"California Stars" - ok, I know that's technically a Woody Guthrie song that Wilco added music, but I can hear this song on an endless loop and never get tired of it.

Man, oh man, GAZ. Make a thread that goes right to my heartstrings. This is a tough one so I'll break it down by album.
A.M.- I'll go with Casino Queen. Not a huge fan of the album overall because they were still finding their sound as Wilco.
Being There- This is tough one. Disc one has Monday which I love. Disc two has Sunken Treasure. But I'll go with Forget the Flowers. It's pretty much their last country song and its just short but beautiful and catchy.
Summerteeth- How to fight loneliness and ELT might be their best written songs. But I'd probably go with I'm always in love. It's the best song on the album and musically really showed how their sound had changed since A.M.
YHF- This is murderers row here. An album of brilliance. I'll go with Jesus Etc. (even though my fav is Pot Kettle Black) because its the song that most people who don't know Wilco fall in love with immediately. It's such a gorgeous, easy melody and one of the songs on the album that kinda took on a different meaning after 9/11.
A Ghost is Born- Theologians is the easy choice for me on this album. The lyrics and the guitar riff is classic Wilco.
Sky Blue Sky- I've listened to Impossible Germany probably 1,000 times. The guitar is just absurdly good.
Now having said all that, I think if there was one song I would want someone to hear of theirs, it would be California Stars off Mermaid Avenue Vol. 1. I don't know if its disqualified because they didn't write the lyrics but it'd be my pick.

I know some of you who posted here have from the responses but if you like Wilco, you HAVE to watch "Sunken Treasure: Live from the Pacific Northwest" the Jeff Tweedy acoustic doc. Its fantastic. It comes with an audio copy of all the songs so I've listened to it on a loop for the past year or so. Some of the songs he plays are better than the bands version. Here's a couple.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gnwX7YzJPzw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gnwX7YzJPzw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Seriously, how do you really just pick one? I've literally travelled thousands of miles, in total, just to see this band live. You don't do things like that for a band that has only a few great songs.
Gun to my head, I'd have to pick Theologians, mostly for the lyrical content and my personal attatchment to it. This is subject to change by the time I hit "Submit Reply".

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/05/wilco-jeff-tweedy-jay-bennett-lawsuit-cook-county-yankee-hotel-foxtrot.html
Former Wilco member Jay Bennett sued lead singer Jeff Tweedy in Cook
County Circuit Court today, claiming Tweedy owes him money from the
band's 2002 documentary and royalties on songs written during
Bennett's seven years with the group.
Bennett was part of the Chicago-based band from 1994 to 2001, the
breach-of-contract suit states, and worked as a sound engineer and
performed instruments on the albums "Being There," "Summerteeth,"
"Mermaid Avenue," "Mermaid Avenue Vol. II" and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."
The suit argues that "as a recording musician in Wilco, Bennett is
entitled to compensation for his services rendered in the form of
continuing and perpetual artist royalty payments from" Tweedy.
It concedes that Bennett was paid during his years in the group, but
only in "infrequent partial payments" equivalent to 15 percent of the
band's income from sales and performances.
Bennett claims Tweedy did not compensate him for his appearance in "I
Am Trying to Break Your Heart," which documented the creative process
behind "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" in 2000 and captured a scene of Tweedy
and Bennett bickering over the mixing of "Heavy Metal Drummer."
The suit argues that Bennett was never paid for his role and that
Tweedy "never obtained the necessary releases for the use of Bennett's
performance in the film."
It was unclear if Tweedy was a producer on the project, as the suit claims.
Bennett left Wilco in August 2001.
"It was time for Jay to move on and have a bigger role in making his
own music," Tweedy said at the time. "Jay has been a huge part of the
last three records, but it just became more obvious to us that he
didn't have the same enthusiasm for being a part of the band. It took
a lot of bravery on both parts to make this happen, and we moved past
any hard feelings really fast."
The lawsuit asks for damages of at least $50,000.

Given that he played on and was major part of my three favorite Wilco albums and that the albums since have been missing a little something to me, yes, I definitely hoped of the outside chance they'd clear the air and he'd guest with them down the line.
Plus I don't think it's fair to blame him for all the major band conflict since a lot of it was going on when Tweedy was still a pill-popping, boozing asshole.

yea, and Jay was completely sober.
I wasn't blaming Jay for anything. It was clear that it was a two way street there...But it was obvious that they didn't get along. And when bandmates don't get along(unless you are the Rolling Stones) then things have to change.
And that stuff with Jay is some of my favorite as well.

The 50K is not what he is asking for..it is just the minimum of damages he is asking for to allow a certain court have jurisdiction
anyway....Forget Jay Bennett...Nels Cline is incredible...new DVD is great also...his playing on Impossible Germany an Handshake Drugs is amazing. Anyone that has seen them live can appreciate what Nels brings to the group

Great music but probably the MOST dull band live.

Look how many great bands have fed off of a competitive or confrontational relationship within the band to make amazing music. I think that kind of rivalry challenges the main creative forces to constantly do better. I still love Wilco's music, but to me it just sounds so much more safe and predictable and too downright mellow since Jay left and Jeff took total control. I don't "hear" the same emotions behind the musc that I did on those three albums.
