I don't know if anyone else is excited for this movie, but I'm a huge Neil Gaiman (Sandman, American Gods) fan and I love Henry Selick's movies (Nightmare Before X-Mas, James and the Giant Peach).

This link will show you a new ad for Coraline. It's only 30 seconds, but listen to the voiceover at the end. (http://io9.com/5142241/coraline-+-in-theatres-february-6th)

Sounds like Sleeves, no?

I read the comic when it came out, I wouldve been happier with a live action take but I'm guessing it wouldve looked like a pan's labriynth rip off.

Out today. I'm definitely gonna see it. I REALLY want to do acid and watch but I might now make it out alive.

She's not bringing her kid, is she? This would have given me nightmares in my youth. Probably will now.

So it's not a kids' movie? Some of the ads have made it seem like it is.

Maybe if your kid likes to trip balls

It's from the maker of A Nightmare Before Christmas and is about a girl who finds people who sew buttons into their eyes. It's probably too disturbing for most kids.

The previews look nothing like the book's storyline. As a book nerd, this angers me.:furious:

Yeah mikey, reviews I've seen seem to believe its a little much for young kids.

Maybe watch some extended clips and make the decision.

And yeah there was a coraline comic last year.....graphic novel? I didn't know there was a novel, maybe someone here has read both?

Seen the BBC miniseries? It was the first time I saw Laura Fraser in anything. Thought it was decent for the time, but it deserves a proper film more that this, Stardust or Mirrormask.

i picked it up as 2 disc set about 4 years ago, it was an A&E/BBC release

it's a decent enough production, very true to the story, typical lower budget BBC special effects

I saw this yesterday in 3D and it's great. The 3-D isn't there just for the couple of audience tricks, it's there to enhance the image, much like Bolt. It's also really dark and there's one scene where a really fat lady is wearing a really small bikini which didn't seem very kid friendly. I recommend this.

I saw this movie last night and loved it. I knew I would since I am a Neil Gaiman and Henry Selick fan. It also reminded me of Svankmajer's Alice.

My wife, a friend, and I saw it at that megacinema on Court and State in Brooklyn. Very odd crowd. I don't think they are marketing this film correctly. Weird mix of arty Williamsburg 20 somethings and mothers bringing hordes of very small children. Not good for very young kids and they all got bored and started running around at times and screaming their little heads off at others. I can imagine it being good for kids around 8 and up but not any younger.

John Hodgman from the daily show was great as one of the voices.

That's really not that obscure.

1) Coraline was never a comic, just a book.

2) The early ads took the scariness out of the movie, to Gaiman's chagrin. The later ads did have some of the creepiness added in.

3) Neverwhere has been a book, miniseries, and comic book. There has been talk of a feature film.

Saw this today, loved it. Great use of 3D. Creepiness is probably the last reason that you wouldn't want to bring kids to it. It moves kinda slow, maybe too much for kids and there is some very disgusting partial nudity that was funny but enough that parents might not want younger kids to see. But I might go to see it again just in case they don't release a 3D version on DVD/Blu-Ray.

And I can't be the only one who had no idea that one kid was black until we saw the grandmother.

First off, no idea Wybie was black. What a twist ending!

I enjoyed it. As others have said, the 3D wasn't gimmicky, it was used to enhance the absolutely striking craftsmanship of the animation. Liked the creepiness. Not in the movie, in my mind for going to the theater alone in the late afternoon and hearing a bunch of kids. I should be locked up for it.

Well, he did the book after the miniseries. (Usually he starts in print)

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. A lot like Wall-E, its just too slow for most kids under 10-ish, and America needs to pull its head out of its ass and realize that animation is not just for children. They water this stuff down to make it "kid friendly," but all it does is remove any edginess from it yet still leaves it still too slow and/or complex for kids.

And saw Coraline Sunday. Loved it.

Nope, book first.

Book second:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwhere_(novel)

As I said...it's unusual for him, but it was the case. (and the comic was third)

I'd prefer a sequel to the book before a feature film of the original. It might also spur that.
