NFL: Field Goal Adjustments

Mike and Mike had someone bring up a pretty interesting idea for updating the Field Goal rules and benefits.

Don't remember the callers name, but he brought up that the Field Goal value should be raised and lowered depending on the actual distance of the field goal. He stated that field goal over 50 yards should be worth 4 points.

Here is what I thought would be pretty balanced. I know it is a big change, but I thought that you can reward people for making kicks that have a really slim chance of getting in.

Kicks under 25: 2 Points
Kicks between 25 and 50: 3 Points
Kicks over 50: 4 Points


Thought this was interesting, but I can see both the positives and negatives of overhauling such a staple of the league.

Again, I'm not condoning or want it to happen. Just wanted to see what people thought.

Not a FG but I remember Belichick talking on EEI about the extra point. He thought was that something that's 99.9% isn't really much of a challenge and might need to be tweaked

The problem with the idea is that the field goals value really isnt based on how long it is but rather how far a team is behind or ahead on the score board. sometimes a long field goal being worth 2 points could be even more key than a chip shot worth 3 points. 2 weeks between Championships and Super Bowl leads to lots of these discussions while they try to come up with something to talk about

It gives the losing team a fighting chance to win the game, which could be looked upon as a negative and leaning towards the losing team at that time.

Well let's say you are on the 50 yard line, 4th down, 20 secs to go. You are losing by 3 or 4 points. You can sink a shot to either tie or win the game from there. If you miss you lose anyway. There is a high risk for taking such a long kick, but if you sink it you caused a dramatic big win.

Plus minuses.

I think that if you can kick it through the uprights on the kickoff you should get some points. Like 2 and the opposing team then in turn would start on the 20.

I would tweak the rule further that within the last 2:00 of the game, all FG's inside 50 are worth 3.

i say the closer you get the more points the field goal should be worth. why potentially reward an offense for not advancing the ball? i realize a fifty yarder is harder than a thirty yarder, but it might prevent offenses from trying to move the ball upfield.

This was my exact thought when reading the first post. This would penalize a team that has moved the ball downfield then stalled out.

This may be the dumbest rule change attempt I ever heard. When it becomes forth down I can see teams false starting just so the FG would be worth more. It rewards you for having a crappy affense. Now 2 long FGs are worth MORE than a TD. Football works, lets not try to change it.

OT is fine the way it is, play better defense , you will get the ball back

Ties are part of the game in the regular season

Instant Replay is there for errors by the officials, dont try to be bright and ask to review holding penalties and false starts

The 2 Point conversion is also available if you want to be gutsy and make things interesting


I hate Sports Talk callers, almost as some of the pompus creeps who host the shows

Exactly. Your teams down 3. Other team has the ball and fumbles on its own 20 with 20 seconds left. Do you take a shot at the end zone that most likely wont work or do you take the 15 yard sack, call a timeout and try for the 50 yarder to win the game? It just goes against the whole goal of the game.

No team would kick a 2 pt fg they would take a delay of game penalty and move back for 3 pts

I think we should have judges that will rate the end zone touchdown dance, and that will give you the spot on which to kick your extra point.

Kinda like "Hole in one" on The Price is Right. The more you know about prices, the closer you get to putt.

well why not run out of bounds in the 3 point range? these are all adjustments and strategies you must think about. nobody is saying its a perfect idea, just something to think about.

How about if you block the extra point attempt and run it back for a td or run back an intercepted 2 point attempt the defense gets some points for it.
