View Full Version : Brown eggs and White eggs

What's the deal? Any reason why some dozens of eggs are brown and some are white? Is it the brown chickens? They taste the same as far as I can tell.
White eggs are so afraid of brown eggs.

The explanation I was always given from my mom was that the brown eggs were "special".
Like I know what the fuck that's supposed to mean. Special how? Are they magical? They taste the same, goddamnit! Except the cost more. What's the deal?!

It's simply a matter of inherited characteristics from the parents, i.e. genetics.
Hens with white feathers and white earlobes lay white eggs. Hens with red feathers and red earlobes lay brown eggs.
There is no nutritional, cholesterol or caloric difference between brown and white eggs. Both types contain about 75 calories, about six grams of protein, and five grams of fat. An egg contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol (all in the yolk).
Chicken eggs may even be blue or speckled! They share the same characteristics of all chicken eggs except as to color.

LOL - Peterina, I knew someone would ask about that. Offhand, I forgot the anatomical term for them, but earlobes sounds better than "the thingy that hangs down from their auditory apparatus"

Wow this thread is a true meeting of the minds!
Whoever won't eat brown eggs cuz they ar brown needs a slap in the face...
Brown eggs come from Free Range Chickens...They are allowed to walk around and not held in tiny cages. That is the way it was explained to me...
I eat brown eggs simply because of the fact that I feel better eating an egg that comes from a hen that was allowed to walk around...and was not held in a cage.

Wait I just consulted with my mother on this topic...and she says that the color of the egg only has to do with the food that they are fed...Nothing else...But often times, the brown eggs are free range..So check the packaging...it will say on the carton.

Jersey Rich - Egg color is not affected by the chicken kept in a "free range" environment (I put that in quotes, b/c free range is just a larger cage.)
It's good old genetics that's responsible.

Brown eggs are the color of most chicken eggs, Not the bleached variety u get in the store. Brown egss have a different taste, and its hard to describe, but I like them. I like both really.

Uhh, white eggs are white
because they're white, not
because they're bleached.
And brown eggs and white
eggs do not taste different.
The taste is going to
depend a lot more upon the
type of feed that the
chickens received. And that
has nothing to do with the
shell colour.

According to the American Egg Board Web Site (http://www.aeb.org/), here are the facts...
COLOR
Egg shell and yolk color may vary, but color has nothing to do with egg quality, flavor, nutritive value, cooking characteristics or shell thickness.
Shell:
The color comes from pigments in the outer layer of the shell and may range in various breeds from white to deep brown. The breed of hen determines the color of the shell. Breeds with white feathers and ear lobes lay white eggs; breeds with red feathers and ear lobes lay brown eggs. White eggs are most in demand among American buyers. In some parts of the country, however, particularly in New England, brown shells are preferred. The Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire and Plymouth Rock are breeds that lay brown eggs. Since brown-egg layers are slightly larger birds and require more food, brown eggs are usually more expensive than white.

It's total racial profiling if ya ask me. I mean do you think you're going to shake your booty more if you eat brown eggs?
I used to think when I was little that the brown eggs meant the chicken got poopies on the egg. :)
