Young @ Heart...old people singing rock songs..I liked it!
Hear and Now..Dunno if it is out yet on DVD but on HBO on Demand: A 60-something Deaf couple decide to get Cochlear Implants...some funny moments..like when "Dad" decides to turn off his implant because "Mom" is talking too much.

I want to check out the film on Joe Strummer and the Clash. Ron interviewed the director, but I can't remember the name of him, or the film.
I also want to see the G.G. Allin documentary. But I'm not interested in just music, or performance art.

i think the Joe Strummer one is 'Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten'. Seems like i've seen too many Strummer/Clash docs to remember which is which.
also, check out Man on Wire. They have it in the watch instantly category.

I got hooked on watching Documentaries on Netflix, too. I really enjoyed King Corn (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1112115/). It's about the impact of corn in our lives, and how it came to be such a huge part of the American diet.
I'll post some more when I think of them.

I have two others lined up at Netflix: The Death of the Electric Car (something like that)

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479879/)
The King of Kong (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/)
I like video games, and these two movies above were pretty interesting, specially King of Kong. They go around and interview all of the "big name" arcade gamers that were once looked upon like rock stars for like a year, and details where they are now.
Michael Moore's docs are ok, but depends on how much you agree with him or disagree with him. I watch documentaries with an open mind. Sicko is his most recent.
Religulous is Bill Maher's. I haven't seen it yet though.
Taxi to the Dark Side is a good one also.

I've watched that at least 10 times. I used to own it, I need to get another copy. My favorite part in the movie is when they go to compete for the first time. Everyone else looks like they're doing ballet moves; then Jay Adams comes out and just rocks right off the platform. That documentary is fantastic.

My Dad worked in the ski industry and was on a pretty friendly basis with Warren Miller. I never met him though. I still have a few older movies on VHS. Great stuff!

I think the earliest one I own is "Time Waits for Snowman" which came out in the 80's. Early for me anyway. I knew he's been doing them for quite some time but never knew he had movies going back to the 60's. If you find out where to find any really early movies please let me know. I really love that era of skiing.
Sidenote: I remember I was about 10 years old and we spent the weekend skiing at Hunter mt, and on the way back we stopped at Mitch Cubberly's house. He invented the "Cubco" ski binding which was totally cutting edge for the time. The details are fuzzy, but I remember feeding his little turtles that he kept in a little pond on his deck.

Great list. I particularly like Heart of Darkness and Burden of Dreams. If you like Apocalypse Now you have to see this documentary of how it was made. Burden of Dreams is kind of similar. It is the story of Herzog making Fitzcarraldo in the South American jungle. If you like Burden of Dreams, also see My Best Fiend Klaus. A documentary about the relationship between Herzog and Kinski.

The ATF's #1 priority is statutory rape, everyone knows this...
Also, as far as wacky assed cults go, I'm pretty sure Netflix has both "A" and "A2", a pair of documentaries about the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Japan after the 1995 subway sarin attacks. Interesting stuff, if you're into that sort of thing I guess.

If you like that documentary, try the Roky Erickson movie. I think it's called You're Going to Miss Me. Someone might have already mentioned it. I saw him at the Bowery Ballroom after the movie came out. When you see the state he was in, it's amazing that he is back playing live.

This is why you read through the whole thread - I was going to suggest Errol Morris, in general. He's like the Herzog of Documentaries. He is simply fascinated by people and the stories they can tell. It's like he can't believe life experience is different for every different person.
Also, on the Herzog tip - Lessons of Darkness. A doc about the burning of Kuwaiti oil fields. Truly a beautiful film.

I love documentaries. I could watch them everyday. I've watched quite a few but here are my absolute favorite in order of how I liked them:
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - Is a documentary that follows Steve Wiebe as he tries to take the world high score for the arcade game Donkey Kong from reigning champion Billy Mitchell.
The UP series (7 up, 7+7, 14 up, and so on) - Consists of a series of documentary films that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old to current day. It comes out every 7 years.
Grey Gardens - This is a film about Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale were the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The two women lived together at Grey Gardens in squalor and almost total isolation.
Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hill - Is a film bout the trials of three teenage boys in West Memphis, Arkansas for the murder and sexual mutilation of three prepubescent boys. The boys on trial for the crime are: Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin, also known as the West Memphis 3.
Paradise Lost 2: Revelations -Is a sequel to the first one.
American Movie - Is about the making of an independent film. Milwaukee filmmaker Mark Borchardt feverishly works to finish his independent horror film Coven, but slides into a downward spiral of poor financing and lack of planning.
The Bridge - Tells the stories of a handful of individuals who committed suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004.
Gates of Heaven -Is a film by Errol Morris about the pet cemetery business.
Man on Wire - The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center.
Land of Silence and Darkness - Werner Herzog follows Fini Straubinger, a deaf-blind woman, to numerous events as she visits with other people in the deaf-blind community, discussing their struggle to live in the modern world with their disabilities. He reveals their communication with each other through a sort of sign language of strokes and taps on the other person's palm.
Grizzly Man - Werner Herzog chronicles the life and death of bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell.
Spellbound - The film follows eight competitors in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Comedians of Comedy - Is a film that documented a stand-up comedy tour featuring Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Brian Posehn and Maria Bamford in 2005.
Hell House - Is a film about American fundamentalist Christian churches or parachurch groups who build haunted houses. Hell houses frequently feature exhibits that depict sin and its consequences. Common examples include abortion, suicide, use of alcoholic beverages, recreational drugs, adultery, pre-marital sex, occultism, homosexuality, and satanic ritual abuse.
The Times of Harvey Milk - Documents the political career and the rise and fall of Harvey Milk who was San Francisco's first openly gay supervisor.
This Film Is Not Yet Rated - Is a film about the Motion Picture Association of America's rating system and its effect on American culture.
No End In Sight - Is a 2007 documentary film about the American occupation of Iraq.
Little Dieter Needs to Fly - Werner Herzog returns to the jungle with Dieter Dengler to tell an incredible tale of courage and survival against impossible odds. Led to the movie Rescue Dawn.
Sicko - Is a film by Michael Moore who investigates the American health care system, focusing on its health insurance and pharmaceutical industry. The film compares the for-profit, non-universal U.S. system with the non-profit universal health care systems of Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Cuba.
Salesman - The documentary follows four salesmen as they travel across New England and Florida trying to sell expensive Bibles door-to-door in low-income neighborhoods. The film focuses in particular on the struggles of salesman Paul Brennan, an old Irish Catholic from Boston who struggles to keep up his sales.

