Songs will now cost 69 cents, 99 cents or $1.29. Every song will be DRM free by the end of the quarter. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28524749/)

Apple is cutting the price of some songs in its market-leading iTunes online music store to 69 cents and plans to begin selling all tracks without copy protection.

At the Macworld Expo trade show Tuesday, Apple's top marketing executive, Phil Schiller, said iTunes songs would come in three pricing tiers: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, depending on the recording company they come from.

Until now, pricing has been 99 cents per song. The new pricing begins in April, and "with many more songs priced at 69 cents than $1.29,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a press release. Jobs was not at yesterday's event, as had been expected.

I whole heartedly approve.

Wonder if it'll affect album pricing equally.

And not sure how a pricing change on owning music, a tiered pricing service that apple was fighting for years, has anything to do with a streaming media service.......

just that the alternatives to 'pay to own' are improving

Is it only music or is it also their videos? I can play MP4's on my PSP, but the ones I had bought in the past from them don't work and come up corrupted.

On a related note, I noticed today that Amazon has a lot of current albums available for download for $5.

Doesn't make a difference if you live in New York State. Soon, there will be a hefty tax on music and other media downloads.

Amazon also has a daily twitter special where everyday a different album download is cut to close to nothing.

Burn them onto CD's and re-import them.

Amazon MP3 FTW. I don't support Itunes, the only reason they're going drm free is because they have to.

burning and reimporting takes too long. i just figured it out though. it will let me upgrade my entire collection for 30 cents a song. which for me comes to about 150 bucks.

it also doubles your audio quality. i think i might do it.

I bet Apple wouldn't be doing this if Steve Jobs was healthy.

Yeah, a 128K file burned to CD and then re-ripped to 128K MP3 is just going to sound like total ass. The upgrade feature is by far the way to go.

I noticed that iTunes included a couple of CD's in my list that I did not obtain by official channels, shall we say.

By the way, Pandora was mentioned in this thread, and Pandora 2.0 came out today. And it totally kicks fucking ass. Some changes: flipping your iPhone/iPod Touch into landscape mode brings up that album cascade view you see in iPod mode, allowing you to scroll back and forth through the songs that have been played. The info screen doesn't just tell you why the song was picked anymore, but also includes a bio of the artist. Plus, there's a progress bar now, and you can create stations based on genre, not just artist or song now. Fucking awesome.

Spotify is a streaming service, so it's not a direct competitor. It's more of a reaction to Amazon.com picking up a decent market share.
