I was checking youtube for a copy of Shuffle it All and I found bassist from Buck cherry warming up with the bass line.

So nice.

What's a song with your favorite bass line - or one you really dig that you can think of?

I'm posting this thread b/c the How to Play Bass thread leaves me inspired to (someday soon) pick up my bass and start trying to get thick and mellow someday.

Rancid's Maxwell Murder. There's a live version where Matt Freeman absolutely blows my mind with what he's able to do with a bass. He's the ebst bass player out there right now.

Rancid's Maxwell Murder. There's a live version where Matt Freeman absolutely blows my mind with what he's able to do with a bass. He's the ebst bass player out there right now.

i think he changes it up a bit every time he plays it. that was my first pick originally because of the power and speed that he spits out notes but i like the flow of the opening to 'journey to the end of east bay' so much that i switched

How the hell could you? It's Rock and Roll at it's most stripped down and most effective. If aliens came and wanted an example of rock n' roll...I would give them that song. The build...to the chorus...to the top baby! Wow. Such an awesome song.

but I also really like any time there is a bass flourish in any Pixies song, because it sounds like Kim trying to speak up over Black Francis, especially in U Mass.

And there is a myriad of great post hardcore and emo bands up through the 90s with really melodic basslines.

Im old I use to tie in a solo from wheel of fortune(Doobie Brothers) with the bass line from whipping post...Flea has a great feel for bass.... I can not post you tube vids but the one where he shows you the slow moves then shows in real time is pretty cool for me...Juggy

That brings me waaaay back. Wow.

It should be mentioned though... yes the bassline is cool but, it isn't a bass guitar. That sound is a preset on just about every sampling-keyboard from that era (and today).

Thanks Rich - this is really fun b/c I don't think most people listen to bass lines (I never did) and now that I'm looking for them - I'm going back over a bunch of old favorites and finding really interesting stuff.

Like the Van song is really steady and almost like a natural undulation - like the ocean.

The Dead song seems to be one of those slightly showy melodic lines that goes high to low and back when you don't expect it to. It seems to fill the spots in the song where there are a few open spots too.

What do you think of slap bass? I know it's maybe a little like doing tricks but I like when a bassist is poppin off some sound every once in awhile and I don't notice too much of it represented here.. can't think of anything other than some chili peppers off the top of my head. I could search youtube, but I figure someone's got some opinion.

That song has a real nice bass line to it. And Flea changes it up to keep it interesting---there are a lot of different parts to it.