BODY OF WAR - Phil Donhaue
Tough to watch. Not sure if it's on Netflix yet - I got it off the Sundance channell. I tried for six months to see it after Ron interviewed Phil Donahue, it never showed up in theatres hear.
Thank God for The Independent Film Channell and The Sundance Channell

This is actually good? I was afraid to watch it. I thought it was something thrown together to exploit the success of Requiem for a Dream.
Say the word and I'll toss it on the Roku.

I say watch all the other ones you have lined up first. Then when you run out of stuff come back to this. It has some nice interviews, but it's tough to watch him with the oxygen hooked up to his nose.

It follows Amish teens as they go through "rumspringa" (sp?) where they're allowed to try anything and do anything they want for a year. At the end of the year, they have to decide whether or not they want to be Amish. It was interesting.

i think the Joe Strummer one is 'Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten'.
That's the one I was talking about but couldn't remember the title. Julien Temple, the director came in and got interviewed by Ron.

Saw Fitzcarraldo, saw Burden of Dreams, but I've never heard of My Best Friend Klaus. I'll have to check it out, because the first two films I mentioned are good stuff.

I watched it two nights ago. Amazing. Herzog can do no wrong. The footage of Kinski is beyond belief ... his 'poetry readings' are out of this world - a true mad man. You're gonna love it.

I saw Man on Wire and it was pretty entertaining.
I wanted to see Trouble the Water, but didn't get around to it. Anyone see it?

I've been wanting to check this one out for a while. I used to work with the Amish at a farmers market on the weekends, and would love to see how this process works.
Also, for a rockumentary.....

I just finished watching King of Kong and it was really cool; that was my game way back when. I was a little disappointed with Mitchell, who never really showed up the whole movie. The guy's ego is huge and he's calling up his friend to find out whose already out at dinner with him. His idea of head-to-head competition was ridiculous. Great doc. though.

Oh Snap!! That is an amazing doc. I saw some Tuvan throat singers here in Brooklyn about 3 years ago - they were incredible. Apparently, they were just in town again this past december but I missed it...

How about the movie Slasher about the goings on around a major car at a car dealer. interesting to see how it all goes down.
All the HBO docs back in the day were good esp the one about this small skinhead group in GA.

PLANET B-BOY
It's a straightforward doc about breakdancing and the b-boy culture. The focal point is the BATTLE OF THE YEAR in Korea. Crews from every corner of the globe compete at this thing.
If you're into this kinda thing at all... this is the film to rent.

Watch super charismatic elderly people talk about their insanely jealous 60's romance. Shocking ending to a bizarre love story, and I don't shock easy.

LOVE documentaries some of the favorites that were already mentioned:
-Rick9669, Fog Of War....fascinating to hear how history was shaped by McNamara and some of his proud moments and regrets
-DanG, The Bridge....its quite trippy to watch the video of someone jump off the Golden Gate knowing that they'll likely be killed (some do survive) but also the interviews with the families of some of the people who made the decision to "cross over" (the director's term for suicide)
-CoachMac, Grizzly Man....call me a sick fuck but I found it comical to watch Treadwell (the main character) who is so CLEARLY out of his gourd mess with the bears and know damn well that it wasn't going to end well....its like a wilderness snuff film
-Coach, The Iceman Tapes....its stunning to watch Richard Kuklinski talk about the heinous murders he was responsible for and be so completely calm....if you do watch the program and are interested check out the book by Philip Carlo, The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer
Some other documentaries I've really enjoyed:
-A Certain Kind of Death
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342180/)
-Auschwitz: Inside The Nazi State (http://www.pbs.org/auschwitz/)
-Black & White, Roy Orbison (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0500183/)
-pretty much all of the PBS Nova and Frontline programs
-Saint of 9/11 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795458/)
-Trinity and Beyond (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114728/)
oh and if you're looking for a laugh see if you can find "Mr. Hands" although I doubt it will be on netflix

Just watched Porn Star:Ron Jeremy it was okay, not great. And the Devil and Daniel Johnston which was really quite good. I did not realize he was such a graphic artist as well as a self-taught musician. I wish they'd stressed that most of his work was only available on low-fi homemade cassettes.
