT version and the drivers have walked away unscathed, doesn't mean they will in the third one....remember Dale Earnhardt and his Daytona crash. You can watch so many wrecks where you'd go, "Oh MAN, he's gotta be DEAD!" and they'd come appearing from the car but a simple looking wreck like Sr's killed him, and yes I know why it killed him but the fact is a broken seatbeat doesn't kill....the car slamming into the wall breaking the belt does.
Just like Richard Petty has said for years, "You can never be too safe in a race car. You can always make this thing safe and something else will become unsafe...."
the wing is shit....worse case, that car could have caught much more air and went into the crowd making it a tragedy, not an exciting moment.

I didn't realize that Poole had died until I read it here. I assume he didnt have any symptoms since he already wrote about Talladega. I was reading his columns last night at thatsracin and by looking at his picture, I was thinking that he really needed to make some life changes or he could die young. I enjoyed his writing. Through all of NASCAR's expansion over the last decade, he refused to be a lapdog and was critical at many times...a voice of reason that only recently others in NASCAR-related media have spoken, too.

Eh, this week didn't hold up to me. It was WAY too long, WAY too delayed and just all over the place. The prior week was a little better, but both did set caution records or at least tie them. There has to be something done with destroyed cars going back out and causing 3 cautions themselves and then finally leaving the track. It gets fucking old seeing destroyed multi-lapped cars not only getting in the way racing hard when they couldn't when ON THE LEAD LAP. Yet it's even worse when they keep taking racers in the hunt out and the constant cautions bc of them. Isn't there some set of standards out there for going back out outside of forward motion?

Seriously, how does someone at this level of racing miss his pit box as many times as Jr. has this season? Is he not working on it? If it was the crew making this many mistakes, major changes would be happening.
And, why doesn't Said get a real shot? He's a great personality and pitchman and talented and would bust his ass for a full time ride.

I wouldn't go that far.
I think the problem is, quite simply, that Junior isn't focused on racing. You don't have the success Jr. had earlier in his career and just fall apart like he has, especially with the better equipment. Having Tony Jr. around doesn't help things either.
Maybe it's unfair to kill Jr. because he rubbed the wall and took himself out of the race - after all, it IS Darlington, and Kyle Busch, who is a supremely talented driver, did the same exact thing.
I'd like to think, in a perfect world, that changing out the Crew Chief would be the first step in getting Jr. "back".
But Junior needs to focus on racing.

It is the equipment and adjustments his new crew chief Alan Gustafson has made during runs.....Jr is embarrassed by not getting the results everyone has expected....The chemistry was not good at the end of the DEI run with Tony....And better equipment Tony can not seem to get a handle on..

I think TNT does the best production work and their analysis is the best too. Wally and Kyle don't get caught up in their own personas and don't try to be the main attraction. I will say, though, I think ABC or ESPN..whoever does the IRL races, are head and shoulders above any of the networks that do NASCAR. Their placement and use of cameras is phenominal IMO

TNT did a good job with the "wide open" coverage, a version of side-by-side commercials that I think was a good way to show all the green flag racing, although those Viagra commercials are aweful.

I need to look into NASCAR events and commercial programming. During Jr's oil spill yellow flag they must have taken 3-4 commercial breaks, now after 2-3 laps on the restart they went directly to another break.
The only thing I can think of is they're setting it up to show the final 15 laps commercial free. It seems they should be up to speed by now with how long that Caution was.

I drove to Pocono last Monday since I had nothing better to do to test the theory. Sure nuff, even though they were selling tickets at the window, there were no staff to take them. Jimmie Johsnon.........four in a row. It's pretty much over now. He's been building towards these last ten races all year. I wouldn't be the least bit surpised that he'll come back and win it again next year as well.

To summarize ESPN's coverage of this race:
"Danica! Danica Danica Danica Danica! Danica Patrick! Danica!"
I hope she ends up in the wall on the first lap, and the other woman in this race, who no one is saying shit about, actually does win.

I missed both the Daytona and Auto Club and I'll be traveling this Sunday too.
I'm also officially looking for a new driver to support. I've always liked Smoke...I think I may just move over to him for the season.

Great finish at Loudon budday! Too bad you couldn't do this to be able to be in the Chase.

I am against this rule has imposed four cars of NASCAR. Otherwise, it might be aboard the HMS drive your vehicle fifth. You can wait until Mark Martin retires or gets tired of his interpreter Hedrick, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Penske cars and only 3 could be another team. Petty has not worked well and I hear they are changing manufacturers next year.
first time ive heard of this but all i can say is its about f'n time

The new system might be better, but not changed enough for me.
I don't mind a change, but I don't want them changing it year after year so even though I think there are flaws, I also hope they just stick to it for legitimacy.
The winner gets 46 points, not 43. Not sure why they award the winner's points and the winner's bonus points seperately.
But at least now the winner gets about 9% more points than 2nd place. It used to be only about 3% more.

even still winner gets 46 2nd place has 42 not enough incentive for me
winner should get 10 more or 25 more thatll make races more exciting and make them push extra hard to get that win rather than just stay where they are and get a top five or top ten

I just looked into it again, and you get a bonus point for leading a lap. So the winner gets 47 points.
I don't like the point for leading a lap. Maybe it could be a point for leading 5 laps or something, but how many times do you see somebody in 31st stay out on a caution, lead a lap, pit, then come back out in basically in the same position.

agreed the need to emphasize winners and strength
so i say the driver who gets the most laps gets the point
not everyone who leads a lap

you guys arent recognizing that 1 point out of 43 is alot less of an impact as 5 out of 165,i think its a good rule

you guys arent recognizing that 1 point out of 43 is alot less of an impact as 5 out of 165,i think its a good rule
1/43 =2.3%
5/165=3.0%
I wouldn't call that a lot less. And especially if you look at one lap in a 200 lap race being 0.5% of the race, the reward for leading a single lap is still way more out of proportion than the actual value of that lap during the race (considering that most races are more than 200 laps, any single lap is even less more significant)
So, while it may be a step in the right direction, it still is a far cry from a 'good rule' in my opinion.

1/33 old points
if you look at it that way its alot more and some drivers that are on the edge wont stay out to lead that lap because they wont be gaining that much. pit time will make more of a difference

I hope you're right Mr. Spy. I just don't think the new points system will force any major changes in strategy than what we've seen in recent years. But I really hope you're right.

Listen uncledaddy... Just cuz brothergrandpa ran moonshine doesn't make driving fast a SPORT...
NASCAR, is most definitly not a sport..
It's trailer park birth control at best...
Watching a vehicle go around in a circle for six hours only appeals to people who actually, live in a vehicle..
Cars are about as exciting to me as the dentist is to you..And,
you will NEVER catch me spending my days off watching buildings settle..But even if I did, I wouldn't have the sack to try and pass it off as a sport..;-)
