I gave chocolate to my nieces dogs, then realized afterward that it was a bad thing to do. I knew as I gave it that there was something about dogs and chocolate but I couldn't remember until they swallowed it. I looked it up and it says that chocolate is toxic to them. I feel terrible! This was on Saturday and today I heard that one of the dogs is having trouble taking a shit. I know if I say anything I will get in deep trouble with them and never hear the end of it. It was 1 piece of chocolate each. The piece was the size of a piece from a russle stover chocolate box. The dogs are a shiit zhu and a maltipoo.
If these dogs die I think I will never forgive myself. But the fear of getting in trouble also scares me. Should I say anything? Is the amount of chocolate I gave a toxic amount? The dogs weigh like 20 lbs each.

It would take a lot of chocolate to kill a dog. Our boxer ate a whole box of chocolate cookies last month. He puked a lot, but was fine after a day or so. If the dogs are still alive now, they are going to be fine.

You're a grown man. Why would you fear getting "in trouble" with your family?

You don't know these people. Its my wifes family anyway. These people have a cartain amount of control over me because I rent my apartment from them. But aside from that, they are the kind of people that hold lifelong grudges. I love the dogs though, they are total mushes and loveable and I'd rather hurt myself then them.

The dogs will live. It takes a lot of chocolate to poison a dog enough to kill it. Don't worry about it. Hopefully you didn't feed them grapes and onions either.

I heard about onions but not grapes. They are bad too? I have anothe relative whose chiauahu (sp?) Eats grapes by the handfull. I won't ever give chocolate again, but I was feeling so horible when I heard about the dog having problems.

Yeah grapes, onions, raisins, sugar etc.
You can find a list somewhere if you want.

I taught my boys by age 2.
Dad - NEVER leave chocolate around where the dog can get it.
Kid - Why?
Dad - She will puke and die!
If you ask my kids to this day, you will get the same answer.

I can honestly say you are a dumbass. Why anyone would feed anything to an animal that doesn't belong to them is amazing to me. Why not just give chocolate to children you pass on the streets?

It won't kill the dog.
But it's ok if by chocolate you meant your penis.

:annoyed:
Actually, that's not ok at all.:furious:

Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it.

You have never been at a relatives house while their dogs begged for food from you? This is what happened. It was an ignorant accident on my part and obviously I did not intend to cause harm. I feel guilty, and calling me a dumbass doesn't help anything.

There going to be fine. You would have noticed something odd right away if they were reacting negatively to the chocolate. Dogs will get into a lot of things that are terrible for them don't sweat it.

I would say "Hey can I give your dog some poison that everyone in the world above the age of 2 knows is bad for them?"

BTW, it's never a good idea to feed someone else's dog unless you have permission to do so.

I say tell them. If no other reason just to know they were horrified and had other expressions on their faces other than the usual look of death.

Seriously, I'd scream my head off at someone for doing it.

Trust me I know all about dogs and chocolate. Last summer my 2 dogs busted into a package of chocolate covered coffee beans...really bad combination with the caffeine. I called my vet and he said to mix water and peroxide and make sure to get it into the dog by any means. After a few minutes...look out. They vomited about 5 times each but that was the whole idea. To make them get it out of their system. They were fine in the end. No adverse effects.
I've seen dogs eat their own shit. If that doesn't kill them, nothing will.

Tell them to stop feeding their dog grapes! They can be just as bad as chocolate.

People need to learn that they should never ever feed someone else's dog without the owner's permission. You just never know if a dog should be eating anything except what's in their diet.
Of course dogs will beg you to eat stuff, it's what they do. BUt Always ask before you feed them anything.
Feeding a dog people food when it isn't part of their diet (even if it's non toxic) can set a dog back a long way and have the owner have to train them to stop expecting it.
People are always surprised when I say no after they ask me if they can feed our puppy, but it's straight from our vet's mouth and she has a sensitive stomach. If they wouldn't want to clean up her diarrhea and vomit afterwards, why would I?
I was also given beans when I was a child after my mom told her friend that I was allergic. It was combined with some other food and I didn't notice it. She thought it was in my head. I completely stopped breathing and had to be taken to the emergency room in an ambulance because I couldn't walk.
You just never know how stupid some people can be.
Not saying you're stupid, by the way, just be more careful next time.

Wow, initially I assumed you had to be pretty young, then you mentioned a wife.
I believe I learned by second grade to not feed anyones dog, anything that interrupts a dog normal diet can be awful on their bladder.
Did no one you know have pets growing up?
Weird.

I had my nieces and nephews over on Christmas Eve a few years ago. One of my dogs, who loves opening gifts, tore open a giant Hershey's Kiss and ate it. I rushed her to the veterinary hospital, knowing how toxic chocolate can be to dogs. As luck would have it, she was OK, but I I am much more careful now.

At least your inability to eat beans has made for wonderful music. I've never heard a dog write a good song about not eating chocolate and grapes.
