I was trying to figure out a way to get recorded shows (in HD) off of my DVR without it getting letterboxed, like it would if I burned using my DVD recorder. Other than spending a grand to get a Blu Ray recorder from Japan, is there any way to do this? There is a USB port on my box (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300), but I am afraid it one of those "reserved for future use" deals. I'd love to be able to just hook my laptop up and transfer the file.
Anyway, any ideas?

No way to transfer, your only way would be to input to the laptop and record in real time, this will take a huge amount of diskspace.
The content on the dvr is protected (in most cases) and unreadable from the comp.
I've heard rumor of a program that may help while searching google previously, but never found said program myself.

i think instrument is right, i have a PC tuner card that i can connect to my DVR to save anything i deem worthy, but as previously stated it takes massive amounts of disk space. i used to use the pc as a DVR before i got the actual DVR. now i just use it as a second Tv for sporting events and whatnot.
