I've been catching Hee Haw off and on for a month or so. Its so bad I can't turn it off once I start watching. And damn I didn't realize Merle Haggard had nothing better to do back then.

::2 dopes pop out of the corn field::
"Hey Farmer Dave, why do you think they called the show Hee Haw?"
"Oh I dont know PanterA, why do they call the show Hee Haw?"
"Because it's against FCC regulations to call it Hayseed Horseshit! Hey look, Johnny Cash!!"
::The 2 dopes slowly lower back into the corn field.::

Hee Haw was one of those shows on TV when I was a kid that I just didn't get. I liked it, but I didn't understand why it was on TV.
Now I would watch it for hours straight if I could.
Unfortunately I live in civilization, where we've moved on.

My Grandma loved that show. In college a hayseed friend of mine used to recite the "What's for Dinner Grandpa?" bit.
What's for dinner, Grandpa?
Possum, boiling in a pot.
Homemade biscuits, pipin' hot....

Hee Haw - oh yeah! When i was a kid i would get my face slapped if I talked and acted up while Hee Haw was on. About a year ago I was hammered around 4am and Hee Haw informercials came on selling the DVD's. I got caught up in the moment and ordered the whole damn collection - around $400. I have only watched 2 of them but my favorite is Junior Samples - so terribly bad - so funny.
BTW... back in the day Hee Haw was the pinnacle of the country music scene. If you were anybody you played Hee Haw and possible more than once if you were a superstar!
I was always a fan of Big Shirtless Rod.
And The Recovering Alcoholic Jug Band?

Don't forget the Buckaroos - they never got any credit. Buck had that red white and blue acoustic gutar that overshadowed the rest of the Buckaroos' gleeming white belts and white patent leather shoes.

How much did Hee Haw have to do with southerners being stereotyped as retarded hayseeds and country music being labeled as shit? It's a shame. I remember becoming an adult and realizing that Roy Clark was a really talented musician and not just the host of that shitty D level Carol Burnett show for southerners.

I prefer Horse Apples but I do like Roy Clark's music and think Hee Haw could have done a better job showing off what good musicians it had on the show.

Well, as bad as it hurt Roy Clark's reputation, it really totally fucked up Buck Owens. His stuff is utterly brilliant, probably the most direct ancestor to "alt-country" today. But everyone just knows him as a douche who did jokes for hayseeds.
Wait there is an "RFDTV" Channel? Wow, we really do have a channel for literally everything!

I have a lot of family in the south and most of them dug the show big time. Many watched for the great music acts, some for the cornball but safe humor and others for the Honeys. Hee Haw was similar in many ways to an Opry show, and back when the show began America wasn't overly sensitive about stereotypes as it is now.

Buck knew what it was, but he said it gave him a chance to do a job where he lived at home instead of spending all his time in a lonely motel room. I agree, his stuff is brilliant. Buck quit the show before it ended and he spent his last years playing his own club in
Bakersfield. He just didn't like the road.

I am from the South and am embarrassed I have to explain it, but here goes.
The stereotypes existed long before then and far from perpetuating a stereotype, by taking it over the top with classic bits like "The Culhanes," what they were doing was showing they could have fun with it and weren't much bothered by what others think.
Compared to other variety shows of the time, it had pretty high ratings and was better than you want to admit.
There were times when Roy Clark played his ass off, as did other guests like Flatt and Scruggs.
Being from the South made it funnier, I think, and I don't recall anyone taking offense...

I don't tivo it but I keep watching the damn show. Those Hager brothers give me the creeps.
I've been DVRing Hee-Haw twice a week for the last 6 months. The cornball comedy and the classic country music are great.
My favorites where Jimmy Riddle & Jackie Phelps...
