From the "My Wife Disgusted Me" thread:
1) I have seen you order and eat FRIED FUCKING PICKLES at Brother Jimmy's, that is exponentially more offensive than a lil dabble in some gravy.
Now, I love me some fried pickles. I've eaten them at four different restaurants, two of which are now out of business:
Insano in Asbury Park - This is where it started. I was doing a gig in Asbury and the chef walked out with a plate of fried pickles. I initially turned up my nose at first, but then when I had one, the whole world changed.
I love southern food - and this was something unique and delicious.
Sadly, Insano went out of business. Who knew having a non-chain restaurant in Asbury Park was a bad idea?
Big Ed's BBQ and Brother Jimmy's BBQ - We tried the fried pickles from each of these places, and instead of using a kosher dill spear, they used bread and butter chips.
In a word: Disgusting. Big Ed's is now out of business. Brother Jimmy's, however, has many other positives besides the awful fried pickles.
Then, just last week, we went to Thee Pitts Again, a BBQ place in Glendale, AZ that Guy Fieri went to on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
The BBQ was incredible, but we noticed they had fried pickles on the menu. Gwen's admonishment of my fried pickle habit came to mind, and we ordered.
Just awesome. Not as great as Insano's, but on it's own level of tastiness. It used some sort of tempura batter on spears cut in half, so they looked like pieces of sweet and sour chicken.
Flavorful, and not greasy at all.
So are fried pickles disgusting?

They are fantastic. No doubt about it.
Only time I ever had them were down in Memphis. Forget where, but it was awesome.

the people and the atmosphere.
the food is fine, but the meatheads and the fake tan people make it unbearable.

???
Maybe we've gone there at different times, or the clientele has RADICALLY changed since we were last there about a year ago, but I've never had an issue with the people there, and the folks you describe make my skin crawl.
Then again, I realized the last time I was there was nearly three years ago. Missy's birthday.
We just had a really chill time, hanging out in the back, watching tv and talking.
Maybe it's different in back?
Or maybe you were arguing about your chick scraping her teeth.

I've been to the upper east side one multiple times, it is an early 20s hang.
brother jimmy's is the peach pit after dark.

I had them once, but it was at a BBQ restaurant that was really awful and I didn't really enjoy them. The Ribs were very dry and flavorless. I would try them again in a different restaurant, though, where they could potentially be better.

There's two on the Upper East Side - the "Original" on 77th and 2nd, and the "Bait Shack" on 92nd and 3rd. Which one are you talking about?

That's the other place we've had them ... they're mediocre at Hooters.
And Brother Jimmy's doesn't use bread-and-butter pickles. They use dill pickles.
Anyone who deep-fries cornichons needs their heads examined. Ew.

The one in the 70's is frat boys galore w/ a dance floor, i think. Bait shack (where we used to go) is more of a restaurant with a tiny bar in the front.

Somebody posted the Good Eats recipe in the "Fried Pickels" thread that RAAMONE started.

Nothing wrong with that!!!
And I am the opposite - I prefer the deep-fried spears to the deep-fried chips.

yeah they have the "deep fried spears" at Brazenhead bar and they have little fried gurkins at "the pub". but the pickle chips rein supreme. especially with some zesty horseradish sauce

Ug, I so do not get this "let's fry everything" trend. I love pickles but the idea of one fried makes my skin crawl. Then again I eat next to no fried foods.

I don't think the deep-friend pickle is part of any "trend" ... unlike the deep-fried Twinkie, which almost certainly is a trendy item. (I have eaten a deep-fried Twinkie. Although I enjoyed it, I can truthfully say I won't need to even think about eating another one for a couple of years.)
Seriously, don't knock the fried pickle 'til you've tried it. And a good one is hard to find. (Personally, I feel the vinegar and dill of a sour pickle offset the batter/coating in precisely the right manner, while something like a bread-and-butter pickle or cornichon-type of gherkin is too much because the sweetness doesn't do much to offset the batter, but rather it makes the fried element too cloying and quite disgusting.)
If it's done right, deep-fried food can be pretty darn good eats.

I used to love Insano's..their pickles were great..Never saw another place that had them.
I am not positive, but I think the chef from there took over Captain Jack's in Ocean Grove.

That would be awesome.
His method was great. Not too much batter, more of a coating and fried spears, not chips.
I also liked the fried olives, but Matty's not an olives person, so he didn't try 'em. Mmmmmm......fried olives.....

Did I not say earlier in the thread that fried bread-and-butter pickles are disgusting?
(Or do you just not know what bread-and-butter pickles are? If not, that's OK. I don't know if it's a universally recognized term for sweet pickles. They're among the foulest foods on the planet, next to liver and lobster.)

Thanks to this thread, I'm now starting to crave fried pickles, despite never had them.
I used to live in Dillsburg, PA, which prided itself on all forms of pickle cuisine (get it, DILLsburg?!! Yeah, it's hacky, but it's all they've got), but I thought the fried variety couldn't be anything but disgusting.

And don't EVER knock the fried pickle 'til you've tried it. (Except for fried bread-and-butter pickles. Those are disgusting.)
