I'm on a huge Kinks obsession right now, primarily because of this:

Because they've been on so many different labels, there has never been a truly comprehensive compilation. This box collects all of their highlights on six discs.

I love the Kinks. If you're a bit more budget minded, or don't know enough of the Kinks to be ready for a plunge into a full box set, I suggest this collection (http://www.amazon.com/Kinks-Ultimate-Collection/dp/B00005V4WI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1231710601&sr=8-1):

Next to the box set, this is probably their most comprehensive collection It's tough to distill a band with such a large discography on to 2 discs, but they do a decent job with this one, collecting 44 tracks over the life of the band.

That is a pretty good one, but it also misses a couple of eras.
The remastering on the box is an added bonus, as the RCA stuff (early 70's) has always sounded horrible.

I worked front stage pit security for a Kinks gig at my college. I was 5 ft away from Ray Davies and paid no attention to security issues. He was also stinking drunk. It was a great show.
I have me some shopping to do.

Yes, mostly the shitty eras when the Kinks were embarassingly bad.
The box set would be awesome, but like Mikey said, for those who know nothing about the band or are presseds for cash, that smaller collection is one of the best best-ofs for any band.

Totally. I'll take the 60's-era Kinks and the Animals over the Who or the Stones any day.

The Kinks are so fucking awesome. I doubt I will buy the box set because Im poor but I have most of the albums anyway. The period between 68-71 is an incredible run of studio albums. If you have these, you're pretty much all set.
Village Green Preservation Society 1968
Arthur 1969
Lola Versus the Powerman 1970
Muswell Hillbillies 1971
Cool links of the Kinks performances on SNL thru the years

I do, but I like the 60's-era Kinks much more.

Mid-60's, yes.
Once the Stones hit their stride in '68 with "Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed" in '69 they kind of left the Kinks in the dust.

Personally, I enjoy it, but like Zep they always blurred the line between "homage" and "ripping off" in terms of how indebted they were to black American music. That, and I thought the Kinks had much snappier lyrics.
