Can anyone explain the process of playing AVIs on my PS3 and or XBox? Do I have to burn them to DVD a certain way or something? If so, can anyone recommend any programs? THanks.

For the PS# you have a couple options. You can stick avis on a USB thumb drive and copy them onto the PS3s hard drive. PS3 is very good about supporting codecs, it even supports DIVX.

You could also use a program like TVersity and have the PS3 stream files from your computer. This is obviously more involved but offers you unlimited access to whatever is on your PC.

For the 360 I'd imagine it would be similar.

So you don't burn to DVD at all?

If you want them on DVD, just burn them as data files.

You don't have to, no.

Just make sure the files are in the VIDEO directory on the drive, or the PS3 won't find them.

The problem is, not all AVIs are created equal. Most DIVX encoded files seem to work, but I've had trouble getting the PS3 to play XVID files.

OK, I made a test last night - Hbox, do you HAVE to copy the movies to the PS3? I was playing a WMV off the thumb drive easy last night, no copying necessary.

I'd still like to find out how I can play movies on the Xbox 360.

I just gave it a quick test with my kid's Xbox in the playroom. It seems that have to have a computer on the network running windows media player 11 in order to stream the videos. I didn't really want to install that right now so it was a no go for now. I'll try to get windows media player 11 going on the desktop computer soon and see how it goes from there.

Two options for 360:

1) Windows Media 11 - but limitations on codecs

2) TVersity

Nope. I just stream movies to my PS3. If you want to use the picture album or send pictures throught the PSN, you'll have to copy them over. Same goes with music, if you intend to listen to it while playing games then you'll need a copy on your ps3.

Doesn't Tversity create a security issue on your laptop then?

You can drag/drop xvid files to a thumb drive, then plud that drive into pone of the usb ports on the 360. No need to burn a dvd.

Yeah there's absolutely no need to connect your 360 to a computer just to play .avi files. If you wanna stream yes, but just to play files it's way easier. As was said for PS3, you can either burn the data files to a DVD or just throw them on a thumb drive or portable hard drive and then play them. As far as I know, you can't copy them to the hd, and just play them off whatever media you put them on. So it's pretty easy.

I really have to apologize.

I had no idea that the 360 had a USB port.

Once I found that little nugget out, I was up and running as soon as I reconnected the Xbox to the internet and got the media update.

Thanks Goat, and everyone else.

(BTW, the thumb drive I had was too big to fit into the slot... I had to run a USB cable out from the port and then plug the drive into that.)
