I'm visiting friends in a few weeks. They eat chicken and seafood but no beef.

Last night I made a "beef" stroganoff using "soy crumbles." UTTER DISASTER!!!

The recipe called for the noodles to be added to the skillet (with onion, garlic powder, vegetable broth, and fresh mushrooms.)

The soy product completely over powered the recipe, even when the sour cream and fresh parsley were added. Plus, some of the noodles were undercooked.

I'm thinking real chopped meat would have lent a more subtle flavor.

Anyone got an easy, ONE SKILLET recipe?

maybe you could try again with Crazed's un-chicken.

Try making a version with chicken not beef.. soy just always ruins it.

I would add that you sneak in some beef bouillon for flavor as well. Precook the noodles to just about done, then add them to the skillet.

Paula Dean's receipe on foodnetwork.com is really good. I make it often.

Soy crumbles stink.

Personally, I think they taste like Windex, and I will eat pretty much any "vegetarian" stuff out there, but the frozen ones really stink.

I'd use either ground turkey breast or ground chicken breast over soy crumbles ANY TIME.

Even over the veggie "ground round" that I used to use for Hamburger Helper when I was in college.

The texture's all weird when you use soy crumbles.

I was thinking and wondering why as a vegetarian you would eat seafood and chicken but not beef. I guess they are vegetarian for the health aspect and not because cows are more loveable than fish or chicken. I think making it with veggie burger would work.
Stroganoff is a beef thing and I can't imagine it without the beef. If they eat chicken maybe try the cheesy chicken and rice casserole that's on the campbell's cream of chicken soup can. Its actually really good and costs less than $15.00 to make if you are watching your money. It's something I wouldn't be afraid to make for people other than my family.

How bout sub the soy for lots and lots of thick slices of portabella mushrooms? They taste almost like meat themselves esp if you grill them with a dash of worchestershire. We do this as a sub for meat in spaghetti sauce and it is very satisfying. Shrooms rox.

You forgot to add human shit. It really pleasantly hides the taste of the beef strogonoff.
