View Full Version : Does Jurassic Park still hold up today?

As discussed on today's show.
Jurassic Park is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I absolutely think it still holds up. Even the dialogue is good. I'm not saying legendary, but it's good. Bunch of good one liners ("Clever girl"), classic moments, and just fantastic overall.
So do you agree with Ron that it doesn't hold up if you were to watch it today?

The effects are still top notch. The transition from animatronics to cg is almost flawless.
The kids are the worst part of the movie. hands down. they suck.

I think it holds up. The dinosaurs would look no better today if they remade it. Those effects were beautiful and would still work.

I say yes. The premise of the movie remains unchanged. It is simply sci-fi. Even if it looks like shit, it is still simply that, a sci-fi movie. Star Wars doesn't look good now either but people like it just as well.

Totally holds up... toiletcrusher's right... even badly filmed sci-fi still stretches the limits of your imagination. The effects are just visual aids and I think they do more than a great job in conveying the amazing concept.

I love that part when Jeff Goldblum kicks that old lady, calls her a "rich cunt", and then writes an "X" on a napkin and throws it at her. Timeless. Then a lizard spits on Newman.

I honestly think that CGI somehow looks better on the big screen and doesn't transfer well to tv. I noticed the same thing when I saw Jurassic Park on tv and thought the same thing Ronnie thought: that the effects weren't as good as I remembered in the theater.
However, I was recently watching the new Indiana Jones on tv - a much newer film with much more recent CGI than Jurassic Park. Now, I just saw it in theaters a couple of months ago and to me the CGI didn't look as realistic on tv as I remembered it in the theater - and I have an HD tv too.

It holds up like "Predator" holds up; a fun as hell sci-fi flick that you'll watch every time you catch it while flicking around.
As a "good" movie?
Absolutely not.

Doesn't a movie that succeeds exceptionally well at being what it tries to be (a fun as hell sci-fi flick, apparently) have a pretty good argument for being a good movie?
Obviously, if a movie tris to be a piece of shit, it's a piece of shit, but how is JP a bad movie?

The dinosaurs aren't effective because of the cgi, but because of Spielberg's staging. He shoots it more like a haunted house movie than like a giant-monster movie.
The scene where the T-Rex attacks the cars is a blast to watch just because the suspense builds so methodically. It's as much fun to wait for the T-Rex to show up as it is to see the T-Rex.

Oddly, i have the opposite opinion here. I resisted everything about Jurassic Park and refused to read this book that every single person in the universe was carting around for months. I eventually broke down and became a huge fan of MC and read all his books.
When the movie came out, with all the type, i was so excited and traveled way out to some faraway theater that had the latest technology so that all the great effects would really pop. Holy shit was I disappointed. I didnt think anything looked real, and I thought the movie was mediocre at best. The only think i liked was the beautiful scenery of the Island.
But somehow, over all the years of seeing JP on tv, it grew on me, and now i absolutely love it, and I honestly cant even judge at this point what i think of the CGI cuz its like an old friend.
I have this weird thing where if i see a shitty movie enough times, I grow to enjoy it. The Phantom of the Opera movie is another perfect example, and so is the movie Titanic. Both movies I remember thinking were shockingly unbelievable pieces of garbage when I saw them, and yet I can watch both over and over and actually have some warm soft spot in my heart for them now.

I can not stand Jeff Goldblum. My apologies to the ladies who find him dreamy. Between the Jurassic Park movies and Independence Day its like Hollywood was trying to make him an action star or something. I just hate his delivery. As far as JP holding up, I guess it does. It was a subpar movie then and its a subpar movie now.

The CGI is the only thing that holds up. Its not the overdone shaky-cam mess that most big budget action movies are today. Its probably just because the movie is so bad in comparison to the book, mainly turning John Hammond into Santa Claus, that I can barely sit through it anymore. I loved the movie as a kid, but completely flipped on it after reading the book in high school.

The first JP still holds up. I even think the dinosaurs still look better then they do now. The T-Rex in the new King Kong look worse then JP. Heck the first time you see the T-Rex going after the kids in the jeep still makes me freak. The raptors still do it for me. The scene when the people escape up the ladder and get into the ceiling. Ok a raptor opening a handle on a door is sort..no is stupid. But I still enjoy it.
Now for JP2..wow that might be the worst movie ever..ever made. So fuckin bad.

I think the raptor should have pretended to be a housekeeper, offered to jack somebody off in an ethnically stereotypical accent, and then died of an overdose in a Chicago hotel room.

I love(d) it.
It's a great, well-made -albeit STUDIO- movie. The plot was unique.... and it was executed extremely well. (They didn't show everything right away. )
A truly excellent film score. And it was well acted.
Like every other hit film that gets discussed here (and on the air!) .... Jurassic Park is getting the usual frosty ultra-hop backlash now.

I think the CGI and visual effect dinosaurs hold up today - and could be better than anything what passed for a CGI creature today. Just look at any movie in the past 10 years which had any kind of monster, or even dinosaur.
Put that up against when we first see the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, and JP will win every time.
It was Spielberg’s use of animatronics and CGI that made it work. Nowadays, they're all cartoon-like rather than realistic.
I'd say the only scene that could benefit would be the first dinosaur reveal - the Brontosaurus, which could use a reality-touch up in CGI.
Yea, it holds up. I don't know if a 3-D makeover will help, because I haven't seen a move that was converted to 3D which was anywhere close to a 3D filmed movie. It's a waste of time and money.

I attended a screening of Jurassic Park in 3D last night.
It was a lot of fun to see it in IMAX.
I am not at all a fan of 3D, but I went anyway. It had it's moments. Some of the stuff plays really well in 3D but mostly... it's distracting and not necessary. Things in the foreground are extremely blurry sometimes, and basically just they just appear to be "in the way". (things like branches and vines especially)
It's funny... the stuff that makes the movie appear dated is NOT the dinosaur effects but rather... the "high tech" jargon and computers within the movie.
"IT'S AN INTERACTIVE CD-ROM!!!" etc etc.
Having said all that, I still maintain that it's as airtight and complete as blockbuster screenplay can be. Every single plot device is addressed. Characters motivations.... the animals motivations.... etc. It's all there. Even more than I remembered.
There is one scene in particular that happens to make NO SENSE at all.
When Wayne Knight's character tries to make it off the island, his jeep gets stuck in the mud. He then attempts to tie his vehicle to a tree using the cable/winch that's attached to his front bumper. This is retarded. If he "succeeded", all that would've happened is his jeep would've been pulled right down that waterfall on that steep hill. What the fuck was he (his character? Spielberg??) thinking????
Other than that, the movie itself holds up quite nicely.
The story and the effects = A
3D = C+
