Ok so the third shift kid said he was doing stuff and then when he came back to the pc it was off.
I noticed the busy light or HDD light was blinking.
Well I unplugged the PS first. then plugged it in again. Tried that, nothing. Not even a start up spin from the fans.
Unplugged the HDD both wires. and the PS. Plugged the ps back in and nothing again. But the light on the front of the PC was not blinking. NOt even a fan move.
Unplugged the Ram and the HDD. nothing. Not even a fan move.
This pc has no video card or anything else other than a network card.
Could it be the network card?
Also this is the HDD with my Ron Fez lists and a whole bunch of other things on it.
I hope its not the HDD.

No fans, no lights, no nothing?
(after checking the outlet has power) Replace the power supply.

Start the chain, man.
Check power plug, switch computer to other power switch and try
Check power strip/surge protector, swap in a different one
Check power cord from PC to power strip, swap in another one
Is the PS turning on AT ALL if pulled out of the computer?
Give the PS a sniff and where the PS connects to the mobo. Any smell?
Did you worker kick the machine out of frustration? Look for scuff marks
All signs point above. If no power is getting to the PS, then most likely the PS is the problem unless it is something before that.
Yeah if there are no lights at all then there is a very good chance that the PS is toast, is it old? Even if the HDD is dead the computer should still try to boot up and you should see some lights on the motherboard, depending on the computer the PS arent that expensive usually so hope that is all that is wrong.

Can you swap power cords with a Monitor at all? PS fan not even spinning when plugged in. I work in a sand factory and i am not smeling anything. There was about 2-3 lbs of dust in there. I cleaned that out and didnt want to smell anything. But there is no light on the MOBO that i could find. Even in the dark. the only light is the HDD light blinking when the machine is plugged in. No fans or nothing.

Removed the HDD anyway. Also as stated above. My and my supervisor ciuld find no PC MOBO light. We even plugged it and turned the lights off.
Price is no object here. this work so it doesnt matter. This PC has had the HDD replaced 2 times in two years.
Also This is a bare minimum PC. no sound card/video card/ or controllers. All on the MOBO.
its a dell.
Any find a link to some Filter media for PC's?

If no lights are on then that means that no power is getting to the box. If you work in a sand factory, and there was a lot of dust, then there is a high propability that the power supply is dead.
Do you have a similar spare you can swap in?
Also, have you discharged the box's electricity at all? Unplug all power cords from the box, and hold in the power button for 30 secs. Then plug it back in, and try it again. Unlikely it will work.
You may want to look into some filters to put on your intake fans. they are removable and washable.

We have other PC in my lab (5 total) but my boss doesnt want me tinkering
NO no spare or anything at the plant. The guy that does that stuff is to far from me. Its been unplugged for a while. Also I took the battery out of the MOBO for bout min as well.
This blows becuase it will more than likely be another week to get a new PC.
and the Spare pc we are going to get is more than likely going to have IDE:sad: so I wont even be able to hook the HDD up to it.
I got FireFox on that HDD along with a lot of pics and bookmarks.
FYI. your instant feedback got read on a replay.
I would just get a new PS, if your HDD keeps going out there may be other issues in the computer such as voltage issues or regulating power to the HDD, most PCs have an extra slot to install that HDD in another computer and just get it recognized as another drive. I would try that then either replace the pc or get a new PS, like geno said, if there is no lights anywhere then power is not getting to the mobo.

Strikes me that the power distributor on the mainboard may have been the cause of this.

I'd focus on getting your stuff off of the HD. Slave it up with a good drive and get your pics and other crap. Me personally I wouldn't worry too much about some POS Dell desktop. Just my $.02...

You said you moved to a different part of the room. I'm guessing that means a different outlet than the one you were in. Can you plug something in to make sure the outlet is live? A lamp? Or does your surge protector have a light on it?
(And did you make sure the surge protector was turned on?)
