I bought my 6 year old a little 25lb heavy bag and some gloves for Christmas, and he loves hitting the bag. Since I am a big MMA fan that has been trying to lose weight and improve my overall health I figured adding some boxing to my cycling/walking/jogging routine would help. Anyone have any thoughts about what I should get? I have no desire to become any type of fighter(35 is a little late to start THAT kind of thing) but am looking for the best bang for my buck.

Anyone out there ever use either one?

its actually good to have both. A speed bag will improve hand eye and cardio, stamina and the heavy bag will make him stronger

The speed bag is great for timing and hand eye coordination, but for a total workout nothing in the world beats the heavy bag. You'll get a phenomenal cardio workout and develop strength and speed as well.

Back when I was sparring I used to rotate rounds; one on the heavy bag, one on the speed. Three minute rounds with a minute rest in between, just like a boxing match.

You won't believe how exhausting it is bobbing, weaving, and punching the heavy bag with all your might. You'll get in the best shape of your life and understand that fighters are the most conditioned athletes in the world.

Nothing else can make 3 minutes seem like an eternity.

I haven't, but I've heard that a heavy bag will give you the most bang for your buck.

If I had a basement, I'd consider installing one there so I could come home and whale on it after a shitty day.

they have this universal type machine with a 75 pound heavy bag, a speed bag, pull up bar, bench press thing, squat thing and one of those agility ropes with the adjustable medicine ball, and the entire thing was like 4 or 500 bucks. Modell's i think, it was pretty nasty but I dont have space for it

I second Gvac's thoughts. Get both.

Heavy bag is your workout.

Jabs and crosses - if you're not used to them, will wear you out almost immediately. You can also throw in whatever else you want: knees, forward elbows, kicks, backfists, spinning backfists - careful of super-hyperextending your elbows... headbutts, stiff finger kung fu pokes, Three Stooges eye gouges, taunts and threats. I was just recommending it to a friend recently. It's highly recommended as a piece of equipment that helps with the monotony of working out.

I was watching a self defense vid recently that covered getting jumped in an elevator - flurries of in close punches - as many as possible just go go go... heavy bag is really good for a lot of stuff.

Be careful where you put it though. If you're going in the basement, and if it will fit, you might want to consider a stand that'll keep it off the cross beams overhead. I've knocked stuff off tables on the first floor of my house to the point where i just took it down until I get a stand.

Speed bag is about timing and focus - it's about training your fists up and being relaxed in that position. It's fun and challenging to keep your rythym but you're not going to sweat.
