I think this will end up on best of lists in December. It sounds more like the best of Panda Bear's solo stuff. Fucking brilliant.

I haven't heard it yet, but I have to love a band that names an album after the venue where I spent my summers watching concerts in my youth.

I doubt their follow-up "Cap Centre" is going to be as good. And their final album "Nissan Pavillion" is a just a blantent attempt for corporate sponsorship.

The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record It's Blitz is really good. I might normally bitch about a strong dance element in a record, but I dont mind this at all. The heavier YYYs songs are what made me do a 180 on this band, but I dont miss them here.

You might want to sign up to amazon's twitter account. They offer daily deals on downloads...I believe the Isbell album was only $3.99 the other day.

Black Lips - 200 Million Thousand
I officially love a 2009 album. I'm completely unfamiliar with the earlier releases by the Black Lips but this record is phenomenal. It's lazy and ambitious at the same time. The song styles seem to shift every other song, you're not sure what's coming up next but you get the sense that these guys went into the studio had fun doing whatever they wanted. Very punk in approach, more garage in sound - it's encyclopedic in style.

It comes out on friday, but Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown is fucking fantastic. It has elements of American Idiot, but also encompasses a lot of their other albums. You can tell when it has a Nimrod influence, or when it has a Warning influence. You can also clearly tell that this is the album the Beatles would make if the Beatles were a punk band.

It is very unusual for me to enjoy such hippie folksy music but, Woods really crosses into the psychedelia realm quite seamlessly. Its meanders, no doubt, but it maintains my interest in a way only one or two other albums this year have been able to do. I suggest testing the album out by listening to (well, the whole album really to be fair) "To Clean" - the lead track, "Military Madness" - A great Graham Nash cover, and "September with Pete" - the nine minute freak-out. A quiet album despite the guitar display in the lead off track.

Hey Yojimbo! - I'd be interested to hear what you think because this isn't something I'd ever expect myself to recommend. I'm working with a someone on a project where we review as many non-commercial 2009 releases as possible. The idea is that there must be some great new bands out there but we're just getting old enough not to be involved intimately with any scene's and therefore are missing the next wave.

I'm downloading it as I type. I will also buy a copy if I like it. The way you describe it makes it sound like Fleet Foxes who I think put out the strongest lp last year. Fleet Foxes have that hippy, David Crosby solo stuff sound but also with English and American folk influences. I am also not a big fan of that neo-folk sound you here in Williamsburg a lot but FF are different. I think it is just their strong voices and excellent songwriting that makes them stand out.
Looking forward to Woods.

saw Jason & The 400 Unit here in Tampa last week with Red Cortez (formerly the Weather Underground) opening. Great, great show.
His DBT chestnut "Never Gonna Change" added a break into Wilco's Spiders (Kidsmoke).
The new album is fantastic - "Coda" is his little tribute to Derek & The Dominoes, i think.
and his guitar player, Browan Lollar, did the album cover:
