I did. Perhaps I did it wrong but all I heard was a bad E-Street Band and some embarrassing lyrics.

No Offense.

Also - are we doing bands we discovered in '09 or bands/albums released in '09?
I was thinking we would do a NEW music for '09 thing.
There's some old news in here right now.

I know. It's awesome.I thought about that during the discussion R&F had about how there won't be any more big selling albums. When I was a kid, I was always trying to find new music. The problem was that there weren't that many outlets for it. My friends weren't into that stuff. I was lucky enough to have WHFS in DC before it went corporate and 120 Minutes on Sunday nights on MTV, but even what you got there was pretty limited. In magazines you could read about bands without really getting a good sense of whether you would like them or not. If I found a band that sounded like it might be good, half the time, the only way to know was to gamble on buying the album.

Now, however, there are blogs and other websites devoted spreading the word about new music. You also have "virtual friends" who can recommend things to you. I've definitely checked a bunch of things out based on the recommendations of people on this site. It's also easy to check out a recommended artist on the internet by going to sites like Amazon, Last.fm, youtube, etc. If you're willing to make the effort, it really is incredibly easy to explore music in this day and age. It just sucks that it comes at the expense of local record stores, album sales, etc.

It's obvious that I'm insane when it comes to music. Ok, and everything else, too. But I kind of live by the sentiment that the greatest album ever is the one I'm going to buy next, so there's always that search. I also still take a lot of chances. Hey, I'm single and make pretty okay money so why not still buy music?

I don't spend a lot of time stopping at sites, though, to find out about stuff. I still use traditional means - in particular, publications such as Magnet, Mojo, Uncut, Q, Big Takeover, etc. etc.

And despite what the record companies believe, torrents actually end up causing me to buy even more music. If I hear about something that sounds interesting, I'll go to what.cd or indietorrents and download it. If I end up liking it, then I always buy it.

I troll through the streaming media here every weekend. I've found lots and lots of new artists here. (http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/mb)

Also going to live shows and getting there in time to see the opening acts is a great way to hear some music you might not have heard before. Often the acts are chosen by the band you are there to see, so they will most likely be something you would be into anyway!

A couple of other methods to find new music:

1. If you have an iPhone/iTouch, there's a new app called IHeartNewMusic that collects 50 or so of the most well-known music blogs. After opening a blog, you can hit the "music" button and all of the site's music files are available to play. If a desired blog isn't one of those chosen, you can enter the address of others and still use the music function.

2. Blip.FM is primarily used to send songs to twitter, but you can use it separately. Enter an artist and/or title in the search, and just click on one of the choices to listen. Or you can find like-minded "DJ's" and listen to their choices. I finally got around to checking out Silversun Pickups last night after one of my "friends" posted one of their tracks. Boombox is an iPhone/itouch app for this site.

It absolutely is, and my taste is way more varied than it ever was. The discussions on whether or not music is stagnant always get tied into the finance and the music industry, as if this is the one art form that money improves. The people that are losing the money are the ones trying to perpetuate the myth that the internet is killing music. And the record industry trying to play the victim after what its been doing to the artist and the consumer for years is about the ballsiest thing anyone has tried to pull in awhile.

It really is a leveling of the playing field.

It really is a leveling of the playing field.

It truly is ... maybe there won't be another Elvis, Pink Floyd, or other cash cow for the industry, but by no means have people stopped making music. Scenes form around local talent, bloggers spread that sound around, people decide to take what is offered for free or offer money.

There are so many labels forming now, too. I have no numbers on what existed before or if there really are more labels now vs. then, but it seems that everywhere I look now a band I like has either started a label for themselves, or joined a label of their peers and are merely recruiting all the players in their scene and trying to get on the road... a level playing field.

For example, I discovered 'Blank Dogs' (forgive my hammering of this band's name but they have set the tone for my 2009) - went to his myspace and found 'Woods', 'The Intelligence', 'Dum Dum Girls', 'Zola Jesus' - all of whom I've bought records from. I now scout Woodsit Records and In The Red for new releases.

The show discussion the other was unnerving - clearly the guys were not as informed as they thought.

I am not sure how new this website is, but www.dizzler.com claims to have over 15 million songs that stream freely. I am not sure how massive their breadth of music is but I'm sure it could keep most people busy for quite some time. Simply type in a band you'd like to hear and then stream away. It reminds me a lot of audiogalaxy back when that was around.

On a somewhat separate note: www.ted.com is also full of little bits of knowledge (their slogan is 'Ideas worth spreading'), definitely worth checking out as well.

Here are 5 albums I'm listening to a lot. Some came out this year, or the end of last year. I'll name the artist, album and maybe a single that you should go to youtube and listen to before you decide to listen to more or dislike it. Get it?

1. The War on Drugs- Wagonwheel Blues. Listen to 'A Needle in your Eye #16'. Reminds me of Arcade Fire or Springsteen musically but the guy sings with a tempo like Dylan.

2. Viva Voce- The Heat can Melt Your Brain OR Rose City. Listen to 'Alive with Pleasure' or 'Red Letter Day'. Husband and wife duo, sound is amazing. My favorite band to listen to lately.

3. Grizzly Bear- Veckatimest. Listen to 'Two Weeks'. Beautiful harmony's, slick production. Album of the year so far, for sure.

4. The Thermals- Now We Can See. Listen to the title track. It's a little punk with a touch of pop, almost like some early Weezer. But their lyrically really strong, the last album was a concept album.

5. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart- Self titled. Listen to 'Everything with You'. It sounds like 80's new wave but really melodic and beautiful.

Also downloaded a Pete & the Pirates album last night. I enjoy it thru one listen.

The Thermals thing is weird because the album leaked and a lot of people talked shit on it, then all of a sudden they seem to be everywhere. That might just be my perception because they're on heavy rotation on Sirius, but its funny how things work out.

DJ Spinbad has been around for a while. I discovered him about 10 years ago when he released an 80's mix. Really great stuff.

This past April he released a 90's mix via his Twitter. It's basically 90's pop, mixed with 90's movie dialog with scratching and mixing to go along with it. Easily my most listened to album this year.

Most recent '09 finds:

Cococoma - All I Give 7"
Dead Ghosts - Bad Vibes 7"
*Fergus & Geronimo - Harder Than It's Ever Been 7"
Woven Bones - With You Alone 7"
Golden Triangle - Golden Triangle Lp
*Blank Dogs - Waiting 7"
*Thee Oh Sees - Tidal Wave 7"

I'm not in love with any one of them entirely. F & G, is by far my favorite single of recent. The new Blank Dogs single is easily Sniper's best work yet. Thee Oh Sees single is great but it doesn't best Help, their album from earlier this year.

Emily Wells covering Juicy.

I heard this on XMU yesterday and really like it, it's on her new EP. The rest of the albums are ok but not really jumping out at me, but it's definately something different if you like portishead, violins, and white girls.

That link was lame

I was seeing Mono earlier this week and they had another great post-rock band I had never heard of opening for them, a band called Maserati. They've apparently been around for a while though.

They are only the second opening band I've ever seen that I've become interested in after seeing them.

Not because of the instrumentation, or vocals so much, mostly because she is covering Juicy. All that did was make me put on Biggie's record. A cover should satisfy you, not leave you wish someone would cut the record off and pop on the original. No fault to her though, just needs to be careful when choosing which songs to cover.

I actually probably like it more than I normally would because of all those shitty, ironic, acoustic covers of Paper Planes that came out. I really believe that the girl loves that song and that goes a long way for me.

I'm no longer participating in irony.

And this isn't new at all, but I just heard their record for the first time and am really enjoying it. Arrah and the Ferns

P.S. Eliot from Alabama. The flash player isn't working for me so I don't know what songs are streaming on myspace, but their first album is defiantely worth checking out. Sounds like Allison Mossheart (The Kills, Dead Weather) when she was a teenager (Discount) singing for Lemuria (Lemuria.)

Revisiting the idea of PS Eliot I have to say that the Crutchfield sisters are going to be huge eventually, or atleast hipster huge. Their band before PS Eliot, The Ackleys, is just as good and blends genres a little bit more. It's a wierd indie/pop/punk with a little fuzz, keyboards and a southern twinge. Unfortunately I think The Ackleys are done. PS Eliot has been through philly a few times (they're playing some house tomorrow, for example) and I cant get out to see them. I'm just really blown away at the density and ease of the lyrics, especially considering how young they are. The Ackleys still have a myspace, and you can hear their album on grooveshark, but I have had no luck buying or downloading it.

We may actually have something to do when the Deal sisters pack it up.
